History and Culture ##
This ancient shrine is said to have a history of over 1,900 years.
It is considered a focal point for the worship of Tamatare-no-Mikoto, who is said to have achieved great merit in the Empress Jingū's military campaign to the Korean Peninsula.
In 673, a temple was erected beside Tamataregu, later becoming Daizenji Temple, flourishing during the medieval period as the center of the Mizuma Manor. Subsequently, due to the Meiji government's policy of separating Shinto and Buddhism, Daizenji Temple was abolished. However, historical records were preserved, and traditional events such as 'Oniyo' have endured.
Introduction to the Grounds ##
*A cedar tree,believed to be over 1,000 years old,is said to be the spot where Empress Jingū moored her ship on her return from the Korean Peninsula.
- It is believed to bring blessings for safe navigation and transportation.
* Deity of Matchmaking, "Sano-no-Kami":
- People visit seeking blessings for fertility,safe childbirth,and considering Sano-no-Kami as a
deity that attracts happiness.Visitors also come to pray for success in exams and prosperity in business.
Traditional Event - Oniyo ##
The annual event "Oniyo" held on January 7th boasts a history of approximately 1,600 years and has been designated as an Important Intangible Cultural Property of the nation.
Within the precincts, the festival is distinguished by six colossal torches, each approximately one meter in diameter,
13 meters in length, and weighing around 1.2 tons, known as the "largest in Japan." These torches blaze up,enveloping the surroundings in a sacred atmosphere.
Oniyo has been a significant ritual since ancient times, dedicated to warding off disasters and praying for good health. Participants unite their hearts, collectively yearning for peace and the cessation of calamities.
