Daigo Zakura is a giant cherry tree in the northwestern part of Okayama Prefecture.The tree is said to be over 1,000 years old.The circumference of the base is 9.2 meters, the branching is 20 meters from east to west, north to south, and 18 meters high.The species is Azumahigan (a kind of higan cherry).
The Daigo cherry tree has been selected as one of the 100 best trees in Japan.The name comes from a legend that Emperor Go-Daigo admired this cherry tree when he was exiled to Oki Island in 1332.
The sight of only one cherry tree standing tall in a tranquil mountain village.It has an overwhelming power that makes visitors marvel.It is a cherry tree that makes you want to look at it forever.
The Iwai-une-no-Ozakura (giant cherry tree) is an 800-year-old giant cherry tree located near Daigo Cherry Tree, and its variety is "Azuma Higan" (Azuma Higan). With a trunk circumference of 6.5 meters and branches reaching 23 meters, it bears lovely light red flowers and can be enjoyed for a relatively long period of time. It is said that fallen warriors of the Heike clan brought seedlings from Kyoto and planted them.
The flowers are usually at their best from early to mid-April, and during the blooming period, they are illuminated from sunset to around 10:00 p.m. It is designated as a natural monument by Maniwa City.
