When I was a kid we had a 1962 C60 with that straight 6 engine and the 2 speed rear axle. My job was to haul combined wheat to town. We overloaded it significantly and I had to use all the gears to get it moving. Thankfully there were only some very small hills to get over. Good memories.

Those sound like good memories to me. I have to agree that it takes every bit of gear the truck has to get moving with a load. I haven’t come close to overloading it so I could not imagine what a dog it will be when it is.

My daily driver from 1973 for the next 18 years was the 19 53/4 ton Chevrolet with a four-speed, we’re low gear was a granny gear. The only thing that ever went wrong with it after I put a new short block 216 six that it originally came with Liz one coil going bad. Took no time to diagnose it at all and put in a new coil and all is well. No problem starting in the winter time even down into the high teens or low 20s it just cranked very slowly. As long as I kept it tuned up it would start almost before it turned over. Cruising speed was 48 to 50 mph. Loved that truck.

The original drivetrain is what gives classic cars their character. A vehicle starts to feel modern real quick when upgrading engines or to fuel injection. I'm also a fan of older transmissions but I totally understand the desire for more speeds than an old 3 speed. I have a 62 Austin Healey Sprite, factory engine, never been overhauled. Still has points ignition and positive ground electronics, dual carbs and non hardened valve seats. It has a ton of character, which makes it exciting to drive.

@Hillbilly Hooligan you might consider swapping that 235 out for a 292, it’ll go right in and bolt right up in the same spot that 235’s sitting in. Another thing that’s a fairly easy and really cheap upgrade is swapping over to TBI from an 88-94 GM pickup. We did it in an old C-60 with a 292 in it and it made a huge difference in drivability, no more hard cold starts or issues running on hot days, the external coil HEI distributor with modern electronic timing control really helped with mid range power and fuel mileage, it went from getting 6 mpg mixed city and highway to 7.5-8mog….enough to show a solid reduction in fuel costs. The way we went about it was ordering a knock off quadrajet intake from summit then adding a cheap TBI adapter to that. The actual throttle body came off a 350 and we put an in-line pump rated to 15 PSI on the frame rail as close to the tank as possible and ran a return line to an extra 3/8 NPT bung on the tank that was already there just plugged off. For the O2 sensor we had a local muffler shop make a new down pipe with an O2 bung welded about 3” down from the bell flange. Mounted the map sensor on the firewall with rubber hose running to a barb on the intake in one of the extra ports, threaded a coolant temp sensor into one of the plugs on the head and put the knock sensor in another plugged Spot in the head because there wasn’t an obvious spot for it on the block. As far as I recall that was all it took except several hours of reading wiring diagrams and eliminating un-needed circuits. It really wasn’t bad at all
@hillbillyhooligan

I wouldn’t mind dropping a gen 6 454 with the full hydraulic roller internals. I would definitely want to run a carb with that setup. I’m just trying to get away from computers all together! Maybe would consider adding a holly sniper efi to sub for the carb but the 292 is not a bad option either. Thanks for sharing! I’ll be considering both options!

Gear ratios determine fuel mileage. The higher the gear ratio the slower the engine runs and fuel mileage goes up. These trucks were designed to carry loads about twice their empty weight. They need to maximize torque and that takes fuel.

Nice video on that N V 4500 does it have the 6.34 to one first gear ? Have you thought about putting a hydrogen generator on it from water there's a lot of videos on KZbin about it Did it previously have an sm-420 with a 7.05 to one first gear ?
@hillbillyhooligan
@hillbillyhooligan Жыл бұрын
That’s funny you ask. I had originally bought the 6.34 first gear one (20T) to do the swap because I wanted it to act as close to the original sm420 that came out of it. BUT I had planned to use the input shaft used on the dodge v8 gas models which are exactly 1” longer (allowing for my 1” adapter plate). It didn’t dawn on me until later that the dodge gas v8 input shafts were 22T correlating with the 5.61. I found a guy with a 5.61 nv4500 and we traded. I would’ve loved to use the 6.34 nv4500 but there are no extra long input shafts for them on the market. I have actually never heard of a hydrogen generator but I will look them up right now!!

It has a 5 lug GM corporate 14 bolt from a Fleetwood Limo (or commercial chassis hearse). With 4.10s and an e-locker that came from an H2. He would tow upwards of 7k with it. How does that work...the 1" adapter? Does the new transmission have a longer input shaft? (Is that what determined the 1" thickness).

That is correct. There were 4 variations of this transmission. All of them being the same length as the original sm420 minus the dodge gas version of the nv4500 which had an exactly 1” longer input shaft. My second vehicle was a 41 military 1/2 ton closed cab pickup with a winch. It got about 9mpg and would drive through, over, and push or pull about anything. The early trucks had 4.88 gears and 55mph top speed. No low range but a 4 speed crash box with a granny low that you only used off road or to get a lot of weight moving, it was good for 9mph. It had the shifter, emergency brake floor handle, and a in/out lever for the front axle. Had originally a 218 flathead and mine had a newer 56 Plymouth 230 that gave it about 30 more hp and the same mpg. It actually drove and stopped pretty well after I fixed some things, really miss it but figured I needed a real car so I sold it to buy my Dart I still own in 79. Enjoy it, you still see those around here on the west coast but certainly aren't as common as when I was a kid. I actually drove a similar truck years ago to help get fire wood but I think it was a 11/2 ton with no 2 speed rear. It had a beat sb chevy in it running on 7 cylinders but it always started and drove there and back. The neighbor knew I had the power wagon so I guess he figured I could deal with it, 4 speed as well but I think it had syncros in the upper gears.
