I used to practice a minimum of 2 hours a day (split up), that was the amount of time required to see visible progress. Then I had kids. I told my wife it’s not worth it for me to even pick up the guitar unless I can play that much. She told me I should appreciate the opportunity to even play for 5 minutes. As angry as that made me, she was right. Since then I’ve learned a love for the guitar I never had and I made really surprising progress. Play whenever you can and love every chance you get.

@@xchino0427I don’t practice like I used to, but I think I enjoy playing more. Sometimes my kids will ask me to learn a song so we can sing it together. Time well spent! Dreams sometimes change

I learned something very important from this: never have kids (I’m sorry, but that was too funny to not say). That being said, I never wanted to have them to begin with.

I like little videos like this. As someone who started to learn in their teens, but through poor health and lack of motivation I never got to anywhere substantial. I picked up the guitar again at the start of October after a 10 year hiatus and I'm muddling along. I don't really have any curriculum to follow so just winging it every day. I have always struggled with alternate picking arpeggios. No matter how much I practice I just cannot get to a stable place. So finding little "hints and tips" vids like this which is about where I am with guitaring is great.

I suppose that would depend on how one speaks. Just don’t try to do that using the micro machines guy or the monster truck rally commercial voiceover guy at first. Oh yeah and then there is the disclaimer or warnings read at the end of prescription adverts. Though the disclaimer guy would likely be easy as they are usually pretty monotone. 😁😁😁

Great video. Defining goals and planning what to practice is very important for growth and unlocking potential My Routine: Chromatic scale -> a little bit of Major/Minor scale -> Triads/Chord inversions on the neck -> anything I feel like to Goal: visualize any scale/chords on the neck with ease for playing chord melody (and to make sure i dont get rusty) I practice chromatic scale with diff root position (having my index/middle/pinky on the root), this helps visualize all the major/minor 2nd/3rd/6th/7th anywhere, which in turn allows me to play any scale all over the neck without memorizing a gazillion scale patterns as long as I know where's the root. I can also switch position seamlessly thanks to this. This is the backbone for practicing triads as it allows me to visualize what notes of a chord im fretting. Practicing triads allow me to play the same chords anywhere on the neck

Love your videos! I was an intermediate level guitarist back in the mid-90s, even playing in a crappy garage band. Then life got in the way and I dropped it for 28 years. Now I'm trying to get back into it and your videos are a fun way to remember and relearn all those skills and techniques. Keep it up!

That whole thing about trying to repeat a phrase on the guitar is actually brilliant. See, humans are kind of good at talking, to the point where we can kind of just make a sound without having to think about HOW to make the sound. We get to the point where we can instinctively create the right sound. And with that exercise, you are creating a connection between that process, and creating sound on the guitar. The idea is that you get to the point where you can focus on what sounds or notes you want to make next, with zero though put into HOW to make those sounds with the guitar.

This whole channel feels like it’s centered around the idea of how to keep your mental health while practicing guitar. It’s not serious or that academic, but you say things like “you will make progress when you enjoy yourself” Anyway, I think it’s pretty cool thanks for making videos.

"works wonders but doesnt sound fun". I respect Vai a ton and dont wanna be a hater but that phrase kinda perfectly sums his music up for me, too. You gonna sound how you practice and you should have a little bit of fun in practice sometimes I think. :D

when i got my first guitar i just thought it would be fun to learn. but then i realized i had no clue wtf i was doing. so kinda went to my grandpa and dad who..... can play basic chords and sing to them. but my grandpa taught me how to read tab which was a bonus. but that didnt really help me until i found a old hippy that was giving guitar lessons. and i kinda did that for a few years until it wasnt fun anymore. but during covid years later i was bored so put new strings on and tried to learn some songs from games i was playing to keep busy during what i thought would be a short lockdown. and it kinda brought back the fun. just remembering what little i remembered and applying it to something i wasnt told to do. i guess there isnt really a genera i like. its just kinda whatever im into at the moment.

Commit to just practicing without a strict time period. Just getting tour guitar out is half the challenge. Without a 30 or whatever time period to push back on you are more likely to just start. Then have a plan for what and how you spend your time.

I will say for majority of everyone learning to play should focus on fun, not work! I took lessons to read sheet music and be efficient. That was torture. Made me not interested in learning because it was boring. redlight Blue is correct have fun and passion. Also learn 5 popular easy songs to play for friends. Majority of non players cant tell whats a complicated piece to a easy one. They'll be happy from your art.

Is it crazy to assume that you can still make very good progress with just doing each category of Steve Vai's workout for one hour each and combine it with a couple hours of learning a new piece, thus doing a 5 hours a day schedule? 🤔

Jam tracks are fun, i think people forget to learn some basics of music though, which means theory... and ear training... most guitar players rely on shapes, which yes, its all movable, but not having the understanding why things sound off even if in key, or why your solos sound like scales rather than melodies... so it takes a combination of mental and physical training, speed is no good if its sloppy or out of key... random notes that are in key but dont folow the chord progression are not great.. or the tonal notes of said chords
