No tourists here in 1990, I visited in 2000 and it was full of tourists. Streets full of cars and motobikes, the girls looked fashionable. This country transformed so quickly. But there's something honest and beautiful about these old days that I wish to have experienced.

Tôi Là Người Việt Nam , Tôi sinh vào năm 1981 . Ngày ăn cơm độn với ngô khoai sắn... nói chung là đói khổ cùng cực. Và bây giờ 2024 đã khá hơn rất nhiều , điều kiện kinh tế đầy đủ , sướng hơn những năm 1990 gấp 1000 lần . Cảm ơn những người lãnh đạo đất nước . Tự hào về đất nước Việt Nam, tự hào về lịch sử Việt Nam. Cảm ơn video đã đưa tôi về quá khứ .

I was born in Cam Ranh Bay in 1974, moved to US in 1987 with family. This brings back lots of memories growing up. Kids back then didn’t even have proper shoes or slip on slippers to go school or to play soccer. Today, it’s AMAZING to see how fast Vietnam has developed within only 35 years. Much love & respect to the people. I can’t wait to come back visit my beautiful motherland someday.

They truly rose from the ashes. Looking at Vietnam today, no one can imagine what they had to go through. In just 35 years, everything has changed so much. It's no wonder many people still think Vietnam is underdeveloped.

I was born and raised in Berlin Germany but had the privilege to visit my home country almost every year. One of my fondest memories are the times when I was a little boy playing in our garden with my cousins in the late 90s. Yes our country was poor but I don’t know why, although materialistically speaking we didn’t have anything I felt like our people were happier. I was looking forward so much to coming back home every year and seeing the small changes. The changes went from small to huge and now my country is prosperous like never before. I am so proud of what my countrymen have went through and although I miss my old humble Vietnam, I look forward to the new modern and young Vietnam. 🇻🇳

I am Vietnamese, born in the 70s of the last century, in the north, living in the countryside until 1990, then in Hanoi. The images are too familiar. A time of hunger and hardship but always want to remember, want to go back to memories, old nostalgia. A time of hunger and hardship but with my feeling when looking at each person, I see them happier with a bright smile, the people are thinner but healthy and agile. Thank you to the author for keeping and sharing.

OH MY GOD! I LOVE IT. It feels like memories flow back to my mind. I was born in 2006, when i was young, i still felt these daily lives, activities of Việt Nam. As for growing up, it's lesser these activities and they modernized it. Viet Nam really changes rapidly in those years!

@@hanhbui9329 Ôi thời này mà các cô chú học AMS chắc giờ các cô chú thành đạt lắm ạ , bố cháu học cấp 3 trường làng ở Nam Định , trong 1 lớp chọn mà phần đa là trượt chuyên Lê Hồng Phong mà giờ các cô chú ấy cũng rất thành đạt ạ , thực sự đến đời cháu vẫn thiếu 0,5 vô chuyên nên cháu nể phục và ngưỡng mộ HS và cựu HS chuyên vô cùng

Wow this is truly art. Im a viet, born and lived and is living in modern day vietnam, and to be frank, i've grown so accustomed to the industrilization and fast paced living style of western media that i've kinda became distant to my own home. I didnt act cocky or anything, its just i dont like going to my father's hometown during the holidays like i used to, i dont like the simple, traditional foods that i used to. Seeing this truly humble me. It might not be the perfect word to describe my feelings but its all i can think of. My parents are born in the 60s, but i was born in the late 2000s (crazy ik). So you can imagine the distance in how my parents and i perceive the world. Just hope to see more things like this to see a glimpse of my parents' past and how hard theyve worked for me to have just today, not even the smartphone im typing this on. Yall have to understand, things changed so much that I can't imagine the hardship that my father went through when he was my age. Of course, I believe his story, dad lore is always interesting to hear. For reference, he grew up on rice fields and lust green grass of the countryside. I grew up in the sea of concrete and urban land. The definition of "struggle" itself is not the same for both of us. for him it's doing the most to survive, financially stable... for me it's utilizing everything to be better prepared for adulthood. In fact, my youngest sister who is 7 years younger than me also have generational difference. The day I said "back in MY days" I legit have to pause and ask myself if I'm getting old. As a child she enjoyed way more than what I had.

Good archived video! Just a need for clarification, despite all the embargoes imposed by the West following the 1975 unification war, Vietnam also experienced two wars with China and one with the Khmer Rouge. Following the liberation of Cambodia (or invasion as portrayed by the Western media), additional embargoes (even from China) were placed on Vietnam. We persevered and thrived.

Right after the 1975 against the american oppression and involvement we have to immediately mobilize our troops to reinforce to withstand chia intervention and invasion moreover we are willing to help our dear comrades and friends to overthrow the Khmer rouge but even at that time or at present Khmer later generations still refer us as invaders not liberators

@@gianglucas my friend, she's half vietnamese and also from hanoi, she said that some ppl used B52 to make spoons, fork, dishes, equipment for medical treatment.....i didn't think a strong and giant weapon would become daily stuff for Vietnamese ppl. I appreciate those ppl lol. I've been to VN twice but haven't seen the B52 =))

Beautiful country. The footage shows many locations that is probably close to where my mom and dad were born back in the war, they grew up in villages within a few miles. The country was torn apart literally back then. My parent never got to stay near HN. My dad - due to the New Economic Movement, he left his family with hope to rebuild the country. My mom - due to her family moved back to Middle VN after the 75. They met back in the early 90s in Quang Ngai (yes, that's the province where the Pinkville incident happened), which is where I grew up. Though they grew up after the worst part of the war, the imprint the war left was immense. The country struggled after the war and went through nearly 20 years of what is now referred as "Thời Bao Cấp" - the Subsidy Period. When being asked, most of the adults that lived through it would probably describe this period as "Khổ".

Xem những thước phim quay về hơn 30 năm trước thật xúc động,chúng tôi những người sinh ra ở thập kỷ 50 thế kỷ trước trải qua hầu hết những cuộc chiến tranh của Việt Nam (ngoại trừ trống Pháp)trong thế kỷ 20,mọi cung bậc cuộc sống đã được nếm trải,dù đã xa quê 25 năm nhưng vẫn luôn nhớ về vn cả trong giấc mơ. Đã bao người thân và bạn bè ra đi buồn vui lẫn lộn vì cuộc sống đã tốt hơn mà nhiều người thế hệ chúng tôi không còn được hưởng. Cảm ơn bạn đã đến vn thời gian này để chúng tôi được xem lại những năm tháng đất nước Việt đã trải qua những khắc nghiệt và chúng tôi đã vươn lên để ngày nay có một cuộc sống đã tốt hơn.

What a lively and beautiful video! It reminds me of peaceful and challenging moments in the past when we just obtained peace officially around 5 years. However, we could see that everyone seemed to be so happy and optimistic with their work and lives. I believe Vietnam will develop strongly and become a modern and wealthy country in the near future. These were the most peaceful times after the wars that devastated our country and 1990, 2000, 2010 were the most peaceful times and focused on building and developing the country. If I had one wish, I would want it. Come back to this moment to feel it again

Là một người con sinh ra vào những năm cuối cùng của thế kỷ 20, tôi thấy quá khứ đâu đó của mình trong đó. Xuất thân là một gia đình nghèo khổ, chỉ mong có cơm ăn chứ đừng nói là thịt cá. Đi học phải đi xin sách tập cũ kỹ để có mà học cái chữ, mỗi bửa cơm chan nước tương, ăn cơm với đường trắng, canh mồng tơi không còn quá xa lạ. Ngẫm nghĩ lại thấy cuộc sống khi ấy thật khó khăn tuy khổ cực nhưng vẫn vui vẻ lạc quan sống qua ngày. Hiện tại thì cuộc sống đã khá khắm hơn, không còn phải lo cái ăn cái mặc, hằng ngày phải đau đầu ngày mai mình sẽ ăn món gì, thèm món gì để không bị trùng lặp. Chổ nào bán ngon, chổ nào view đẹp,... Đến bây giờ Việt Nam đã thoát khỏi vòng vay cấm vận là một thành tựu to lớn nhất của dân tộc chúng ta. Thoát khỏi cái nghèo đói, đi lên từ đống đổ nát. Với tốc độ phát triển như hiện nay thì đến năm 2050 VN sẽ là quốc gia phát triển bắt kịp với nền tiên tiến của thế giới sau bao lâu năm dày vò bởi chiến tranh.

I was born in 1990s, but not in Vietnam, in a province in China that borders Vietnam (Guangxi or Quang Tay in Vietnamese). What shows in this video is astonishingly similar to what I saw as a kid in my hometown and home province, but in a different way. My hometown started it's development earlier than Hanoi, by 1990 there were already some skyscrapers, hotels and modern shopping malls in the city. But the vast majority of the streets and markets were still similar to Hanoi in 1990 --- people wearing poor quality clothes, squatting on the street to work/sell/craft/wait/eat (basically everything), putting money in the conical hat (yes, conical hats in my home province are as common as in Vietnam). Even the way people talk and walk was the same. It was already rare to see animals carrying loads of stuff when I was old enough to remember things, but sometimes you could still find them in the countryside. I can keep going forever on this, but it just brings so many childhood memories back to me. Thank you so much for sharing this that allows me to have a chance to recall those scenes I've seen and experienced as a kid.

Look like USSR but poorer, i was not born at this time,my grandparent not live in Vietnam at this point.They live in USSR,after 1991,the Soviet Union disintegrated,and they go back Vietnam,my Grandfather at this point is a tupolev pilots of VNA.I want to learn about my grandparents' time,even though they did not live in Vietnam between 1990-1991.But I can also imagine how they lived at this time.Thank You !

I was 7 yrs old in 1990 and this was my childhood. Exactly as I remembered. It's been so long ago that refreshing my memory is really nice. I left vn in 1995, and when I first came back in 2011, it was mostly unrecognizable. That first sight when I returned was memorable, so familiar yet unrecognizable.

I was born in Ha Noi in 1991. At the age of 5 or 6, I also spent time in the rural area with my grandma. These scenes right here, whether it is the city or countryside, are very familiar to me because they deeply rooted in my childhood. Yeah we were broke back then because of the wars and the sanctions and all, but we have built and rebuilt this country again by working together, whether it is the city or countryside. And that, is the beauty of it. No matter how far we have progressed, history and culture will never be forgotten. Proud being a Vietnamese.

The main problem was bao cấp, not the sanction because sanction or not Vietnam wouldn't trade with the West. We were stuck with the Eastern bloc because of ideological reasons. Đổi Mới 1986, that's when the economy bounced back, and that's years before the sanction was lifted. Then the collapse of the Soviet Union, Vietnam was freed from the eastern bloc influence, then normalized relationship with the US because the Soviet Union was gone and Vietanm adopted free-market capitalism so there was no reason for them to remain hostile.

@@ribos2762 The main problem is blocking trade. Even during the Doimoi period, the economy could hardly grow. The country's poorest time was 1990-1994 when the US kept the embargo and China recently lifted the embargo. Vietnam GPD has grown over 7% in only 3 periods, the period when the US lifted the embargo 1994-2000, the period 2005-2010 and the period 2015-2020, all 3 started from foreign FDI sources. It can be said that Vietnam do Doimoi because of global trade. If there are any trade barriers, Vietnam will suffer disaster.

@@hathuan796 VN had many problems after 1975. Sanction by the West is one. Incompetent and vindictive leaderships was two. The war in Cambodia, planned economy and socialism were the others. There was a part where women sell apple in this video. I grew up in Saigon and only once did I saw an apple before I left VN. A relative went on a business trip to the north and brought back some apples as gift for my aunt. Basically what I am saying is that there was no trade between the North and South.

Was born in Saigon, 2010. My Dad went through the Vietnam War, 1975 when he was only 6 months old. A part of the crashed babylift flight that killed nearly every child onboard of a US Air Force C-5, which crashed near RW 25L of Tân Sân Nhứt (Now Cảng hàng không quốc tế Tân Sân Nhất). My grandma was the volunteer of the flight, she sadly was killed. My Dad was adopted by Australians, but he left and went back to Saigon when he was 8 years old.

I was born in 2003 in Hanoi, move abroad for a period and return for highschool and uni, honestly it feel so distance yet so familiar some of the shot in Hanoi street was. Obviously the old car and the metal working mostly do away by the time i was conscious but the street and the worker looking no different then they are today. The city look alot more modern now and life becoming faster so to speak. In a way the old time feel more charming then it did now but that really just rose tinted glasses that im seeing it in the video, i enjoy my life now and i see it for the better.

Khi xem những hình ảnh này tôi lại cảm thấy bồi hồi. Cả một bầu trời tuổi thơ với những cánh đồng, những người nông dân, những cô bán hàng ngoài chợ, bác thợ mộc... GDP per capita of Vietnam in 1989 is 96.13 USD, among the top 5 lowest in the world. And now everything has changed, the country recently has joined the semiconductor, AI and green tech race. Vietnam government sure still have many problems but the country now is one of the most stable and peaceful in the world.

Chúa ơi cs ngày xưa thật khó khăn nhưng vô cùng quý giá vì có được độc lập. 1990 mình vừa sinh ra khi học hết lớp 5 đã hiểu cuộc sống khó khăn ăn cơm độn chỉ mong Tết để đc ăn ngon mặc đẹp .không có điện .đi bộ đi học rất xa học một buổi đi làm phụ gd một buổi nhưng mà chơi vui mãi 2005 làng mới có điện bây giờ giờ cs đổi khác nhiều chả thiếu gì

I visited Saigon often in my teenage years in the 90s. It's definitely changed quite a bit. Barely anyone owned cars back then. Now you see Lambos and other exotic cars almost daily.

Oh, my country when I was a child! A long time immersed in war, poverty and backwardness. The communist, subsidized economic system was a big mistake (like Cuba today). We realized that bad thing and tried to change, study well to escape poverty. This was the first stage of innovation to a market economy, so we learned English. And now, my country is developing rapidly, being a friend of America and Western countries and many other countries! Although it is not yet a rich country, life has improved a lot. Love Vietnam!

@@vnchampions631 như thế nào là sai lầm hả bạn, cơ chế tập trung bao cấp nó có ưu điểm riêng của nó vào thời điểm giai đoạn đất nước còn chiến tranh và vừa thoát chiến tranh, bị các nước bao vây cấm vận, tình hình kinh tế xã hội còn phức tạp. Đúng là theo thời gian, quan liêu bao cấp không còn phù hợp với tình hình đất nước, kìm hãm phát triển và làm khủng hoảng kinh tế cũng như đời sống của dân. Quá trình đổi mới cũng là quyết định tất yếu để loại bỏ các khuyết điểm, sự lỗi thời của cơ chế tập trung bao cấp, chứ tôi nghĩ không có sai lầm lớn nào ở đây bạn ạ.

The main problem was bao cấp, not the trade embargo, even if there was no trade embargo Vietnam still wouldn't trade with the West because of the Soviet Union influence and because of ideological reasons. We were allowed to trade with the eastern bloc only. We could only choose one of the two, either the west or the eastern bloc. The economy bounced back in 1987 after đổi mới, kinh tế tập trung bao cấp xhcn was replaced with free-market capitalism. That's years before the trade embargo was lifted. Then the Soviet collapsed and we were free to normalize relation and open negotiation with the West by ourselves.

Hola, soy de Argentina, estuve hace unos dias en Hanoi. Puedo ver que muchas imagenes de la calle se mantienen aunque sean para el turista y otras son genuinamente. La vida sigue sucediendo en la calle. Antes de llegar vivi un año en Nueva Zelanda y aunque es muy estable y se gana buen sueldo en trabajos basicos, no hay vida en la calle. Ojala cuando Vietnam dentro de 20 se desarrolle aun mas, no pierdan su escencia y mantengan sus costumbres. Creo que vietnam mejoro gracias a que abrio su economia.... tambien estuve en Cuba y la diferencia es muy grande (dependen mucho del estado y viven peor que en 1990, ya que no tienen ayuda externa de rusia, poca inversion privada ni industria) . En el caso de vietnam hace falta mas precencia del estado, sobre todo para el transporte publico y bancarizar los comercios (por lo menos para el extranjero hay dificultades) . Pero si continuan en esta linea politica creo que dentro de 20 años estaran mucho mas desarrollados. En Argentina los cambios politicos, la deuda externa y las condiciones politicas que impone Estados Unidos (ya ni siquiera secretas) destruyen al pais cada vez mas. Me gustaria saber como es la relacion de Vietnam con sus paises vecinos como China y Tailandia

Nhưng Việt Nam : Không có gì quý hơn độc lập tự do . Thứ ấy phương Tây phụ thuộc Mỹ thì không thể có được . Kể cả Nhật, Hàn, Úc cũng không có độc lập như Việt Nam !

I managed to have a mind-blowing experience watching this documentary. Born in 2000s, I've always been wondering how my parents' and grands' life was back then, I'm just told that life was hard, poor and tough but it's difficult to imagine fully, this video is an excellent answer to my curious.
