practice saying "song" and add "ah" at the end so "songah" and then cut out the s and it will sound like "onga". just prolong the o and it will be "oo nga". totally agree with you about the value of learning the local language!

i don't think gabi leaves are called laing. laing is the name of the dish after it's cooked :-) correct me if i'm wrong folks

I'm not sure my assumption is based on the bag of leafs I got in the supermarket saying laing on it haha

To cook the gabi leaves, put onions, garlic, ginger and chillies (optional) in a pan together with the 2nd piga of the coconut. When the coconut milk simmers put in the gabi leaves. Do not stir. When the gabi leaves are already wilted and the coconut milk is 80% evaporated put in the unang piga of the coconut. Season. When the coconut milk is 90% evaporated turn off the fire. You now have laing. The dish is called laing. The leaves are called dahon ng gabi or taro leaves.

Well done.on your Tagalog, Susie. You are improving exponentially. You'll get that "nga" one day. Enjoy outing with your in-laws. 😁👍❤

i noticed you can pronounce the 'ng' but with words having them at the end of a word like 'lang' or 'maraming'. sometimes with filipino slang we say oo nga or commonly, oo nga no! as if it's 1 word which sounds like, honga no! the 'h' may help you in imitating other words ending in 'ng' that you can already pronounce. maybe you can practice it that way then transition into omitting the 'h' which will sound like, onga no, or just onga! then ultimately pronounce them as they were as their own independent words, oo nga! :D

We usually boil the dried gabi leaves first to rehydrate and clean the leaves. Once rehydrated/wilted, we discard the water. This also means you will use less coconut. milk

I think they said that Laing is cooked longer and with lots of coconut milk .. the coconut milk is like has to be absorbed by the leaves or no more sauce ..

The word “nga” is you have to learn from a Cow sound “oooo ngaaaa” or “ngaaaa”. If you heard a Cow on the field, it sounds like that.

That's what foriegners want in Philippines.Tourist makes them specials.Infact they are ordinary ppl in their own countries I don't get it.But,that's how Filipinos are.Very kind and very polite to foriegners. I'm not saying all Filipinos are. But,majority of them.Thats why,I missed my country. Its so happy to be in my country, and nothing compares to another countries. Of course, there's beauty in other countries.I live in Australia for 35 yrs now.and been in other countries. But,my mother nature Philippines is so different So happy.

I miss the Jollibee in the Philippines, especially the price. The ones here in the UK are atrocious. Both in service and price.
