I have a PTSD from experiences in MY country - and it's in Eastern Europe... we have freedom but many times we're being treated very inhumanely by the government institutions and the medical staff. I once here worked at a job where you had to go to the bathroom in the bushes (in the public park) - or hold it for 6 hours or so. There were no proper tools, we did a dirty manual job, and couldn't wash our hands afterwards, not even before lunch. Getting up at 5am wasn't an easy task either. I was even purposely given a place to work as far away from my home so I couldn't return for a lunch break. It ain't that hard for me to imagine North Korea... But I have to say communism in the Soviet Union was a much better "place" to be than some post-soviet countries... At least we had advanced medicine and were treated with dignity. I'm glad this girl is in the US now... I wish everyone (especially from NK) would get the chance to travel where they wish.

Since you apparently can't count, that was BEFORE Trump became President. They have been torturing their people for about 70 years, which means that Kennedy, Johnson, Carter, Clinton , AND Obama did nothing about them, either. Clinton, btw, gave them nuclear technology and buttloads of cash - delivered in person by Carter - if they promised to be nice to their people and not make nuclear weapons with the tech. The split between north and south Korea was not that long ago, it's been 71 years since the split, and a lot of people in South Korea still have family in North Korea. What sucks the most is that the divide most likely wouldn't have happened if America didnt force their way in, saying they'll free everyone, only to make both South and North Korea suffer from hunger since they're gluntious bastards and then just left after 3/4 years of doing nothing except stealing all the rice. Then they left South Korea to deal with the issues of North Korea, only for South Korea said "fuck it" and looked away from North Korea. It's frustrating to know there wouldnt be this issue if America didn't try to make this their business, because if they didnt try that bs, it's possible South Korea and North Korea would have both been free countries right now, instead of just the one.

Just because there is a worse place to be does not mean we should tolerate curuption or injustice in our society. Of course life in North Korea has greater hardships, but if everyone starts to let things slide because of that then eventually there will be nowhere safe left. Nowhere is perfect which means that everywhere still has things that need to be fixed and things that are important to fight for. The world does its best to take away peoples power, young peoples in particular, and I for one an honered to live in a society where people don't let that happen and instead use it to fight against things they know are wrong.

Well America is technically worse because it has destabilized economies around the world to make itself richer. You guys literally started a WAR in the Middle East 20 years ago that has killed millions and has repercussions to this day. I would say that's better than torturing the people of your own country out of a misguided belief about what is good for them.

F A K E T E A R S O N P R E T T Y F A C E Please do your due diligence and research this woman's credibility. She has already been exposed as a fraud exaggerating/fabricating her claims. Her stories have been inconsistent and contradictory over the years, raising questions as to the veracity of her claims. Anyone who is tempted to believe that this woman might be telling the truth should look up ***. Park Yeonmi is a compulsive liar and a narcissist. She has been caught in a million lies and simply profits off her NK sob story and by virtue signaling. No better than Greta Thunburg!!!!! Short version, her story is full of holes and she has changed it multiple times (she can't even remember it consistently which is a problem with people who make things up since things that actually happened are just plain easier to remember than things you made up for profit.) Also see "Why do North Korean defector testimonies so often fall apart?" in The Guardian. The combination of cash incentives (from various political organizations as well as the government) and the media’s constant pursuit for disturbing stories encourage refugees to exaggerate for financial rewards as well as popularity which in her case, she was able to use to tour the world AND become an actress. Also look up North Korean defector Shin Dong-hyuk who wrote a bestselling book about his life in a gulag he was never actually in and admitted the fact AFTER earning vast sums of money with a memoir which he made up.! We have to do a great job in putting together a very strong case that exposes Park as a deceitful opportunist & charlatan who took advantage of the Western society's goodwill & sympathy for her own financial gain. I also noticed that she seems to really enjoy the spotlight & relish in her celebrity status, which made me very weary about her real motives. But her contradictions, distortions & lies can't be excused away or justified. So many commenters here have made asinine remarks about trauma, developing memories, age counting differences, etc. in order to deny or deflect the objective facts presented here. Really sad that people become so emotionally invested in someone like Park to the point they are unable or unwilling to critically analyze the reality & the facts that clearly demonstrate her manipulation & fabrication of the facts. She can't seem to get her story straight . Anything about the life about her family is said to be lies. Life in North Korea may be shit. Life in many countries of the world is shit. She was never a “defector”. At most she is a refugee, at least, an economic migrant. Her mother and herself lives like princesses according to testimony of people who knew her while she lived in the DPKR. She has become a Millionaire and is living the dream. She didn't waste any time capitalizing on the misfortunes of her fellow North Koreans. Really sucks that KZbin has made it so easy for con artists to create a channel with a fake bleeding heart story and get super rich off the caring public that falls for it. There's so much of this going on across many different subjects. ***Please google this: "The Strange Tale of Yeonmi Park" in The Diplomat
