The song was inspired by a real woman called Ma Barker and her sons, who were at the top of the most wanted in the 1930s. Ma Barker and her son Fred were killed after a 45 minutes gunfight by the FBI.

Bella, Liz Mitchell was just in my hometown of Toronto Canada last night and I had the privilege of being there. 70 years old and still killing it vocally. She didn’t sound much different than she did here in 1979. I am an ‘88 baby but my Dad had the Nightflight To Venus album on cassette tape. I wore it out as a kid and have loved Boney M since.

But he was never allowed to be heard: The first recording of Boney M had come out before there was a lineup. It was more or less a toy project by producer Frank Farian. When there was the first request of a TV station for "them" to appear on a show, he had to hurriedly get a lineup whose outer appearance would fit the music and the name of the band. All female members were after a while allowed to sing their parts themselves. The guys voice timbre was so different from Frank Farian's that his mic was always muted on live appearances, and instead Farian's studio recording was played in playback.

The guy was called "The king of disco" and he really was and about this song: It was inspired from a story of a woman which had 4 sons back in 30's, she robbed many banks and she finnally was killed with her sons, the producer (Frank Farian, It's a german producer) found this story interesting. Much Boney M. songs were inspired from true stories (Ma Baker, El Lute, Rasputin and much more) I hope those ideas helped you a little bit, I know what I'm talking about because I am a big fan of this group since I was a little kid. And a little fun fact: the "Ma Ma Ma Ma" from Lady Gaga's Poker Face was inspired from Ma Baker.

Boney M. was a Euro-Caribbean vocal group created by German record producer Frank Farian, who was the group's primary songwriter. Originally based in West Germany, the four original members of the group's official line-up were Liz Mitchell and Marcia Barrett from Jamaica, Maizie Williams from Montserrat and Bobby Farrell, a performing artist from Aruba. The group was formed in 1976 and achieved popularity during the disco era of the late 1970s. Since the 1980s, various line-ups of the band have performed with different personnel. The band has sold around 80 million records worldwide and is known for international hits including "Daddy Cool", "Ma Baker", "Belfast", "Sunny", "Rasputin", "Mary's Boy Child - Oh My Lord" and "Rivers of Babylon".[3

Frank Farian is also the producer behind 'Milli Vanilli', where he also employed lip-syncing dancers to front the act. Personally, I don't mind that he used models and dancers to front the groups, while the real talent behind the music was in the studio. But it sucks for anyone who bought into the stage performers as being the real talent behind the music, when they had very little do to with the creation of these tracks.

Hi, my dear - fact is that the "lead singer" Bobby Farell never sang a note in ANY song, in ANY video - a gifted dancer, but otherwise.... . That was done by the producer and creator of Boney M. Frank Farian (a German genius) himself. He has been famous and infamous with another group "Milli Vanilli" - the two singers and dancers were also absolutely voiceless in every performance - sung by studio musicians of Frank Farian's grace. That is FACT !!! The girls of the band Boney M. are all however real singers, especially the lady with the slight scar on her face (Maicy) is still on tour today and meanwhile also a bit older! But still good!

Boney M was Frank Farians band, the 3 that actually sang are Frank, Marcia Barret and Liz Mitchell(Bobby only mimed to Frank's singing for many years until he was allowed to record vocals in the 1980''s, so the male voice you hear in most of the videos that you will see is Frank's). Do a reaction to their song "Rivers of Babylon" I think it was their first and biggest hit. It has a fantastic rythyms. and great percussions, and vocals. Disco derived from the french "Discotheque" Paris France were disco music was born. Orchestration is a word. But sweetie they are not considered an orchestra in musical terms. Music production, maybe more to this genre. Like your background song I think it's "Mercy Mercy Me" one of my favorite to play percussions to. Nice reaction.

Of course it isn't live, because of two reasons: 1) Boney M weren't performing live. They were a studio group and their "live" performances were usually lip-synced. 2) All guest stars at Sopot Festival did lip sync, because they usually were coming for a very short period to do the performance (sometimes even just a few hours, they arrived shortly before the performance and left shortly after) and there was no time to do any rehearsals - also it was easier for the television (who was the main organizer of this festival).

Boney M. was a disco band produced by Frank Farian that had international success, especially in the 1970s, with songs such as Daddy Cool, Rivers of Babylon and Ma Baker. Boney M. has sold over 150 million records worldwide, including more than 60 million singles. If I'm not mistaken, the contract with the group was limited to a certain period of time. If I'm not mistaken, after the group dissolved, they tried to found a new one, but that was banned because of copyright. The group was brought from Jamaica. Everything else was history. Imagine Frank Faraian went to Jamaica and got some unknown group and signed a temporary record deal with them like Boney M

They were very talented. Disco music. lol. My parents liked them when I was growing up as a kid (late '70s - mid '80s). They had their records. lol

The best thing about "German" Boney M was, that in 1978/79 they were played permanently and their records sold in Ocho Rios, Jamaica, every 200m along the beaches... The air was full of Boney M. I did not expect that.

Fun fact about this song, it's actually based on a Tunisian folk song called Sidi Mansour. The lyrics were meant to help the song get into the American market. But they were mostly just famous in Europe during their time.
