1)Reach back 2) return. Which is correct?
@everydayenglish_in_Malayalam2 жыл бұрын
"Reach back" is not very common and is used only in very very informal & casual situations Instead, "Get Back" or "Return" is more widely used.

@@aanavina9782 here ,,,two past incidents are in this sentence. So we can use 'had in first one.I think so. Ok
@everydayenglish_in_Malayalam2 жыл бұрын
It is correct. "had left" is past perfect which is used for something that happened before another past action "arrived".

'They left the home long before I arrived' or 'they had left home long before I arrived' Which is right.
@everydayenglish_in_Malayalam2 жыл бұрын
The correct one is "'they had left home long before I arrived'. As there are 2 actions in the past, you have to use Past Perfect . "had left" is past perfect which is used to denote an action that happened before another past action "arrived"

1. They had left the house long before I arrived 2. They left the house long before I arrived സ്പോകെൻ ഇംഗ്ലീഷിൽ both are correct. Formal / written ഇംഗ്ലീഷിലും, ഗ്രാമർ പരീക്ഷകളിലും വളരെ strict grammar നോക്കുകയാണെങ്കിൽ " had left " എന്ന past perfect tense ഉപയോഗിക്കുന്നതാവും കൂടുതൽ ശരി

They had left the house long before I arrived alle.
@everydayenglish_in_Malayalam2 жыл бұрын
Your are right BUT in Spoken English, especially when using "before" or "after" it is not essential to use "had" because the order of the action is clear (left, arrive).

1. Your language is very poor. Eg. Reach back,. 2.we had to wait.... തെറ്റാണു. We have to wait...... എന്നാണ് വേണ്ടത്.. Past perfect ഇന്റെ ഉപയോഗം പഠിപ്പിക്കുന്ന സാറിന് അറിയില്ല 3. They left the the home before I arrived. .. They had left....... ആണ് ശരി. Past perfect tense.
@everydayenglish_in_Malayalam2 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much for your valuable feedback. Please note my comments below regarding your points: 1. [your point] "They left the the home before I arrived. .. They had left....... ആണ് ശരി. Past perfect tense. [my comment] -------------------------------------- Pls refer below related info from the 2002 CGEL (The Cambridge Grammar of the English Language) regarding OMISSION of Past Perfect : "Under certain conditions the perfect may be omitted with little or no effect on the temporal interpretation. The construction to be considered here has the perfect in a subordinate clause following such prepositions as after, as soon as, or before etc For eg: i. She left [ after | as soon as | before ] he had spoken to her. -- [perfect] ii. She left [ after | as soon as | before ] he spoke to her. -- [non-perfect] --------------------------------------- So, based on the above explanation from CGEL, I think, at least in casual Spoken English we are allowed to say "They left before I arrived". .Though I agree we should use the Past Perfect in formal situations & in written English for it to be grammatically correct. 2) [your point] "we had to wait.... തെറ്റാണു. We have to wait...... എന്നാണ് വേണ്ടത്.. [ Past perfect ഇന്റെ ഉപയോഗം പഠിപ്പിക്കുന്ന സാറിന് അറിയില്...] [My comment] In Spoken English, its very important to take into account the context / situation while interpreting the meaning of the words used and what the speaker is trying to convey: Please see the examples below: a) if someone were to ask the question " Why did it take you so long at the clinic?" The possible reason could be that there were a lot of patients waiting before us, and so we "HAD TO WAIT for a long time before we could see the doctor". We cannot use "have to wait" as we are referring to an action in the past. b) if a question is asked "shall we go to the ABC clinic?", the possible answer could be "No, lets go to XYZ clinic. At ABC clinic, you HAVE TO wait for a long time to see the doctor" “HAVE TO' is used for the present and future tense, while “HAD TO” is used for the past tense. The action which has been just completed at the moment or is in continuous form uses the verb 'have to,” whereas the actions that have been completed in the past use the verb “had to”. 3) [your point] Reach back REACH BACK is used here in a very informal/casual manner to mean "get back home/office etc". As you might know, the actual meaning of Reach Back is different and cannot be used to mean "get back" in formal English especially in written English. Lastly, this channel is mainly focused on teaching Easy Spoken English Sentences for casual / informal situations and does NOT purport to teach Formal English Grammar. Thank you once again.
