Culture is different in the different parts of the US. In the midwest it is disrespectful to be late. It is not tolerated. You are expected to be 10 minutes early to work or most appointments such as doctor or dentist. If you are not on time for a dinner reservation, they do not hold your table.
@aparationsАй бұрын
I'm in the US. I had one job where they said if you aren't 10 minutes early you are late. Then I had a job where there wasn't a schedule so you could come and go as you pleased. My current job has a set start time but they are very flexible with it.

Back when I was in high school my band director had a saying that she drilled into our heads from day one: Early is on time. On time is late. Late is unacceptable.

A robber would have to be insane to walk into a house with an unknowable number of armed American Southerners in it at any given time.
@StochasticUniverseАй бұрын
Plot twist: The robber is also an armed American Southerner (and therefore insane, by definition).
@serpentinious7745Ай бұрын
@StochasticUniverse and walks right into 2 shotguns, 3 rifles, and a hunting crossbow while armed with a pistol. We Southerners might be dense, but we're not _that_ dense. Edit: The areas where people leave doors unlocked are the ones where everyone knows and looks out for each other. Mess with one person and the whole community will come after you. And they're a vengeful lot. I remember one time some looters came around from out of town after a hurricane. 3 of the neighbors used their cars to box the crooks in and held them until police arrived. The 2 lowlifes were outnumbered and outgunned.

In my home town there are occasions for which you are basically expected to show up 15 minutes to one hour late. One time I showed up to a party exactly on time and the host was still in the shower. Usually we end up with 2 to 4 early birds hanging out for half an hour, waiting for the rest to really start showing 30 minutes late.

I think Henya just misunderstands the nature of Thanksgiving. Like, she said, "I'd be there 10 minutes before" -- okay, but ten minutes before what, exactly? Ten minutes before dinner is served? 10 minutes before your Uncle Charlie gets drunk enough that he starts explaining why the Detroit Lions still suck, even though they have one of the best records in the NFL? Haha... (By the way, getting at least lightly buzzed on Thanksgiving is a great time and I strongly recommend it, speaking from personal experience. Or get full-on drunk, for best effect.) It's an all-day affair. It's very casual. Normally, even the dinner, which is nominally the highlight of the whole thing, is "sometime in the afternoon", partly just because of a lot of unknown and unknowable variables, like how long it will take for the turkey to actually cook. People guesstimate but you just don't really know (it's not like average people are cooking 20 pounds of poultry on a regular basis, so it's a bit of an experiment every year). The whole thing isn't running on military precision, like, "food's at 3:30pm, SHARP!" (My sister and her husband are both in the Navy, and when I spent Thanksgiving with them this year, they said dinner is "sometime between 3pm and 3.30" and it actually slipped to after 4pm because it took longer for the center of the turkey to hit 165 F than expected). It happens when it happens and people show up when they show up. It's Thanksgiving, not a funeral. :P It's SUPPOSED to be casual, easy, and fun. If someone shows up after dinner, they can grab some leftovers and use the microwave. That's what it's there for. Or if it's all gone...sorry, you snooze, you lose! But either way, the time just isn't that regimented. It's a celebration, not a job.

My impression is pretty much every weeb know of Doraemon, but most haven't watched a single episode. I could tell you if a random anime character is Doraemon, but I cannot reliably do the same with other characters from Doraemon.

@StochasticUniverseАй бұрын
Nephews and nieces are like the "light" version of parenthood. You get to play with the kids and watch them grow up, but you aren't actually responsible for them, haha. (Grandparenthood is the same, but you can't become a grandparent without passing through the fires of parenthood, first, so it doesn't have the same slacker cred. It's the sunset cruise for parents in retirement, though.)

depends on the culture. where i'm from we learn time management as part of growing up. and if someone comes late without a message with an acceptable reason why, then I walk and never contact them again. this also applies to business meetings. which is a massive clash with cultures where it is the norm to arrive "Fashionably late" since that indicates you're succesful. well ... then go do your million dollar deal with someone else and not me.
