Homework is bullshit. I get the concept of practice and the end goal is admirable. But it assumes that the student has no other interests or a job. When you make more in an hour of work than a teacher does, by doing skilled labor. Homework begins to feel like an impediment towards individual growth. Juggling school, any form of entertainment/hobby/ and a job means you have limited time. Having one aspect that demands more time, regardless of your life and what is in it, causes undue stress. Add in the fact that most highschools measure their success via college admissions and standardized test scores. Not the financial success of the graduate after entering the work force. And you create a system that forces college on students that would be better suited for trade schools or very specific college degrees with more blue collar opportunities. But that doesn't market well so you see massive pushes towards college. Regardless of the individual student's actual abilities. While you do not need a college degree to be successful, the knowledge and wisdom can invaluable. However, it is asinine to assert that you NEED a college education. It is a trap that large companies have fallen for. "We can get trained individuals, straight from college with no real training on our part." And it is a trap that students have fallen for. You will not be trained to the same standards that a highschool graduate was in the 1960s, upon securing a job. Even with a college degree, you will be less efficient and productive than a highschooler freshly graduated and trained by their employer in the 1960s. Because college is supposed to prepare you for the workforce... How many of the "required" classes actually apply to your career? How much money have you spent on information that is of a transitory nature regarding your career? You are forced to subsidize lessons that have no impact on your future. In the desire to expand the mind of all students. For the benefit of a few at the financial cost of all. Education needs to become the prerogative of the individual. You need to be able to say, no this information is not needed in my chosen field, please teach me what I need. Degrees need to be disregarded in favor of actual class load. If larger companies started to require certain classes instead of just a degree, you would see a lot of people applying for college classes. Not for degrees but for the actual information gained from classes. And as such, you will see a massive change in college culture. No longer is the degree the end all be all, but usable knowledge gained through the courses.
