Selling since’08 love your format. I went from 1% sell through to 3% for 2 months along with growing from 250 items to 800 items **Listing consistently** I have also ended & sell similar with all old items. Restructuring sell everything store. I I have a burn pile of over 2k items. My weakness is detail. I have to constantly look over my items to revise 😟

Thredup is as shady as they come. Last year, I sent them about 25 items. Because I did not want to pay extra to expedite processing, it took 3.5 months for them to list my items (they gave me at least 3 different dates). They kept several to list but returned the remainder in worse condition (dirty, obviously worn, etc). After their fees, I received NO MONEY for the items sold. None, zero. There were NWT items and I got ZILCH (ex: a 2020 BR dress.) Never again.

Thred Up doesn't depend on Ebay for sales. I've been following them for over 10 yrs because they are weird - and fluid with more changes than I can count; auctions, resale stores, subscription boxes, liquidations, all gone now but reasons people paid more. Their growth appears aimed offline pop-ups and moving into the repair space. Ebay is doing something for them or they'd drop it in 6mos. Don't discount larger size niche. It's style based v brand due to higher quality clothing is non-existent. It's 90% fast fashon. I've paid higher than retail for xxl Old Navy that are sold out/discontinued and know what fits.

Pretty sure Thredup posts on their website and has it cross post to eBay. While their eBay sell thru rate is low, they make the bulk of their sales on their website. Still think they should ditch their eBay store. It’s just not working well for them.

They are getting between 1.50 to 2.85 per piece with their boxes. That still seems Like a loss. And their boxes are full of H&M, Forever21 & Old Navy. I’ve come out ahead only because there will be maybe 2 or 3 items that pay for the box. Lately I’m getting NWT Fashion Nova which surprisingly sells good on Poshmark. Their website where they sell by the item may be where they’re making money. I am def taking Chris’ advise and looking for a new supplier. I bought several boxes from his store and I did really well with his Mens clothing. Was sad when his old inventory was gone. Great content here.

Got a lot of valuable information from this (and previous videos). I have an everything store and have ramped up optimizing my store by tweaking titles, adjusting price, adding relevant item specifics, and even ending and donating worst listing (no views aka buying mistakes). I also have stopped buying "project" pieces that have missing pieces or need minor repairs. By your standards, my store is still a "hobby" store as I only average one sell a day and try to list three items a day. My total items for sale is around 600 (and growing slightly) I have also decided to quit entire categories that either have a potential for higher returns (electronics) or are a PITA to ship (bulky or heavy or fragile). I have also pulled most incomplete (yet vintage) collectible toys from my store and bundled them for one low price just to move and be done with. Thanks again for all your tips and hard work. Glad I have not made your worse store ever list. PS There a still many suggestions you have made that I have not implemented but steady improvement.

I have an everything store as well, only 50 listed and 16 sales since I started last month. I'm have over 1000 items to list and I'm going through the stuff to just donate as well. I'm still struggling with my shipping though, so I'm not listing heavier items, which is definitely holding me back! On promoting listings, I just put whatever ad rate ebay suggests, any tips on that?

It's almost like ThreadUp uses eBay as their dumping ground for all not-so popular brands but makes them look bad either way with their negative feedback...and seem to almost show with their stock rating; which I'm sure is not just eBay but overall performance. Lime you always said, new people will never come back to eBay if they have a bad experience shopping there the first time around...

As a consumer, I can tell you thred up sucks. Bought two things. Actually, gave them another chance after one item. One, pants were ripped (the style rips) but it wasn't said in the description. I hate that style. lol. Two, bought a shirt that was too small. They don't put the measurements in the descriptions. They have a very generic description for their items. If you want measurements, they tell you to go to the manufacturer's website. Who has time for that? And, they only send return labels and refunds when ebay steps in. I'll never shop there again.

It's common knowledge that when someone first signs up the ebay algorithm favors the store. That's why experienced ebayers do the relisting trick. The smaller store has more of a traditional ebay store with auctions. And more of a collectible and home decor, and stuff for kids, with many more categories. The larger store is basically a niche store and has less categories. The pictures white background is a google store thing. As far as the baseball store it's baseball vintage which is always big and evergreen. Plus look at the About pages, Thumbprint has a down to earth bio targeting a specific group. (very clever) You're comparing apples to pineapples.

I read somewhere in the ebay photo requirements that it's actually required to have a white background - aren't sellers technically breaking the rules by using their own background? I agree with you they look better and I'd much prefer the opportunity to make my items stand out, but I don't want to break the rules.

Your videos are great! Do you have any content on what to do with your eBay store when you go on a multiple week vacation and your a one man operation. I currently sell around 17 items a day and don’t want to lose the momentum I’ve built when I won’t be around to pack items. Would it be worth it to pay someone to pack orders while I’m away for a few weeks? Any tips appreciated!

You can put your store on time away mode the days you will be gone you will not sell any items. Or you can extend your handling time the duration of the time your away and at least you will still sell items. If you have a draft bank you can still list items everyday to keep your store active.

I am confused about what background to use now. I have been a seller since 1998 and started a store around 2015. I have always used a solid background, red, blue, black or white depending on the color of the item. Ebay has been advocating for a white background. Google requires a white background. Another long time seller, with a KZbin channel that works closely with eBay also advises for a white background. In your video though, you recommend the non-white gray background and don't recommend the white background. Is this a new trend, stay away from the solid white background?

THredUP does list the items that they have declared our brands they won’t pay out on but what I figured out is if it’s because their listing staff doesn’t know the brands and so if it’s a good condition it will get photographed and put on the website. The software then deems the brand not payable and therefore the cosigner won’t be paid. I went round and round with them on an email saying if you don’t want to do the work on these items… Why are you doing the work. No one really ever answered me… But it makes sense once you figure it out. There are thousands and thousands of unpayable brands. Even their staff cannot keep up with what’s not excepted. And yes I agree that it’s pretty shady.

Just show ebay you are responsible with the lower limits and call them to raise your limits after you have been consistently selling and delivering your packages. They will raise your limits if you can show them you are reasonable with the lower limits you have.

My guess is that the item specifics over-rides (ie N/A, using decimals) is due to whatever cross-listing inhouse program they're using. It looks like TU is using eBay as an additional venue for items they have already listed at their site and items that didn't sell within their TU listing time frame and weren't reclaimed so eBay is getting their leftovers. They already have done the work to list at their site, if they sell a small percentage of those leftovers it helps provide some cash flow, someone is going to have to physically take them out of inventory, the additional manpower to ship vs "donate" is likely fairly negligible. On the other hand they do have overhead to store those unclaimed items. I've also heard many large sellers on eBay have deals for reduced fees and free "invisible" promotions so we wouldn't see promoted listings for them. I do think they could improve that sell-through rate with some of the things you talked about but the cost analysis for the time may not bear it out.

Thredup isn't your average reseller - they are, like you said, a business relying on the country (world?) to be their pickers, with apparently a thousand employees? It is a unique business model, they've been around for several years now and, from the looks of it, their plan isn't working, so they are likely going out of business soon. And you're comparing it to your average reseller ? I don't think it's a useful or appropriate comparison.
