The silicone tape has been around for a number of years. I have a roll of it that my dad bought at a local hardware store probably 6 or 7 years ago that does the same thing. I believe it is mostly used for some plumbing and electrical work commonly. Not dissing the iFixit solution, just noting that it might not be as hard of a solution to find depending on where you live.

I'm with Allison...the removal of physical air vent controls is just dumb and adds no actual value. Some people may not mind it but it's not actually adding value or ease of use for the user in any way. We change the air vent position enough in our vehicle that driving a Rivian (which has maddening digital vent controls) for just a weekend was enough to make us realize we didn't want one. As Allison said, obviously this is very user dependent on what you value, but personally I would never buy a car that didn't have physical vent controls

I too want physical controls for important (see below) functions, but more importantly I want physical controls for things so simple as well. I'm more ok if the electronic control has a manual option as well (door locks, door handles, etc). I keep and drive older vehicles out of economics and reduce unnecessary costs and trash. If I see a car that has a small motor for every vent, and a huge custom screen that is my only control interface it'll be a big nope from me every time. Important in rough order: steering, brakes, acceleration, door handle, door locks, clutch, shifter, start/stop key/button, headlights, gas door, etc...
