I worked on a small 45 cow dairy farm when I was 14 and it was the favorite job I've ever done. It's sad that many small family dairy farms are struggling and closing down at alarming rates.

Very difficult nowadays, it's difficult to run a diary farm that's under 150 cows that's profitable. Ten years ago it may have been easier but not anymore. Thousands have been closing down in the US and Canada

Andre Visser good luck. What you don't really see in the video is how much time cows spend outside. But this is generally the way dairy farming is done across Canada. There are also agricultural fairs all summer where farmers and farm workers can meet with each other and share ideas. But just to let you know, dairy farming in the US is completely different. There are still some small family farms but the majority of their dairy comes from huge factory farms and they get subsidies. That's why the price of milk is so much lower there but it's not enough to keep farms going.

We don't 'hate' on you, we just wonder what the F%&$ is wrong with otherwise normal human beings who support these atrocities and then pretend like dogs, cats and other random wild animals you like are so precious and important. Why? Because we breed cows for torture and death? So I guess it's fine to do the same to dogs right?

It's pretty sad how the producers of the world get persecuted by the consumers. It takes real men and women to be farmers and be compassionate enough to still feed the ignorant children who do nothing but bite the hand that feeds them. The future of the world has and always will be agriculture because food drives life. I do feel for the people who bad mouth the dairy industry because it must be hard to learn about life in your concrete jungle, which really is the same concept as a barn full of cows.

I can't thank you enough for this comment. Farmers of all kinds are some of the hardest working and smartest people around. I'm in the professional veterinary field and I now work with large animals (farm animals) because I couldn't stand small animal owners anymore. Farm owners care so much for their livestock and love them more than a pet owner loves his dog. Not to mention they don't look down on veterinary recommendation. Dog and cat owners see vets as idiots who drive around in fancy cars, have big houses and are just trying to take their money. ANYONE in the veterinary field works their ASSES off for animals because they LOVE them. We make almost as much as McDonald's workers. Farmers are the same; they never take a day off for the majority of their lives just to survive.

Question. What does the vocal minority of '''animal lovers'' think would happen to all the domestic livestock if the whole world turned veggy? Would they just skip merrily through the abandoned wilderness? Also, and this is a question I have never had answered straight, if the whole world went veggy, how on earth would the planet feed itself sustainably and cheaply? Furthermore, how much does veggy/vegan food industry contribute to national trade and income in comparison to the livestock industry, and all its associated industries?
@user-ux7ch5rc3g
@user-ux7ch5rc3g 7 жыл бұрын
No they would naturally decline as they are bred less, as the dairy meat consumption dropped to zero slowly, because it would not happen overnight. If the world went vegan not veggy then this would slowly happen and land used now would be used for vegetables grains fruits etc. Meat farming takes up lots of land, and uses more water than crops, trade and income would still trade and produce income from veggy sources. There would be no large herds of livestock roaming the streets lol, they would be bred less and less as this change happened slowly.big meat food companies starting to get in early, already as they have bought a lot of the vegan veggy food chains already.They now this is getting bigger and are looking ahead. NASTY INDUSTRY, SOONER MEAT DAIRY CLOSES FOR GOOD THE BETTER.

Canadian dairies is a license to print money with the dairy board. That's why its all 3+ generation farmer, nobody can afford a startup dairy with quota prices. I hope Steven harper is successful in shutting this old mans club down with the euro trade deal.
@saisonqwerty
@saisonqwerty 8 жыл бұрын
+TheCDNkindaguy Amen to that! I was thinking having a dairy farm and working for myself would be a nice way to make a living. Just raise the cows, milk them, sell them milk, work at home and homeschool my children. What a nice life. NEW DAIRY FARMER ARE NOT WELCOME. $28000 a cow for the quota fee? Can one cow make enough milk to cover that quota fee before you can start making a little money after buying the cow, feeding it and taking care of it's health? Let's NOT pretend that dairy farmer are some kind of honorable people. What they do is disgusting! Dairy farms are only for those who are born into it and no one else is allowed in. No wonder there are no jobs! Next spring we are buying a "miniature jersey". It's a cow that is only about 3 or 4 feet tall. It's not intimidating, very friendly and gives 2 to 5 gallons a day, just the right amount for a family. After that, I will never buy store bought dairy products again. We plant to breed them an encourage anyone who is interested and has land to get their own mini jersey and stop supping the dairy CARTEL (let's now not call it an honest business where producers have to "earn" their business like any other businessman.)

I for one love milk. I also eat beef, pork, chicken, fish, the occasional rabbit and grasshoppers. The time is fast approaching of outer space horticulture and 3D printing protein (like steaks and pizza). I do not like animal cruelty. I am happy that farmers are there to feed me though. We can still stop animal cruelty by having morally responsible farmers and a constant food supply. It is about respect. The world is all about abundance. Cattle's milk is no exception. More than 70% milk production of a cow's utter is waste. A calf would never consume an utter dry. Unless the cow was suffering malnutrition.

@@calebmanuel17 I think more people are starting to care. You would think if the human mother values her child, that there may be some sort of empathy when they see the distress it causes the mother cow. Female cows are very maternal. So, what's your reaction to a video like "Dairy is Scary" that can be found on youtube.

@@calebmanuel17 Yes, that's the idea, maternal is being motherly caring about ones young, as I said.. and ask any honest farmer and they will tell you the first couple times they try to separate a baby calf from it's mother the mother will pine out in distress for her young, it's a very hard process. there was an example of what I'm talking about in that video if you watched it. Eventually after it has been done to them enough times they give up, it's pretty sad. Caring for offspring is a quality many mammals share.

You seem to have a very good understanding of family yet you tare hundreds of families apart. Cows today produce 10 times the amount a calf would drink yet you still tare calves away from their mothers who care about them just as much as your mom cared about you. The female calves a put into small pins where they cant even play with the other calves. The mothers can hear their babies cries yet are helpless to stop it. Not to mention the bobby calves who are sent away to become veal or simply thrown alive into the trash, the lucky ones may get a shot to the head and die within a few minuets of bleeding on the ground. Also all the "spent" cows who are sent off to slaughter at only 5-6 years of age when her lifespan should be 20 years. At this point many of them are so near death that they have a hard time walking onto the truck and are beaten to get them to move. Many cows are even slaughtered pregnant. These are all industry standards so if you call yourselves "family friendly" maybe you should actually look at the industry you are in.

Lisa Kitty you are one of those city folks who never even been on a farm who sit behind a computer making lies. Canada has standards! they dont tolerate animal abuse. a farmer who wants to make money will keep his cows happy because they produce more milk when theyre happy. I WORK on a dairy farm and let me tell u, the babies dont cry for mom. believe me the mom doesnt care that much. the only times the calves so call "cry" is when they are hungry. Canadian farmers care for their animals. sheesh you ignorant people need to get out of ur damn house for once and go visit some farms. go ahead, visit your local farmers. farming aint always pretty so how about making a farmers life harder. shut up and support your local farmers cuz they produce high quality milk for you consumers.
@lisadacat100
@lisadacat100 9 жыл бұрын
I know how hard farmers work, i have been to many of my local farms and worked at farm animal sanctuaries. The job I have right now is working at a horse boarding facility. "Farming aint always pretty", thats a nice way of saying farmers do bad thing because "they have to". There is no good way to produce milk, or any other animal product. It is harmful for the animals, the environment and the consumer, yes milk is bad for you. Humans are the only animal on earth that has convinced themselves that they need milk to survive. Not just milk, milk from another species. Humans need to drink cows milk just as much as we need elephant milk, lion milk, dog milk or cat milk. Not to mention that the cows are killed when milk production slows down at a fraction of the cow's natural lifespan. Oh and on your dairy farm what do you do with the bobby calves? Do you let them grow up before killing them, kill them right away or sell them to veal. Or is that just one of the "not so pretty" moments on your farm. Oh and for making a farmer's life harder, well it should be and they better get used to it. The dairy industry is dying. The government is the only thing keeping it alive and they are now realizing that there is a better way than animal agriculture.
@Xterminatorwasp
@Xterminatorwasp 9 жыл бұрын
yeah humans are the only species who drink milk past childhood. Yes farmer do need to do things they dont always want to. Farming has been around for a long time and no the industry is not dying. its only growing matter of fact. and just so you know, we actually sell all our bull calves to another farmer who raises just bulls for beef. If you dont like the fact of humans raising cattle for food then im sorry but u gotta re-look at life. incase you didnt know, the world has a food chain and we happen to be on top :D i love my juicy burgers and cup of milk in the morning, dont bother me taking proper care of my cows for their milk. BTW im talking about Canada;s farming. yes in the states the governemnet is subsidizing their farmers to keep em from shutting down. YOU need to google canadas supply and demand. great system actually

Lisa Kitty it's not the same in Canada. There are herd size limits and the quota is per cow. There's no incentive for farmers to kee0 increasing the size of their herd as there is in the US. You have to get it into your head that every country doesn't do things the same way as the US. The US is not the best at everything and in the dairy industry they are far from the best. You use so many feed additives that are banned in the rest of the world.

Jeanine H We don't have a global food shortage. We have distribution and affordability issues, but we have more than enough to go around as it is. In the West 40% of our corn goes to ethanol, a quarter of soy goes to biodiesel (both highly inefficient, environmentally questionable, and government subsidised processes), and we throw 40% of edible food in the garbage (which is often recycled and fed to pigs and cattle thereby making more food). That portion alone from the US could feed another United States and then some without also losing the animal products that can feed millions more. P.S. corn and soy do not have the same nutritional content as the animal products they turn into. We want to nourish people, not just fill bellies.
