Hello am a farmer with a irrigated land enough probably 2 hac Soi have kienyeji cows the ordinary ones which doesn't produce more milk I want to shift to dairy cows soon I want to come up with a suitable plan But am worried about silage making Last year I tried hay but unfortunately iwas using Sudan grass Whenever I feed the cows with that grass they waste alot because they cannot take the stem because it becomes hard so I have a plan of purchasing a fooder cutter I want to prepare the grass just like the silage but am thinking of doing it in a different way Iwant to cut the grass using the machine into small pieces and the alow the sun to dry them and I feed the cows when they are dried and are in small consumables pieces plz I want your recommendations am willing this year to try at least to fed the cows with those grass and next year I will shift to diary cows

Hi. First congratulations as you seem to have a plan towards growth. Unfortunately, giving recommendations without being on the ground is quite difficult. Also we have had people who thought their cows couldn’t produce but with good management didn’t even need to change the herd. With your size of land depending on location, season etc it may be easier to grow different type of fodder but all this would require us to visit your farm, do an audit and give long term recommendations that will not only be sustainable but would also make business sense.
