Daisy is a 6yr old TB mare who had a heavy racing career with 31 races under her belt. She has quite a difficult mouth and draws her tongue back into her mouth which causes a 'snoring' noise. We are trying a series of bits to see if we can help her get comfortable before we take her bitless. Apart from this minor hurdle, she is fabulous, kind and will be up for sale soon :-)

Every horse needs a rider like this.

this is a fantastic thing to watch, thank you kelly, trying to find someone who doesn't think they are the be all of horse training & talk with a split tongue is very hard to find. Keep up the great work & keep it plain & simple. I enjoyed watching & its very useful because here in Australia we have a lot ottts, i for one have had one & he took me to championship hack within 3 years.

I have a thoroughbred who sucks his tongue back something fierce. He is most comfortable in a myler level 3 with hooks (like the bit you are using) just one thing I noticed is that you aren't using the top hooks which is making the bit roll forward onto her tongue (the purpose of the top hooks is to make the bit stand back upright on release of pressure like a Pelham would do). She probably likes the Pelham because it stands back up and releases pressure when the rider releases

I think a lot more people should hear your statement about the flash noseband. so many people just slap it on without knowing what it does or why they are using it.....

She opens her mouth because the bit bothers her, so tying her mouth shut with a noseband is plain cruel.

I got a gorgeous walking horse mare a couple weeks ago and am having trouble finding the right bit for her. She doesn't know how to neck rein bit her previous owners were riding her in a ported curb bit. My goal is to get her to ride nicely in a bitless sidepull Like my other horses bit shes not ready for that yet. I just have a major problem with trying to direct rein with a long shanked curb bit! I'm so worried that I'm pulling on her mouth, I dont want to hurt her or traumatize her more than she has already been🥺

Did this horse end up bitless? I would love to see the difference if so.

All there horses have a lovely layer of fat. There look fabulous for ex racers. It's easier to put the weight on and then work them so they gain muscle. I love you see a chubby thourabred

Lol, one of my racing mares loved her hay bag. They wants to ask if she was in foal in the saddling paddock ! She was very deep in the girth and had quite a rib spring, like this mare has. you have to work them pretty hard to get them type in the belly and if they like to eat they will drop quite quickly, even in racing shape my mare could have walked into a halter class and looked good. She was well-muscled and had some weight. People assume that all horses on the track are skinny, not true and it depends on their muscular build, age, eating habits Etc. on the racetrack most of these horses have tongue ties put on them so they cannot draw their tongues back because it pushes on their soft palate and it cuts off their air which is critical in racing. I'm not saying that changing bits is not a good thing or educating the mouth of the horse. Just for the record I used to cross train my horse has quite a bit on the racetrack. I do a lot of dressage and I helped a friend of mine who is still in racing to help educate the horse's mouths and do what we can to help them to be more comfortable.

I recently bought an OTTB with this exact same mouth behavior. I would love to know if you were able to resolve it, and if so, what worked. Thank you for the great video!

Sucking tongue back up in mouth behind the bit? My gelding does this and I've had the very best luck with the myler mb33 with hooks for training (make sure to use at least top hooks bottom optional) and mb33wl (dressage legal) for showing. I also wrap the arms of the bit with sealtex to soften it up a little. He is the most relaxed and rideable and his mouth stays the quietest in these two bits compared to anything else I've tried

Honestly great video, but anytime there's the slightest amount of foam or head tossing you should definitely keep working on it,but after aggressively throwing the head and foaming at the mouth I'll stick to a hackamore.i love how you talk about the flash nose band,it not the best.love the video awesome to see people's work on horses.you need the right bit for the right horse, any throwing or foaming or any signs of discomfort you need to change your bit! I'm so glad you have soft hands, she's got a good home with you.
