Thanks! I got this reel from my grandpa a few years ago and it started to be a bit rough reeling it in. He passed away recently and so it means a lot to be able to keep on using his old reel.

Just picked one of these up on eBay. Looked rough on the outside but the inside was great. I did have some issues with the anti reverse. I ended up breaking it apart and reassembling the anti reverse three times to get it working. Still not perfect since it takes a second or so for the anti reverse to catch but it’s working. Thanks for the video. It was very helpful.

thx for the video. Bought one of these and the reel was really slow. Opened it up using your tutorial and it's spinning nicely now.

I came to this video because there was a black plastic washer sort of thing on top of the bale, like a cap for the drag adjustment knob. Yours didn;t have it in the video so I guess it's just spare parts now

Thanks for posting. I bought mine in the seventies too. It has not been used for too many years. After I serviced it this morning, I checked the KZbin as curiosity to see if anybody services them. Low and behold it was your channel. So I am subscribed. Mine is GS-13S and even Mike’s reel does not have the schematic. The closest one is GS-13 like the one you showed. It shows some small washers, but mine did not have it. I don’t recall ever having it serviced, so either my model does not have it, or factory (unlikely) did not put those in. #23, 42, and 48. in the schematic of GS-13.

I am not familiar with the "S" version, but factories do make modifications over time and add, change or reconfigure some parts without changing the model name. The Mitchell 300 would be a great example of many versions under the same cover. Thanks for the note - Dennis

Great video. I just got a GS-13X that looks new but is stiff. Probably dried grease like you say. Will clean it up soon with the help of your video. Thanks!

I would bet it is dried grease. Start with a good spray of penetrating oil like WD40 and that will help free up and clean out the old grease - Dennis

Is there is any good reason to prefer Japan made over Korea made for the Daiwa Silver / Gold series? Is all GSXX are silent anti-reverse? Thanks.
@2ndChanceTackle
@2ndChanceTackle 4 жыл бұрын
Not that I am aware of. Same quality. The Korean reels are newer, so maybe that is a part of it. Some design changes with the later models too. In the end, Daiwa moved production of the Silver Series from Japan to Korea when it became too expensive to manufacture them at home. Sound Familiar?

I want to thank you for making this video. I have a GS13 that I bought new in maybe the early eighties, and have started to fish with it again. It never did get used very much and is still as new. I noticed that it is a little stiff from how it used to be so am guessing that it also has some hardened grease. After seeing this, I`m going to clean it this afternoon, and maybe my old SS No. 1 as well. The little one is by far the one that got used the most on their respective Browning Silaflex rods from that era. Caught an 8 pound channel on that little guy one day on four pound line and a chartreuse rooster tail.

You are welcome. Best wishes on the tune up. I am sure it is just the grease, so start with WD40 or another penetrating oil spray to help loosen up the old stuff and then do the lube and oil. Thanks for watching - Dennis

Yes - the engineering was the same. The reels were made in the late 1970s and were the predecessor to the BG series - Great reels - Dennis

I’m doing some work on mine, but the spool where it holds the line keeps popping up. It seems to not be attached to the reel itself

You may have a broken crosswind block if it is not attacked to the reel. The only other option would be a stripped drag adjuster knob. - Best wishes Dennis

Great video Dennis as always! I Was looking at one of these on the great auction site. Just picked up a GS-1 and was wondering if you had one of those in the box you could do a video on? Curious if the gs1 is similar in size and capacity to the 13?
