Great to see you do this reel. I remember my Dad showing it off to me while I was on leave from the Navy. His first new reel other then a Mitchell 300. I have it now minus the handle. I've serviced it and the anti reverse works until I put the rotor on, then it doesn't. I'll get it. Quick note , I've just finished my first reel in a bag. Bought for $3 at flea market with no idea what it was. Turns out a Ocean City City 985. Back together, noisey but it can fish. Thanks for your videos, I watch them all the time.

Thanks for the note and for watching. Glad to hear your first reel in a bag was a success! Best wishes - Dennis

I had exactly the same thing with the anti-reverse. I think I figured it out though. Remove the anti-reverse mechanism (watch the video, around 11:20 mark) and closely inspect the metal "keepers" that hold onto the anti-reverse gear. You have to remove to view from the side angle. One of the keepers on mine was bent a bit. I re-bent it and increased its "grab." These not only align the anti-reverse with the gear, but they also drag and pull the anti-reverse tab so it engages. Also, I removed all grease and oil from the anti-reverse gear so as to increase the "grab." After that, it has not failed again!

That's my favorite reel but I was lucky to get an SS2000 and a Silver 4000. The drag knob is easy to use as well.

Good choices! The SS2000 was the predecessor to the BG series and is a very well made reel. Best wishes - Dennis

Dennis, is there any rhyme or reason to the numbers on these GS Daiwa reels? At least with the Silver Series the numbers went with the size of the reel - small nos. to large nos. went with smal reels to large. It doesn’t seem to be the case with the GS reels. A GS-9 is much larger than a GS-13 for example. It is also interesting that my GS-90 and GS-60SC do not have any anti-reverse clicker like my GS-9 does. The clicker gear under the ratchet is there on both reels but nothing hits it to make the click sound. At first I thought something was missing but it’s not on the schematic. I love these GS reels. I’m up to seven now. - Chris (I guess you answered my question on the nos.)

The GS with the 2 numbers were later models. A GS 60 is the same as the earlier GS 6 etc except it has 3 ball bearings not two. Same as the GS 9 vs a GS 90 or BG 90. The Daiwa 9000 uses the same body as the GS 9 and also has 2 ball bearings. There are some other differences because Daiwa had a lot of different models as you know. The Black Gold 3 ball bearing series were made to compete with the Penn SS series introduced in the mid 80s. But there seems to be a fair amount of interchange between the earlier single digit GS and the silver series. Many seem to use the same body castings. I think the 2 digit GS series were made to distance from the silver series- be more upscale as compared to the earlier GS single digits.

@The Goods The GS 13 became the BG13 which got 3 ball bearings to compete with the Penn SS. All are great reels, Silver series included.

@@armandoreyes1891 Armando, the silver 9000C only has 1 bearing while the GS-9 has two. Everything else you said makes sense. The GS-9 is the only single digit GS that I have. I have a GS-13X so what does the X mean beyond just Xtra. I found out what the SC means after a two digit number. I have a GS-60SC but someone converted mine to a GS-60 AR ratchet instead of that one notch Spool Centering ratchet which I would hate. Thanks for making some sense out of the GS series. I doubt I’ll bet getting any of those early Black/Gold Daiwas. They cost too much and seem to me to just be different in color with a wooden handle knob.

You say people are still interested in these. What would the value be for one in similar condition to the one in the video?
@2ndChanceTackle Жыл бұрын
On average about $30-$75 depending on condition. Some in mint condition could go for over $100

How do you get them to the US?
@seymourwrasse3321 Жыл бұрын
the sad part about these older daiwas is when you need a part, you may be able to find it, after you pay for the over priced , then pay shipping you have more money tied up in the part then you can buy a whole other reel

I don’t think that’s the point of saving classic reels
@2ndChanceTackle Жыл бұрын
It all depends. There comes a point where it is just not economically feasible to "save" the reel and then it is best to let it become a donor reel to help restore others and give them a 2nd Chance - Thanks

I wonder if Scott sees many ugly reels when he's finding these beautiful reels, his equipment looks mostly like it's been barely fished with
@scottgrant2250 Жыл бұрын
Most are covered in dirt and grime and the line is years old. So I wash them down in hot water, remove all line, Wd 40 the exterior and off they go to Dennis! Then magically they get a second chance because of Dennis!!! Surprisingly most reels can regain their luster.
