Interested in books about the architecture and history of the Dakota, Friar Park, and Tittenhurst Park? I've written a bunch about them. You can find all of them on Amazon and elsewhere. Buying my books helps support my research and productions. Thank you! tinyurl.com/DakotaHistoryCardinal

Agreed. Americans don't appreciate history like the Europeans do. It's ashame, really. This is whaaayyyy too modern for me. Cold. Not inviting to me. Some rooms were nice, though. I mean, I didn't hate it necessarily. I just prefer closest to the way it was back in time. When houses had character. They were built for function, lots of storage, large fireplaces, to last far into the future. Strong bones. This apartment would be too modern and plain for me 🤷 No character. I'm glad I am not the only one who feels this way ! 🙂 Those of us who have been to Europe. Those of us who treasure the past. It's the principal of the thing.

The layout is great but I really dislike much of the modern furnishings and the wall to wall carpet in architecture like this. It looks more like a Miami Beach condo than a place at the Dakota. I was salivating thinking about how I’d redo it. It needs at the very least a gorgeous wood floor and oriental rugs, and the modern kitchen has got to go.

Exactly what I thought. Hardwood floors, oriental rugs, one hump camel back sofa brocade or velvet upholstery with matching wing chairs, jewel-like colors, a grand piano, fireplace with oak surround and arts and crafts tiles, somewhere there should be a gilt ornate mirrors or two, floor vases holding rushes or other ornamental grass, and maybe even a small water garden. I'd love it!

It’s amazing to me that people can hold on to the Dakota’s apartments for so long and that units come up for sale so rarely considering the prices. Once you’re in, who wouldn’t want to stay, however! Love the architecture and views, but the way it is decorated is a huge let down. If I had enough money to buy it, I’m sure I would try to bring it back to splendor. ❤ It seems sad that the doorways are blocked off, but understandable with the costs. The monthly upkeep alone! Another great tour! Have you watched any of the videos posted by the designer Garrow Kedigian? He would know exactly how to really turn this jewel of a residence into a masterpiece. The owner who decorated with the soft contemporary style shown did a respectful job, so all this place needs is the right adjustments to bring back its sense of history and vintage beauty. Yes, I would consider this -- and I'm normally the kind of guy who fantasizes about living in a UES building designed by Rosario Candela, LOL! -- with that caveat. Thanks again!

If you look at the floorplan you'll see a servants entrance to the apartment that enters into the kitchen. In the kitchen there is the door going into the servant's quarters. And another door going into the dining room. It appears that it is the staff only that uses the kitchen and the owners probably never enter. The kitchen is designed for efficiency. I've seen this type of setup many times in old homes and apartments. People are stunned that beautiful old homes have such a plain kitchen and that is why. The staff stays either in their room or working in the kitchen creating three meals per day and the occasional dinner party rich people like to host.

The window air conditioners are not that effective to cool down an apartment that size with high ceilings. There are so many hidden problems (electrical, plumbing and fireplace chimneys). The modern furniture is so out of place with the original architectural elements. Many tour buses stop on W. 72 St. to see the Dakota and the Imagine - Strawberry Fields memorial especially on the weekends with hoards of tourists making the area congested. The apartments on the lower floors (floors 2-4) of the building which face CPW offer a great view of the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade.

Well, there is a doorman who opens the cab doors, and an office that will sign for packages. Is that worth it? Hmmm. Okay, there is more. But still .... yeah ... that's a lot of bread.

Sorry -- I know the narrator wants to be positive, but his words do not match the reality of what is there in the living, dining rooms, and the other spaces that have been stripped of all Dakota character. The rooms that retain their original character make the stripped rooms all the more painful to see. But thanks for showing the original floor plans -- very informative -- and the servants' bell box. I would have liked to see the staff room and service elevator and stairs.

This is mid-century modern, not contemporary modern. It looks dated…..they’ve somehow taken the beauty and grandeur of the Dakota and made it look unremarkable in every way.

The designer did an awful job. Such a gorgeous historic space and this is what they came up with? The kitchen is hideous.

How are those ridiculous air conditioners allowed in those beautiful windows?😢

Utterly shocking for what passes as the servant's room, most of the closets are more spacious.

I love the layout, but the furniture is to minimal and modern for the architecture. It deserves antique furniture and Persian rugs and velvet and leather sofas and chairs. I love to watch your productions they are very opulant and informative.

Painting the wood white was ignorant. Modernizing it is too. Keep the damn history intact. Otherwise why even live there ?

Prices are going down in New York, but who wouldn`t want to pay 8 million for no air conditioning and a daily chance to get stabbed to death if you step outside.
