The 60916 cam with 1.65 rockers should make better numbers. As long as it’s a flat top engine with 72cc d-port heads it’s been Dyno proven 405-419hp @5400 and 470 TQ @4100. One Dyno in California and the other at KRE in Tennessee. 👍

The pistons are KB flat tops it’s 10:1 with #13 heads 72cc advertised, they measure a little bigger. The heads had a clean up porting, nothing elaborate. The engine didn’t respond to anything we tried on the dyno. That’s the best power we could make. We were hoping to make 1hp/cubic inch.

@@mkimble21 Maybe the 1.65 rockers would help, but being down 40+ Hp is odd unless you’re at a high elevation? I had the 60916 w/1.65’s, Crower dual springs, 1968 #16 heads, Performer intake w/ 1” open spacer, Holley 750 dp carb, HEI 35° total timing all in by 2200 rpm and 1 3/4” headers. In a 1971 Ventura II with a Hughes GM25 converter, TH350 and 3.70 gears it ran 12.40’s @107+ mph in the 1/4 Killer combo and still pulled 15 hg of vacuum at idle. 👍

@@HeadFlowInc it has 1.65 rockers on it as well. Not sure where the missing power is. I talked to Jeff at KRE about it as well, he was at a loss also he said should make at least 380. It’s essentially stock other than the camshaft, 1.65 rockers, and cleaning up the ports.

Didn’t know that the 366hp RA/III came with cast iron headers,My ‘70 RA/IV crate engine’s headers looked just like those.I can tell by the intake that it’s no RA/IV tho.Still pretty good numbers.

Should be a fun ride in that 70 Goat. Are those stock 13 heads? However, I was confused when you mentioned the stock cast iron "aluminum" intake. (I'm sure it was a misprint...lol) Can't wait for the 70 455 build-up.

354 as tested- what would it have been advertised as having back in the day?
@goldsgarage8236
@goldsgarage8236 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Alex, advertised HP was 350, however it would have 10.5:1 compression in 1970 which would require 100 octane leaded fuel which is no longer available. (Sunoco 260 had 100 octane back in the day) This 400 has about 9.2:1 compression.

Any problems getting the carb tuned? I've heard that Crower cam works best with 10-1 compression,how about timing? Pretty impressive to make 350+ with manifolds

Smaller cams work great on these. POntiacs arent high rpm engines its all about torque at low rpm. THat will be real fun on the street.

Thanks for your comment Gord. Remember John DeLorean? He is known for the back to the future car but he also created the GTO. These engines are very different and have some very nice features. I enjoyed building them. AG

Just thought of another point in response to your comment Gord. The OEM cam was just over .400" lift. When you look at the head ports you can see why. All to make low end torque. AG

I run Rhoads fast bleed lifters in all my Pontiacs. Allows me to give them about 15-20% more lift and duration without sacrificing that bottom end. Will yield you a long and flat torque curve. I carry better than 500 lbs of torque from 3200 to 6000, out of an iron head 400. Makes ‘em crazy! 😂

A lot of money to get no power out of a 400 cube engine. Be better off with a chevy.

Correct Tom, yes we were conservative on the cam but it made good torque and should be a nice street engine. AG
