I bought the dwarf Malaysian coconut from Daleys about 8 months ago and it is thriving. I live in Queensland on the southeast coast below Brisbane. I dug a giant hole and massively wide. I added heaps of organic soil and mixed in of my local soil. Easy to care for a no-fuss coconut palm. I have noticed a few birds in the area have started to strip down the coconut shell and now the fibre under the coconut is exposed. The birds are using the strands coconut fibre to build their nest. This still hasn't harmed the plant but it looks a little strange stripped. I Love the look of the coconut palm and everyone that visits comments on the palm growing from the coconut - looks interesting. Great video thank you!

Thanks for telling us about this. Make sure you let us know if you get some nuts. Great to hear you are having success when you are not purely tropical

Very interesting! I'm in SE QLD as well so sounds promising that our climate may well suit coconuts too.

Actually, we have coconut palms growing by the shoreline down the street - no attention paid to them at all. These palms produce coconuts in abundance every year. They are too tall for me to climb but occasionally I will pick one off the ground but you have to be quick, the locals all know about them.

I am in Melbourne Australia and it is too cold for coconuts to grow here in winter BUT currently I am growing 3 coconuts indoor with the help of grow light, heat mat and humidifier. So far they are growing quite well. The fronds grow about 1cm per day. For people in cold climate, three things you must have to grow coconut successfully are heat, light and humidity. I also build a plastic enclosure around the coconuts to increase the humidity level.

Is it alright to plant a Coconut, for example 30 or 40 feet from your house, is there a recommended distance, to plant Coconut Palm, that should be safe, for the future when fully grown.

Awesome videos-I LOVE your channel-I know you guys are in Kyogle, and you need a specific humidity house for coconuts, but would it be worth giving them a go in Newcastle? We are about 2 hrs drive north of Sydney. We don’t get any frosts, but it can get down to low 10c overnight in winter-I have seen it as low as 7C overnight in the height of winter.

Do you think it’s worth at shot on the Sunshine Coast in Palmwoods? I’ve seen established old ones doing well in Maroochydore which is near the ocean about 15min from us and I’ve also seen one in our town on council land basically growing into the footpath dry as a bone but only seen a hand full of coconuts on that one... we have some nice dense protected areas in our garden too

If others are having success and coconuts are special to you I think it's worth a shot. Getting them established might mean you will lose a few but once they are established they are much more hardy. Good luck

In sub tropical climate like Canary Islands. Most of year winter 20c day and very very worst at night 12c with strong winds at times. Winter lasts jan and feb. Then days 23c upto 35c and nights 19c .. . Can coconuts cope ok? Red volcanic clay like soil.. i dig deep and add sand and picon..

As a former Scottsdale resident I would say no. As you know, the winter nights (and sometimes days) can be really cold with even a blanket of snow during some periods. The summers are too hot and far too arid. Tropical plants just don’t do well there. I can’t tell you how many times I had to replace hibiscus after some mean winter days when a freeze occurred.

You're probably going to get to cold at 7B to grow this palm - I wouldn't think so, what does the temperature get down to there where you live?
