They've replaced it with praise teams. There's nothing like a gospel choir. Thete is no substitute.

It's still there moreso w/n local churches but not as commericalized and marketed like how it was back in the day. A lot of these folks also left the mass choir scene and started their own group ex: Kirk Franklin, Dottie Peoples, etc.. Ricky Dillard, Vincent Bohannen, Chicago Mass choir and a few others are still creating this kind of distinct sound
