Not sure how many people know this but something very similar was done by a popular actress and MP from Bengal. Got married "on foreign land" in a destination wedding, had a reception which was attended by the CM and many other big names from all fields and a year later, she called it off stating that the marriage was never registered in the Indian court and being in a foreign land, is not really a marriage, but a cultural event. The man, probably hurt and scarred for life, apparently moved on, knowing that it won't be worth fighting the legal battle. So it was probably a simpler separation. This story sounds very similar. Not sure who is telling the truth but either way, it is scary that people can get away with such scams and in the end, who hurts and how much, we can only speculate.

I completely understand what you are saying and what you went through. I have been there and now I am strong and independent. I see a lot of comments about people saying she's in the wrong or saying she married this idiot for money and easy life. I completely disagree. People need to understand that in an indian society girls are raised learning their ultimate goal should be to get married which in some ways makes them emotionally, financially dependent on the husband. Which makes it hard to leave or divorce when things go wrong. Although things are changing for the better, but the thought process is still prevalent in some households. We need to teach our daughters to get well educated with the goal to be independent, successful and strong and not marry. Marriage should be for true partnership and not for pressure.
