I know exactly what you mean because I live in the Basque Country and here the ancient Basque language is much more widely spoken. The Basques were never so repressed as the Gaels by the English. Ireland has the same problem, people just don't speak Gaelic though many were taught it at school, opting for English. Is it laziness? As you say, governments can do only so much, it's down to the people and their wish to speak Gaelic. You Gaels(well, I'm half a one) have a strong identity like the Basques and you yourself are a great mentor. There's no easy answer, I fear.

@James Furey At least have some basic understanding of what your talking about if your going to make a comment

@James Furey yes, I am part of clan Drummond, and yes there are others in my heritage, such as Irish, Welsh and English, but I identify with the Scots mostly. I also plan to hopefully learn Welsh and Old English as well. There is some Flemish in there too, as well as some German on my mothers side, but our heritage is overwhelmingly from the isles. As a side note, I'm related to William Brewster, as well as Benjamin Franklin and the Folger family.

As a reconstructionist of our ancient Gallaecian tongue and author of the Old Celtic Dictionary, I respect and honour your revival of our Dal Riada (Dalom Reida) dialect. We need to expand and promote our mother tongue and our Gaeltachts. I raise my pint to you mo charaid.

As someone also from Cowal I completely get the idea of being thought of as a teuchter and Glaswegian at the same time.

Glad to hear of this. I hope one day to go and learn the language and history of my ancestors. I know more French history than Scots but I’m not totally ignorant of it.

We call Irish Gaelic 'Irish' We call Manx Gaelic 'Manx' Why don't we call Scottish Gaelic 'Scottish'?
@GalaicoWarrior3 жыл бұрын
I think because many will confuse it with the Scots language, which is a Germanic tongue.
@rippedtorn23103 жыл бұрын
It was originally called Scots and what we call Scots was called Inglis .
@gachrudgaelach3 жыл бұрын
Apparently a few hundred years ago Gaelic in Scotland was commonly know as Scottish (not Scots) while at the same time in Ireland, what we now call Irish was commonly know as Gaelic.
@wickedone64762 жыл бұрын
@@rippedtorn2310 I'm pretty sure what we currently call Scots was called Lallans then same as it is now.....in Ireland it was called Gaelic until recent decades........in Scotland it was Gàidhlig or Scottish.
