Dam Opening After Years - Dam Opening Spillway Gates - Insane Scenes (DON'T MISS)
Welcome back, everyone. Today, we're witnessing something extraordinary-opening a dam spillway after many years. We’re gonna share some jaw-dropping footage of these giants from across the world, so watch till the end! You'll be witnessing some big powerful splashes of silty water full of giant boulders gushing through the spillways, creating a dramatic scene all around. 🚀💦
Without further ado, let’s delve straight in.
=====================
Jiroft Dam, Iran: Just see how it ejects the horrible spurt of sediment deposit. After 30 years of drought and sediment buildup, the dam in Iran has been reopened, marking a significant moment for the region. The prolonged closure had left the dam unfilled and its valve clogged with mud and silt. Extensive maintenance and cleaning were necessary to restore its functionality. The reopening signifies the end of a lengthy dry period, promising renewed water supply for agriculture and domestic use, and revitalizing the local ecosystem. This event symbolizes resilience and hope for the future of Jiroft's residents.
=========================
Lake Hartwell Dam, USA: The next on our list is the footage from the Lake Hartwell Dam Spillway release back in 2018. The dam, built by the US Army Corps of Engineers in 1962, has an overall capacity of 421 MW. Its spillways were again tested in March 2024. The Hartwell Dam floodgates are typically opened for flood control, maintenance, and/or inspection. The rare occurrence and visual splendor attract many curious onlookers.
==========================
Tarbela Dam, Pakistan: Hearing the loud horrible sirens? Well, that’s the warning to the downstream people living in the Tarbela area of Pakistan. This footage is from one of the giant dams in Pakistan with a generation capacity of over 4,000 Megawatts. This 143 meters high dam produces powerful splashes that you can’t even stand near the waterway. Just see how they’re running away.
=========================
Neelum Jhelum Hydropower Project, Pakistan: The reason for choosing this video is the funniest comments I’ve read in the thread. One comment was: "This is a surprisingly accurate visual representation of how it feels when you've had a cold for days, and your sinus congestion finally clears up!" And another comment was: “Straight after the morning coffee, now let the day begin.” This 969 MW hydropower project is one of a kind in Pakistan.
=========================
Glen Canyon Dam, USA: This is a one-year-old video of the Glen Canyon Dam, a giant helping regulate the Colorado River. This dam, comprising a massive concrete arch-gravity structure on the Colorado River in northern Arizona, stands as a significant feat of engineering and a symbol of modern water management in the American Southwest. Completed in 1966, the 710-foot tall dam was built to create Lake Powell, the second-largest artificial reservoir in the United States, providing essential water storage for the Upper Basin states under the Colorado River Compact. The footage shows officials opening the spillways to help improve the environmental conditions of the Colorado River and move the accumulated sediment downstream to avoid erosion by building beaches on the river.
=================
Types of Spillways:
====================
Ogee Spillway: Shaped like an "S" curve, it smoothly transitions water flow, minimizing turbulence.
Chute Spillway: Allows water to descend a steep slope, often lined with concrete to prevent erosion.
Shaft Spillway: A vertical drop structure, often called a 'morning glory' spillway, funneling water through a shaft.
🌍 Don't miss out on these insane scenes! 🌍

@@SaadIqbalengrplease take the tip. As soon as I heard that dreaded voice I went for the "do not recommend" because I've vowed that's what I'd do. It's always rubbish narration. ....don't know what held me back. "Without further ado, let's dive right in" Next sentence "Before I start the actual video..." Just straight stupid contradiction. That's just the start. For goodness sake, do your research then do the narration yourself. Human is so much better. I am a Navy veteran and retired Army 1SG. My MOS was 52E (prime power production specialist) our parent command was The Corps of Engineers. Upon retiring at Ft. Lewis, WA, actually six months prior to retirement date, I was hired by Detroit Diesel as a field service technician for marinized generators, propulsion engines and very large land-based Gen sets. After seven years I decided to retire for good. After a couple months the corps of engineers contacted me to work on the hydro-powered generator aspects on all the dams in the western US. Doing maintenance on the electrical production side of the dams. By that time I was suffering from Gulf War problems and was unable to accept. Would have been awesome with, again, frequent travel. 😷🤒

A lot of those "spillways" are actually the outlet works, like at Glen Canyon. Spillways typically are not low on the dam, and flow is not driven by high pressures. It spills over some sort of crest.

Fun fact: When a flood gate is opened, you can tell how much the gate is opened by watching how far up the slope the “white water” is from the top. Example, when they first open a flood gate the white water (turbulent water) is all the way at the top. As the gate opens the white water will move down the slope of the ramp. The water that is clear and not white is when laminar flow is reached. It’s a pretty cool thing to watch. Also, the flood gates are used to release large amounts of water and not over speed the turbines which is where the water coming out of the dam that produces electricity.
