Very much appreciated. You are detailed, clear, and organized. Just acquired a free family 80s 420 with almost 3000hrs but very well maintained. Am going thru it and your content is perfect for the refurbishing. Got a kick out of the idler pully bearing replacement, so simple and never considered it before. Looking forward to seeing you build up that damaged pistin shaft with weld then milling it down for repair. Betting that dland will still be good and you won't need to open up the sealed unit.

Thank you so much for your positive feedback, Michael! You have yourself a very neat John Deere garden tractor. Many say the 420 is a very refined version of the JD 400, which is pretty much true. I wish you luck with your refurbishment project and I hope you enjoy every moment, especially since you're doing it yourself. The idler pulleys are most likely manufactured this way due to the bearing life-span. One can say they last 1000-2000 hours and then the pulley could be worn out too...but what happens if the pulley is still in good condition? "We throw away the whole thing and replace it..." I like to repair or save as much as I can, especially if it's a repair under $10 and that's another reason why I removed this the original rivets. The rear lift cylinder has been replaced with a used cylinder that was in good condition. I still have the old one and I might repair it in the future. I would personally part it on my lathe and replace all seals, as they are almost 45 years old now. Thanks again for your engaging comment. I hope you enjoy the rest of this video series. Regards Andreas

Thank you! I try to make each part work the way it should. If I have slop or damage in single parts, that will add up to the whole assembly later on. This takes a lot of time, but it's totally worth it. Thanks again!!

Thanks for leaving this overly positive comment! I source parts locally and on the internet...depending on the project I have in front of myself. Most small parts like bolts, nuts, o-rings, seals & filters are easy to find. I haven't had to much trouble when working on any John Deere garden tractors. There are many parts that can be found online. Regards Andreas

I do believe that p.t.o shaft collar is made from high density nylon. You could machine it from aluminum also.

It is very possible. Aluminum would be a great choice and machining this part wouldn't even be that hard.

I don’t see the link for the 3d printed bearing holder. Would you happen to have it on hand?

That's a great question and you just gave me a great idea for a future video! I've done a little "walk-through" when I received my John Deere 400 garden tractor. You can view this video here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/mqfRe3qbbLiVlaM I will try to do a more detailed video in the near future. Best regards -Andreas

Hi Jerrold, according to Weingartz (www.weingartz.com/assembly-diagram/john-deere-parts-lookup/model-400-hydrostatic-tractor-19-9-hp-k532qs-kohler-engine-pc1475-steering-wheel-gear-tractor-hydrostatic-400/4275-35688-554481) the worm gear is no longer available. This is a part that most JD 300 series tractors have and maybe you can find a good used one! I hope this helps. Regards Andreas
