Damascus steel from staples for a stapler.

I make a blade from stationery staples for a stapler and powder steel using the forge welding method. This time, too, when the blade was etched, there was an air raid alarm, but due to the fact that the missiles hit infrastructural objects, it did not work for me (08/10/2022).

It's partially a mind over matter thing, but it's also the fact that the contact was brief enough that there wasn't enough transfer of heat to actually cause lasting damage.

Two comments. First, that is one the best pieces I have seen you turn out. I love the pattern from the staples. Second, dude, you can’t have any nerve endings left in your hands🤣. I am a mechanic, and there is no way I could brush slag off a piece of white hot metal. Glad to see you are safe and able to still turn out works of art. Hope things settle down soon over there. It's a common thing in blacksmithing, even a silversmith once told me they never really stopped burning themselves. It's all to easy to forget an obscure little detail when you're tired or rushing, like that an angle grinder can get metal hot enough to burn you. Personally if the burn isn't too deep, I just rub it in so it goes straight to secondary mode of healing and doesn't linger.

@@Leadvest I have been grinding on a piece of metal and went to pick it up bare handed many times. It usually gets drop tested really quickly 🤣. As an aircraft sheetmetal mechanic, I work with aluminum a lot. It conducts heat really, really well when grinding or using abrasive cutoff wheels.

As a fellow blacksmith, I can confirm both that we burn ourselves all the damn time, but also that we know the limits of our skin and steel... it's one of those weird things you figure out by experience and accident. Like those people who walk across hot coals.

It's kinda like short-order cooking - you reach a point where if it's not at least a second-degree burn, you barely notice it; I still have most of a total immunity to onion juice, too. 🧅

I can see many things happening, and this guy is very well under control. He can control the oxygen to be starved from the pepper, drill a hole into the can to breathe, and use the right forging pattern, including the fast his flat mechanical hammer to shake those scales off and create a flatter surface. Also, he did not use a pipe wrench but instead used a squared hole leverage device to twist his piece to help it stay straighter. There were too many to list, but his entire process made his confidence as top standing!
