I turn Bearing Balls into a beautiful knife using forge press. This method I used was the Canister Damascus method. thank you for all the support..

I have seen that some people put a small piece of paper inside the mold so that when heating it, it burns and consumes all the oxygen inside, preventing oxide crystals from forming. I honestly don't know if it really works, but I hope someone can confirm if it's true or not.

WRONG!
@Qualicabyss12 күн бұрын
Nope, the paper removes basically no oxygen and more oxygen will replace it quickly. You'd need to heat it in an airtight container and use compressed nitrogen to displace all the oxygen

The "cracks" are due to the material not having melted to a point they would merge together! If you look closely the cracks are following the curvature of the balls. try using a different method to encase the material next time, such as a ceramic crucible.

Mmm, I just love spaghetti and damascus steel bearing balls.

I would have annealed the ball bearings before trying to knead them into one piece of metal to reverse the hardening from quenching they were most probably subjected to.

It cracked because once you compress the sides you have to compress it form top to bottom and keep it hot

took it out of the canister way too early and didn't work it enough for long enough, should have used power press to start with.
@BladeLuxeTV2 ай бұрын
Ok I see, at the time I built my press after the canister process so I only had man power💪

Typically you don’t need to apply a lot of flux really what you can do is apply the flux on the seams where the metal is connecting rather than applying flux on the smooth flat surface which won’t have much of an effect

It’s some kind of acid. It reveals the different alloys of steel when it etches. Different acids give different types of finishes, some people use instant coffee or ferric acid and there’s even products you can buy specifically for etching steel.
