I will let you in on a little secret as a blacksmith. The last cold steel sword you showed us, notice how the pattern of the Damascus was round in along the spine? The round patterns come from forging ball bearings into blades. In fact the Damascus patterns can have different shapes depending on what you start with. Steel cable gives you an almost spiral look, plates give you more flatish lines, and of course ball bearings give you the roundish look. A little more information on how to tell how good the Damascus is. Cable is alright and consistent. Plates can vary a lot, depending on the steel in the plates. But ball bearings are the best. No such thing as a soft bearing.

13:42 - Not always. You can take a legit damascus steel blade and acid treat it so that the pattern comes through brighter with more contrast - a lot of customers prefer that appearance..
@Chiinnature
@Chiinnature 8 жыл бұрын
+William Grace you can, but you can also rub the blade down with sandpaper and remove the acid etched spot, make it silver looking again and shine it with a light on an angle, the pattern is STILL there if the pattern is legit. That is because the steel is sandwiched, no matter how you sand it down, there will still be patterns when you use a light to test it out. Etching is not a problem at all.

As a bladesmith this makes my head hurt. the production for True Damascus steel (wootz) has been lost for centuries. Pattern welded steel what a lot of people refer to Damascus steel is a mixture of two or more steel types folded together with one type having a higher nickel content to it stays shiny while the high carbon steel gets more grey. The most common types of steels used are 1080 and 15n20 or a similar variation. they are forge welded together and folded several times. then etched in ferric chloride to bring out the pattern. On another not Pattern welded steel makes horrible swords you want spring steel such as 5160 or similar for a sword.

As for Japanese style swords it's usually two kinds of steel as well a high carbon steel for the edge and a lower carbon steel that is the rest of the sword. A hammon is created by edge quenching usually with a clay on the steel so that it is not hardened as much. . . . Now there are several other ways to create these swords but this is a lot of misinformation.

There is a difference between Wootz Damascus Steel and Damascus Steel swords. Folded sword, though are not equivalent in quality to Wootz Damascus, are still decent swords, and by today's standards, are the commercially known "Damascus steel sword" that we see advertised. Not legendary quality, but still very decent quality.

+suckmywaffle Well there is a whole lot more to a sword than just the forging techniques Shinwa blades claim a RHC 1090 level. problem is that a properly forged blade is more about how the stresses have been handled, how it was quenched and what type of carbon migration using things like clay. So the answer is for a $150-190 its likely not bad. Its it up to a $3400 Atar hand forged and limited run blade with all the bells and whistles. No, but that at its core is a value judgement.

I have to say there is a difference between damascus steel and regular folded steel. Folded steel merely refers to a refinement process where the blacksmith draws out his billet and then folds it back on it's self as a method of removing impurities in the metal. Damascus steel on the other hand refers to the process of layering different types of steel (usually one higher quality hard steel and then a more mild medium or soft steel) as a method to allow the sword to be durable yet pliable (the reason blades are tempered.) You want a nice hard steel along the blade so that it'll hold an edge but the thing about hard steel is it has a tendency to snap under pressure. A softer steel will flex flex back and forth on impact and is less likely to snap but is not as good at holding an edge. Solution, use both hard and soft steel. This is why swords are quenched (to harden the blade) and then tempered (to soften the rest of the medal again.) Damascus steel just adds to the effect. I could get into fluxing with borax and other blacksmith methods but I fear I have prattled on a bit too much already. If you're still curious about more... This is youtube, look it up! Lol there's a million videos of amateur blacksmiths out there, enjoy. :)

never buy from ebay, just go for some good source and judge by price usually get you a good sword. It's the fact of the world today, price tells you the quality most of the time. any folded steel in the $200 usd range and under are usually just for looks. The functional and abuse-ready ones are usually $500 and up if you want folded steel blades. But to be honest, a mono steel is good enough for real cutting, and they cost much less.

@@Chiinnature I'm new to this, but I know that the best place to buy swords is from reputed stores recommended by more knowledgeable channels like this one or Skallagrim; That said, I have seen reviews of swords that turned out to be pretty good and happen to be on the $50-$100 range...
@Chiinnature
@Chiinnature Жыл бұрын
Yes, kult of athena etc is nice. $50-$100 range that is "good" - sure, but good for what is the question. Reviewers like skallagrim could be professional but once you have so many blades come into your hand or even free given to you, do you think you can really tell which is which and which is really the "good" ones? I have reviewed blades, guns and lights and people start sending a lot of freebies over for review. I can tell you that at that time, you will be numb'd. It's too many to compare. What is good? good for what? did you test it ONCE? or for 2 years non stop using it? Imagine you have 200 blades, will you test that ONE blade all day for 2 years? After the review, maybe its back in the box and then forgotten already.

it is true, but sometimes people do like the look and how you can polish it to enjoy the process too. Not everyone use a sword for cutting, some use it for just enjoying the beauty of it and doing some forms with it. So they will enjoy the pattern work.

what if you sand it off, and dip it in acid? Shouldn't the pattern be visible again? After all these are steel, you can use any abrasive to achieve a mirror finish.

the only difference between real or fake damascus is whether it's actually patterned/folded steel, or if it's a design etched into plain steel. Any steel that has been folded or is made from multiple layers is considered damascus.

The only "Damascus" steel blades I come across are ones where the pattern is so vibrant and clear, it's almost a two-tone blade. Like, you don't even need the flashlight trick to see it, it's visible from several feet away. Didn't see those shown, so I don't know how those compare.
@Chaaaaaaaalie
@Chaaaaaaaalie 7 жыл бұрын
It's a bit hard to follow, but he's saying that if the blade is actually folded (whether or not the pattern is easily seen) that's good. If the blade is mono-steel (not folded) but has a pattern etched into it, that's bad. Also, it is not mentioned in his video, but Damascus steel is an ancient technique that looks like pattern welding, but was arrived at by unknown means, the technique was lost.

I can't speak on eastern sword replicas, but there are plenty of knife makers online that sell "genuine" damascus or pattern-welded steel knives and swords. Though the ones that I have come across were all short (19-28 inches) they were retailed at very reasonable prices (around the £100 mark, which is around $150 I belive). These prices are EXTREMELY low compared to the company-made, multi-produced swords available online. Things that usually run $300-$1300 can be bought, in the form of a handmade, usually-one-of-a-kind shortsword that uses ferric-chloride etched blades (they are used to make the pattern more pronounced, not to fake it on), along with high quality woods, bones, antlers and leathers. In fact, most damascus swords available on etsy retail for around £70-£130 and all seem to have leather sheaths. Could someone explain why this happens?
@Chiinnature
@Chiinnature 9 жыл бұрын
sam williams Like Boke, they produce patterned-blade with heavily etched surface that shows the pattern very nicely on top, with big contrast... those are cheaply made patterns, and usually are just on the surface. If you sand it all down hard with rough sandpaper, and polish it back up to like 5000 grit and buff it again, it will have no more pattern by then. Those are what I call "fake shit"... the real thing can take the sanding-torture and the pattern is still there no matter how much you sand down

Just an FYI...i proved this concept today. After sanding off all the etching, I rubbed my damascus kitchen knife with some vinegar, and low and behold, the pattern all came back. It may not be real wootz or whatever, but it surely is pattern welded, which is what I wanted anyways.

actually ... I would prefer to have it properly hardened with the clay pattern edge showing as well as the pattern folded blade. On the ones that you have shown they were folded to create the pattern. But the finishing steps were left out.... that being the creation of two distinct types of heat treating on all good Japan swords you left out the pattern formed between the softer body of the sword, and the hardened edge. (the part not covered by clay during the heat treat)

I have a sword I picked up at an auction, I noticed when I run my fingernail across the blade you can feel the pattern. Do you think that could be etched or real? Thought I'd ask if you have come across a sword like that. It would take a lot of effort to do the sanding test on it.
@AbrakaDan
@AbrakaDan 8 жыл бұрын
My sword knowledge is limited, as I only own 2 blades, but I'd go as far as saying that the blade is most likely etched. If it was actually folded steel, I doubt they would leave it chunky like that if it was even possible. From my understanding, it'd go through the folding process and then forged to shape. Then they'd sand it smooth and temper it. After this they'd go through an even more extensive process of polishing to give the blade a mirror finish. After all that, IMO, I don't think there would be a chance to feel the layers like that. Then again, if you read some of the comments, It's possible to have it both real and had been etched to define the details. Truly though, I don't see a bladesmith actually wanting to do so. I'm sure you've done some research though since you've posted this comment, so sorry if this is just wasting time haha.

M3D13V4L The point is, katanas are not made to cut tatami, water bottles, or rope, they are weapons, and they are as good as they are as sharp, buy a hundred dollar katana and sharpen it real good, you still get the job done, ie stab an invader right through the chest. Why do you need to cut water bottles or rope with a katana? A lot of the westerners mistake slashing bamboo, etc as a normal routine for katana practitioners, but they are wrong. This act called tameshigiri, bamboo slashing or tatami cutting are only done to test the sharpness and the strength of the sword. That is why if you actually want to practice the way of using the katana, or kendo, you buy a shinai or a bokken, nobody actually practices with a real katana, lol.

Real True Damascus steel is a crucible steel and not folded. True Damascus gets its patterns from large metal crystals forming on the outside of the blade
@corktowncustoms
@corktowncustoms 9 жыл бұрын
Damascus steel has references going back to about 1770. Used primarily in the firearms and cutlery industries for atleast 250yrs now. Damascus steel is bi-metal folded steel. WOOTZ steel is the crucible steel you speak of. Cooled so slowly that it developed crystalline and even micro alloys around those crystalines and when forged out and folded it mixed and created a hard yet flexible blade that just happened to be pretty. Damascus was developed somewhere in Europe in the 1700s and likely got its name because of art and legend of swords in and around Syria (though never made there) that looked similar....but that is speculation. Somewhere along the timeline wootz and Damascus became the same thing and when craftsman began working Damascus steel again on a noticeable scale recently it was all deemed fake. But any steel made Sith two or more dissimilar steels (1080,95/15n20/o-1 etc) and folded over and over to make a super strong yet flexible blade that also happens to be pretty is Damascus steel.... Wootz and Damascus may look similar and may even work similarly but the processes are different. The terms have been corrupted by history and we are simply arguing semantics of two different product given the same name.

True Damascus steel wasn't folded. It was forged from a wootz cakes. The metal impurities and forging techniques aligned the carbide particles. The end result was harder crystals formed on the outside of the blade and the stronger steel on the inside. www.mse.iastate.edu/john-verhoeven/

There isn't such thing as not a lot of money but good quality. LOL! What do you want? What's your budget? $300 and up is something functional meaning you can chop with it. Anything below that is risky.

Thank you mate! I'll just go and take a close look at my blades. Oh! Do you think that for marketing purposes, some genuine damascus producers might use the acid dipping step just to make the pattern and difference in steel grades more apparent, or of it shows really obviously, it has to be some lower level of work? Thanks and good job.
@Chiinnature
@Chiinnature 8 жыл бұрын
+Nicolas Pattee Yes acid etch is a way to make the blade look more "damascus" and it is a common practice for real patterns to be etched just to show their patterns more.

i thought folded steel bades were sandwtched side to side- not back of blade down to edge, so you would only expect to see the layering at the cutting edges where they would have been exposed by sharpening- like if you looked at a jam sandwich from the top, all you would see is a piece of bread.
@Chiinnature
@Chiinnature 9 жыл бұрын
itchytastyurr no that is not true, and totally not how they sandwich the steel. laminated steel like the jade lion sword there, you can still see the patterns clearly because the lamination is done so the EDGE is another layer of steel and not the surface of the blade. you can see the thicker and different layer from the EDGE

Have you purchased anything from Ryan Swords? They seem to be very accomodating to my needs and specifications though! Great ordering experience!

I hope you can help me because I know nothing about good or bad katana brands. Soon I'm gonna buy my first real sharp katana instead of a movie display katana and I want good quality for what I have to spend. I can spend a max of 450 euro for a katana (that's around 550 US dollars). Are Huanuo forge katana's any good? Especially the Huanuo forge Bonsai katana. It's 1095 high carbon hand forged and differentially hardened clay tempered steel so it's very good metal but what about the rest of the materials? It has a blackened iron tsuba. Blackened iron kashira and fuchi. Real black rayskin on the tsuka with japanese silk. It's a full tang with 2 bamboo mekugi's. Btw it's a No-Hi blade which they claim makes a cleaner cut with the right technique. Should I buy this one? Because I love bonsai and katana's so this katana would be perfect for me if it is a good katana for that price (435 euro's which is 535 US dollars) www.katana-samurai-sword.com/uk/bonsai-katana-p-648.html

Damascus steel is when you mix two or more steels together and then you fold it to make the patterns. What you showed was just folded steel swords made with one single type of steel.

John Smith not a scam, but usually battle ready mostly means "functional" sword that you can use to cut and chop without failing, not really for "battle"

Chiinnature I want to buy a katana, but I want a real one, and not only do I want it to be authentic, but strong as well. Where can I get one, and how much is the strongest sword I can find going to cost. Im going for one that isn't for display, but rather for use.
@Chiinnature
@Chiinnature 10 жыл бұрын
Well you can go for a katana from Cold Steel, they are surely stronger than you can imagine. But authentic means.. what? Like a traditional kind of forge method with the Japanese ore? If that's the case, then you need to go for custom forge work. Paul Chen might also offer you good choices too! Honestly, if you want things for USE, go for mono-steel. They are cheaper and also so damn durable and strong

this is thw best video i have seen concerning this subject. what do they use to make the pattern-ink? i have a lot of so called Damascus steel knives and before this it was difficult to tell the difference between real and pattern. thanks! tim
@Chiinnature
@Chiinnature 9 жыл бұрын
Tim Clancy Thanks for watching! They use acid and such to etch the patterns out for some cheaper swords, or even knives, it's a form of art. But then if you want to know if the pattern is real? Sand it down 100%, use the rough sandpaper and sand it to bare metal color, and then polish it back up with sandpaper going from rough to finest grit, up to 2000 or 3000, and t hen buff it to a mirror shine. Now use a flashlight to see if you can see the pattern again. If there is no more pattern inside the metal, your blade is a fake pattern blade for sure. Real pattern don't go away like that

So is the first sword actually real Damascus steel or the modern version of it? I heard the real Damascus process was lost and so the swords would probably cost more then $100-115
@Troublemasta
@Troublemasta 9 жыл бұрын
Brandon Westbrook It's not the process that is lost. The original steel " wootz" steel(well, the iron ore) just doesn't exist anymore. The mine where it came from is lost or emptied, not sure which....also that steel was used by the ottomans.....The process of ancient japanese swordmaking and steelmaking, as far as I know, is still practiced even today.(Tamahagane is katana steel, just put in in the youtube search :D)

this video was very informative though i have a few questions, how would you be able to tell on a black blade that has visible folded steel patterns without using sandpaper ? it'd probably be all about the price range right?
@Chiinnature
@Chiinnature 7 жыл бұрын
a "black" folded steel is still visible, I have blued the folded steel myself too, and even it is black, the pattern will still show when you shine a light on it, just that you need to tilt the blade around to see it. If you paint the sword with paint then now the pattern is gone -- but who will put latex paint over a nice blade? LOL

easy if its before the 1800's its not damascus steel.folded maybe but its hard to know how many folds.1 or two folds will make it look legit but honestly a 5 body sword the best is a bought 13 folds and is super rare and verry expensive because it takes a group of people weeks to make properly.

+evilro3345 Same theory, sand the sword blade down and try to "remove" the pattern with sand paper. Then use a flashlight to see if the pattern is still there when the blade have more more pattern on the surface (kinda silver looking). If you can still see the patterns on bare metal, it's real
