My great grandma was a Wright and after my grandparents passed I found the original land grant signed by the governor. It's not in great condition but fully intact and legible. Took it to the antique roadshow a few years ago. They didn't value it very high but to me it's priceless! Thank you for this video, I love Damascus!!!

I am old remember when the creeper train ran. The diner was a pool hall. Went to school first and second grade in the rock school. Caught a lot of fish by twin rocks she was standing on. Early on when the lake was first built lots of young people would be hanging out and swimming in that lake for the fourth.

I lived near glade spring and Damascus VA for a short while. Beautiful area. I've been in some hollars lol... I used to like driving around all over the place up there. My dad owned some land near the WV VA border so I'd go ride around the coal mining towns too. Spent some time backpacking the AT, Creeper trail and backbone rock.

Rode the Virginia Creeper uphill from Damascus to Whitetop Station, and then back down to Damascus, a couple months ago. Weekends (when the weather is good) can get pretty busy with cyclists that use a shuttle service up from Damascus, and just do the downhill direction on the bike. I chose a weekday so that I wouldn't be contending with all the oncoming downhill traffic while I was ascending. Good exercise, and the scenery along the Creeper is hard to beat - highly recommended.

FYI; as a young lad my family spent many hours trout fishing in feather branch creek, straight branch. The area of what is now Bear Tree Lake was known as Bear Tree gap full of beaver dams in the early 1950's and the US 58 was dirt and muddy, full of potholes

Shane excellent video as usual Melody is sweet as usual. Yall are a perfect match for each other. Nice old school was looking on marketplace and found a old liveable school. I would buy it but I checked on insurance no thanks I would not be able to afford it. But 150k for the building worth every penny. I have a cattrike look at up they are nice and man no comparison to a bike.I think I'm gonna check Damascus out before I get to old but I'll wait till it's not so hot. Having BIG C, heat isn't my friend. ✌ ever find yallselfs near Roanoke or Bedford Virginia let me know.

Yeah, the heat is definitely a factor so I dont blame you, cant pedal fast enough to keep cool. I bet insurance would be insane on those buildings. I hope we make it up your way someday.

@@realappalachia look up cattrike the easiest recumbent bike of all. I'm out of shape and I don't have any problems keeping it at 20 25 miles per hour. And uphill is like walking it's got a bunch of gears like 60+ in different patterns. But they range 1500 4k. Glad I inherited mine
