Dame Joan Sutherland blows up the BBC's microphone with an enormous high D in this live recording of "Let the Bright Seraphim" from Handel's "Samson" in January of 1959 at Covent Garden.

She had the greatest voice I have ever heard. The D at the end was other-worldly beautiful. Bonynge knew what he was doing by guiding her into the bel canto repertoire. If only I had heard her live, as many have stated the recordings don't do the voice justice.

Even better than the verson on "The Art of the PD"! That D is enormous, but has great sweetness as well as clarion brilliance.

From BBC TV? If so, it's Denis Efan (tp), If not, it's (more probably) Harry Dilley (tp) solo trumpet at Covent Garden

The so-called bright seraphim would have done better to use Joan's voice instead of the inferior sound of a trumpet. The cherubic host would have been much happier with her, I'm sure!

This tempo is a little slow for me I think! She could have made this a show stopper. But great diction. I Loved the 50's and 60's for Sutherland.

Could have been a show stopper? She received a ten-minute ovation in 1958.
