i am very much the biggest fan of dame joan. i put her above all others as long as i can listen, this gets me in trouble even with the biggest fans of dame joan. they think i go too far since i think she is so out of this world any comparison is out of the question. i am who i am, i love dame joan so much that not a single day goes by that i do not put her voice singing for me to i phone. i love utube. this women makes me cry for her art of beautiful singing. no one is near her in bel canto.

So much to admire here, but I especially love the encore of Home Sweet Home, when Joan turns to sing to those seated beind the concert platform. The singing here gives us a good sense of just how rich and voluminous her sound was in the natural acoustic of a large concert hall. And the tone is beatifully rich and melifluous. Brava, Joan!

he was a very good accompanist. he accompanies his wife to show off the glory of her voice at its best. if it wasn't for richard, dame joan might have been a great wagnerian soprano. we have enough of those already. dame joan is the only real dramatic coloratura. that's the rarest of voice.

I like to think of their recitals as duo recitals rather than a singer with "just an accompanist." He had every right to enjoy accompanying his own wife with a flourish. It is apparent that she enjoyed it too.

Dame Joan must have had one of the most difficult voices to capture on a recording. Of course it changed over the years and had an extraordinary sumptuous, complex density of tone which was unique in a concert hall with out amplification. I can't hall always feeling opera excerpts don't work so well without the orchestra which was intended. If her voice didn't quite have the ability and accuracy of her younger days I am sure she recognised that herself but still knew what audiences wanted from her. If I had been at this recital I would have enjoyed it, sure there are a few glitches, but Joan delivered the goods and sent audiences home happy, watching the tape and analysing is one thing but experiencing that voice live was very special indeed, no recording ever quite caught it.

All truly great vocal instruments are essentially acoustic instruments. Recording technology can capture the characteristic and even the identity of the voice but not the experience of hearing it. Flagstad, Ponselle, Tebaldi, Melchior, Corelli, Caballe, Anderson, Horne, Warren, Tibbett. Many others. But no more true of anyone than Dame Joan.

This recital requires no apologies whatsoever! It offers a wealth of magnificent singing of the highest caliber, vocally and interpretively. The small flaws such as they are, only serve to humanize a great artist and add immediacy to the experience.

Is this perfect? No... but 4:30 is enough to make me love this as much as anything else. The Mona Lisa is faded, cracked, and worn. But it’s still a masterpiece, and wonderful to look at. If you sit and listen to your elderly grandmother tell stories, is it the same as writing a thrilling roller coaster, or watching a hilarious comedian? No, but it’s priceless. If I could sit in a room and listen to her sing, the thought overwhelms me even if she isn’t in her prime; because it’s who she is and what she could still do at this age. I’m telling you, there is no female opera singer in the world, past or present, that could produce this quality at this age. Period.

I never remember the source of the quote that is it better to hear a singer past their prime than one who never had a prime (or never will), and even in her last concerts and recordings, there are things Sutherland does better than anybody else. Her 1987 Ernani still has pinpoint staccato scales that most singers don't even try. It's not as effortless, but at 50% Sutherland is still better than many, and she's at about 85% even that late in her career.

Thank you for posting this Concert. Perth is the back water of the Australian Music scene but the Concert Hall has top acoustics. We still don't have an Opera House and the substitute"his Majesty's Theatre seats only 1,200',,,,,,mostly with bad viewing angles and dreadful sound. We were lucky with the Concert Hall which has world class acoustics. Watching Richard and Dame Joan is a treat.

Read your own words, sir... You are obviously not a fan of the great Joan Sutherland or you would never say this recital is terrible. If you really admire her, kindly name at least three roles in which She is golden. If you can't, you are not a fan of her's. The diva is 56 yo here. You name one other coloratura ever recorded who maintain her brilliant top notes, perfect trills, staccato and HUGE voice at 56. She sounds at least 20 years younger than 56.

Was she at her best here in 1982? Probably not, but at her worst, she is still better than anyone else. If Bonynge's piano playing was good enough for her it certainly ought to be good enough for everyone else. All these critics should just shut up or go and sing/play it better.

hmm ... well i would say .... perfections is not all about notes and tunes .... its about all of it combined to one, i you just rely on your ears how would you know if she feel guilty or happy or smiling when she sings? and another thing that to me perfect is relative, same as you say a guy handsome or a girl pretty ,.... in this case ppl consider the length of her concert, and all those, i think in such long run she made it beautifully

I love her Venice concert but she was not in her best voice. This is roughly from the same time period and in much better voice, if not in the small charming Venice opera house. She is phenomenal and Bonynge is as good as it gets as far as a singer accompanist. The opening Handel is stupendous. He lower voice has become much richer now.

This is unbelievable. She actually sings the "O Pays..." from Hugenots and "Bel Raggio" nearly as good as she did in 1962! Now that's amazing. Her "Home sweet Home" be one of her best. The fantastic accoustics lets you hear how huge and beautiful her voice remains at age 56!!!

"Fan" says it all - true admiration.appreciation is better than blind fan worship. I appreciate Joan Sutherland a great deal. But even the best... oh what is the point to argue with people who have a shrine, the t-shirt, the commemorative plates... They have no true appreciation of Sutherland's art - just a fan mentality.

I actually admire Sutherland a great deal - but this is dire. Saying that is no disrespect to her memory and musicality. "You name one other coloratura ever recorded who maintain her brilliant top notes, perfect trills, staccato and HUGE voice at 56." Sutherland was one, but not here - bad day, bad husband....

I think she is a great singer also. I am sure she herself was not happy with this. I made MY comment because of people who think this is PERFECTION and cannot distinguish a below par performance. The Internet seems to be full of those who idolise their singers with no critical ear. I do not put YOU into that category by the way. In fact I thought it was probably a little cruel to post this to a wider audience, at least without pointing out that she is not at her best "because..."

I really admire Sutherland; I really do. BUT at times this recital is merely dull and at times she sings badly out of tune (in Tosti's Serenata for example) and most of the times the ornaments, arpeggios etc are sketchy, sometimes hilariously inept. Bonynge is mostly a dreadful accompanist, leaden and off on his own adventure - he really is very bad, Quite the worst accompanist Sutherland could have. Thanks for posting this however. Terrible recital this may be, but thanks for posting....
