This brings tears to my eyes...I started to love opera listening to Joan Sutherland, nobody else in my family would listen to opera. I have nothing else to say, this was years ago but I still feel the loss again
@peteroidtmann30512 жыл бұрын
My fascination with opera also began because of her... The rest of my family doesn't listen to opera. The first opera I heard was a CD on which she and Bergonzi sang La Traviata some 20+ years ago...

Dame Joan described this night in her autobiography stating that she was originally scheduled to sing Rosalinde in the production, but bowed out as she doubted her ability to cope with the staging and her ability to sing the role very well by that time. She was touched by the audiences' reaction to her "despite the fact that I hardly sang at all and it was in my old quaky voice". The way I see it, Dame Joan was truly the greatest soprano in the world until 1989 where she sang her her final Normas...the most demanding role in the repertoire...very well. By 1990, she started to run out of steam. She cut back her schedule dramatically, singing only one recital in August, one run of Les Huguenots in September and October and her final appearance on New Years Eve shown here. In her final speech she said " The old voice is starting to wind down.....I want to leave you while you still have a somewhat pleasant memory of me instead of saying why doesn't the old girl just stop!".

What makes me sad is that we now only have Ms. Horne with us......and even though she no longer performs she is still active as a teacher.

The first time I heard Dame Joan's singing was as a teenager listening to a broadcast of Beatrice di Tenda on WFMT in Chicago. I immediately knew that I had never heard such a beautiful voice. She has remained my favorite since those days in the 60's.

I was a 'Friend' of Covent Garden at the time of her farewell performance and I had two tickets in the orchestra stalls. Unfortunately, an important client needed my attention in Riyadh, so I had to cancel. I gave my tickets to my sister and a family friend. They said that it was one of the most memorable occasions of their lives. They still owe me!

Home, home sweet home, and all that home means or ever shall mean...Joan takes us there and holds us there enraptured by her simple, yet eloquent performance.

The best at anything are always gracious and humble. She was without question the best soprano of the last century. Ruthann Swensen owns that title for this century. I could listen to Joan all day every day. I never met her in person but she comes through as deeply human and epitomizes class and grace with the voice touched by the Divine. She used it as a gift to the world. Thank you DJS! We miss you very much.

Mid pleasures and palaces though we may roam Be it ever so humble, there's no place like home A charm from the sky seems to hallow us there Which, seek through the world, is ne'er met with elsewhere Home, home, sweet, sweet home There's no place like home, oh, there's no place like home An exile from home, splendour dazzles in vain Oh, give me my lowly thatched cottage again The birds singing gayly, that come at my call Give me them and the peace of mind, dearer than all Home, home, sweet, sweet home There's no place like home, oh, there's no place like home I gaze on the moon as I tread the drear wild And feel that my mother now thinks of her child As she looks on that moon from our own cottage door Thro' the woodbine, whose fragrance shall cheer me no more Home, home, sweet, sweet home There's no place like home, oh, there's no place like home How sweet 'tis to sit 'neath a fond father's smile And the caress of a mother to soothe and beguile Let others delight mid new pleasures to roam But give me, oh, give me, the pleasures of home Home, home, sweet, sweet home There's no place like home, oh, there's no place like home To thee I'll return, overburdened with care The heart's dearest solace will smile on me there No more from that cottage again will I roam Be it ever so humble, there's no place like home Home, home, sweet, sweet, home There's no place like home, oh, there's no place like home
