I enjoyed the straight forward review approach, clear , concise and the minimum of waffle. I use the Fuji 100-400 with a 1.4x Teleconvertor when needed and I have no real complaints other than the weight.

Very practical review. Perhaps fortunately, I simply don't need such long legs. However, if you do longer sports, BIF etc, this clearly an excellent, though relatively heavy option. Wonder if, for many, the 200mm+ TCL may have more varied appeal ?

Very nice video of a wonderful lens. If you had tested it with a teleconverter you would have found the problem where it would not focus properly and would hunt. Fujifilm has just released a firmware upgrade (V1.01) for the lens and it can be downloaded. Fujifilm claim to have solved the problem, but I have not read any feedback from users.

I have the 200mm f2 which works great with included 1.4x teleconverter. I did test it with 2x teleconverter but the image quality at f4 was no advantage over a digital crop to the equivalent focal length. I don’t like the click stops on the lens foot of the 200mm f2 which- it stops the lens rotating as freely which is important for my monogimbal. I’m very excited about 500mm but not tried it yet.

I have the 150-600 mm with a XH2s and XH2 and I wonder if it is necessary to get this one because the image quality of the 150-600 is very good and I live in South France where there is plenty of light and the F8 is not a real problem. But it's sure that is a wonderful lens 👍👍

After doing some research, I think that a 500mm F5.6 prime lens is about optimum for a good, small and light lens for wildlife photography that is not horrendously expensive, but is still expensive. I even considered adapting a used Nikon 500mm F5.6 PF lens then heard that this lens was going to be released. I live in the UK and if can be quite dull here so the faster aperture is a bonus. I have the 70-300mm lens with the 1.4X TC and can carry it around all day, the 150-600mm is a beast and is probably too heavy for me. I will probably buy the 500mm F5.6.

Why is it just as large as a full frame 500mm F5.6?

You need the length for the 500mm focal length and the diameter of the front is set by the focal length and the F ratio of 5.6. The lens is basically a modified GF 500mm F5.6. Probably the only opportunity to lighten the lens would be at the back end where reduced diameter components could be used because of the smaller sensor. However, what you have is a high quality, small and light FF equivalent 762mm F5.6 lens that will have a FF focal length of 1067mm F8 with the 1.4C TC.

After using the XF200, I can see how good the sensor can really be, and this lens is the same. Why can't all the small focal range F2 and F2.8 primes _and more_ be up at that quality? There's very stiff competition from the three big full frame brands in terms of IQ. X Mount would give them very stiff competition if there was a whole line of lenses at this quality, and if the autofocus (body and the lenses focus construction) was leading with prowess & innovation. The only way is up. Why get a bigger full frame system when X Mount could be trailblazing.
