Unplayed Piano was released in Ireland on June 17, 2005 and in the UK on June 20, 2005 to coincide with Aung San Suu Kyi's 60th birthday. The song was written for Suu Kyi following a visit by Damien to Burma in July 2004. Proceeds from the sale of the single go to the Burma campaign.

my girlfriend told me about this song, i had never heard of it or Damien Rice. I was floored at how this song just flows into you, wraps around you, fills your senses with sounds of your own emotions. its deeply touching, beautiful, remarkable. It is instantly one of my favorite songs, and I will play it back to back when playing it on my MP3 player. I have a totally different vision of what the "video in my mind" would look like for this song, but of course I knew nothing about the backstory of this song, and my g/f has my heart and soul locked up, so I had pictured her, in my mind, in the video my mind created. Its a song I would think should be in the top 100 songs of All Time, its just that uniquely beautiful. Fan for life...

This song and it’s back story are of historical significance depicting a tragic injustice in Burma I believe it was, an interesting story. Yet still an amazing song. I’m glad it represents a tie for you and your GF as well.

Probably one of the saddest song I have ever heard, but absolutely love, love it. The lyrics are so poetic and simply beautiful. Saw this video when Daw Aung San Suu Kyi was still under house arrest and thought how poignant it was, how painful it was that she was still not released. Then all of a sudden came the news in late 2010 that the military junta had decided to set Daw Suu free. It was utter joy. Thank you Damien for such a beautiful song.

It was a song for charity. My guess is that there is a contract that is forcing it to be for purchase only, and that “streaming” the full quality song is against that contract. Even listen to this version, it is intentionally lower quality. None the less it’s for positive reasons :)

Thank Damien for this beautiful song. I am from Myanmar and support human rights for Rohinga. But I don't hate the lady, Aung San Su Kyi for what she is doing for her people, us now. She is not the manipulator behind Rohinga's case, it was always our country's dictatorship of the Military. She has to take the responsibility for the case when she takes the power. She is keeping doing her best on the democracy movement for her people against the dictator's reign. We believe she respects all religions according to her small actions towards all people.

after i first heard this song i would think of all the pianos i would pass by that were standing alone being unplayed....and sometimes when I was younger at parties I would find a piano at the end of night and play...and it would soothe my soul and I would feel connected to something deep within to make for all the emptiness i would feel from socialising and finding no one I could relate to deeply like on a poetic level. maybe one day ill meet somebody who talks to my soul and can meet the depths within me the depth of the sea.
