Today, we go in depth on one of the easiest ways to learn how to WING! Snow winging -Gwen joins Lucas Arsenault, a Canadian pro kiteboarder and truly an incredible human. Lucas grew up snow kiting in the winter to keep improving all year around. Now, with the evolution of wing foiling, comes a new opportunity to play during the cold winter: Snow Winging. One of the best ways to learn wing handling and be ready for the summer on the lake or the ocean.

Got my first wing this winter, stared on the snowboard. Found ~15-17kt with a 6m wing works well and can get you going about 25km/h with a heavy lean. Holding both hands further to the rear of the wing to get the power to get going (flat/frozen lake). Defiantly need more of a hard base (4" powder max?) or you will just dig down and anchor in, at least with a snowboard. Cant wait for summer now.

Where in Canada is this location. It is fabulous. We wing and kite all winter in Ottawa Canada when the river freezes over.

According to the description it’s not even in Canada! Lol. It’s in Oregon but we have similar spots in Canada but not likely Ontario. I did see a place in Quebec a while back that was similar.

Wings also super fun with ice skates on bare ice. You can go scary fast.

You can also do winging with inline skates (or quad skates or a skateboard or land board). I still have 2 Windskate sails that I bought for my Rollerblades in the early 90s. I should pull them out and make a video. I vaguely remember that one of them needs some sort of repair then I should head off to an empty parking lot on a windy day. I guess if I use my land board or Coyote off-road skates I could just find a nice flat field of grass like a high school football practice field, etc.

Winging on snow with a snowskate without bindings is super fun and feels more like on water than with skis or even with a snowboard. IMHO. But just have fun whatever you do!

I tried a 5m wing on ice skates in almost no breeze and I was still able to cruise! What size wings do you recommend for snow? Any tips for protecting the wing from ski edges?

All depends on the wind but a 5m or 6m is a good size. Smaller wing is easy to keep away form ski edges but less power. Just put the time in with the wing on land before you hit the skis then you will have less potential to catch the edges with the wing! Enjoy!

Sure can! Conditions will be depended. Lots of snow more drag with the skis and snowboard so will need more wind. Hard packed much easier as less drag on skis or snowboard.
