How come Vanguard in USA has a REIT fund but UK vanguards has not? A REIT and Commodity fund is needed for investors to choose in terms of diversification.

And what about a global or US health sector index fund, a short term UK gilt index fund, a short term US Tips fund GBP Hedged. Legal & General does a global healthcare sector index fund, ishares does short term UK gilt etf and short term tips etf GBP Hedged. Plus Vanguard USA target date retirement, lifestrategy funds and some more have much lower fund charges. And Vanguard UK platform doesn't provide the Acc versions of their UK etfs, and at the same time they don't provide automatic reinvestment of dividends, income. Plus you can only buy whole units of their etfs on their own platform. Other platforms allow you to purchase fractions of Vanguard etfs. None of this really makes any sense

The fact that accumulation class is still missing for most of their ETFs on their own platform is a problem that Vanguard has still not answered satisfactorily. It's why I won't take out a SIPP with them and will move my ISA in the near future. There's no reason for this as accumulation is readily available on other brokers.

I think Life Strategy Funds are great for beginners and for that reason it doesn't make sense to add a REIT allocation or anything else as it adds complications in how much is allocated and does it come from the equity or bond portion etc. If you get the point where you want to do that, you're probably better off constructing your own portfolio, even if it's just a 3 fund portfolio - global equity, global bond, REIT.

The gymshark hat has KILLED ME 😂. Agree with you - I hope highest returns vs sales were at the back of their mind. When I first started investing I chose LS80. The defensive quality of the 20% bond allocation was appealing, it was still high risk which suited me as I have a 30 year time horizon, and it was an “off the shelf” product. The home bias put me off and I now just invest every month into FTSE Global All Cap. Still trying to figure out whether my strategy is a bit vanilla/boring (the same global index fund every month etc). Love your videos Damo! In Jan 2021 i started an ISA with Vanguard. Not sure what to invest in i settled on 2 funds, the 100% Equity LifeStrategy and VWRL. Contributing to both equally. I stopped contributing when they hit £10,000 each. The result. As of this date the LifeStrategy is beating VWRL by about £200. Agree with you it probably won’t happen. I imagine every vanguard customer has a list of 4 funds they want. However a global reit and an all commodities fund seems a no brainer to me. I'm always a 100% equities guy. I don't see the point in bonds and gilts but in the next couple of months I'm considering changing all of the money in my funds to cash. If I do, it will be on a variable rate that tracks the base rate minus 0.75 but with no fees... They've already said the base rate is going to be at 4% in February and rising through the year to tackle inflation. I can see stock prices dropping due to more people switching to guaranteed high returns for a couple of year. My plan is to jump back in when interest rates sky rockets. House prices and stocks are going to take a hit. I'd like to know your thoughts 👍🏻

If you are in it for the short/medium term this then makes sense. The long term equities however will out trump cash every time. I did do this with my short term investments, I sold a big chunk of my portfolio last year and now have the money is high interest savings accounts for a guaranteed return. But my long term stuff i.e. pensions, I just moved out of a newish lifestrategy fund and diversified across, north America, europe, some UK and asia 100% low cost equity funds. This is long term stuff so not so concerned over the next couple of bumpy yrs. It will be in there for at least 20yrs

Brilliant video Damo 👍🏻 I hold the 60% bonds fund as a bit of a hedge to my 30 individual company shareholdings that make up my dividend portfolio. I stopped buying this fund in mid April and began again in mid June because the bond market was getting bashed. It turned out to be a good move, unlike many others I make!! Long term I think bonds will perform in the way we all expect from them and they do seem to be coming back in favour recently.
@fredatlas4396

Do you just buy UK shares, if so why not just buy a low cost UK etf like ftse 100 etc that will provide good dividend returns. That would save a lot of money spent on dealing charges and I think be more diversified. Or buy a UK income etf and a global high dividend etf and combine with a bond fund or 2. Say a short term government bond etf & intermediate term government bond etf. Or a barclays bloomberg global bond index eft, combined with short term government bond etf. Say ishares US short term tips etf GBP Hedged. So you could just have 3 or 4 etfs with Fidelity UK for example, and just rebalance once a year. You pay £10 for dealing charges and platform charges capped at just £45 per annum.

But if you are a purest passive investor I guess just buy a low cost ftse all world, ftse dev world or msci world fund etc. But if you want bond and equity exposure lifestrategy makes some sense, no rebalance required, just put your money in every month etc and stay the course long term

Interesting point on REITSs. Us Brits love the idea of a property investment, but there are risks with property as an assest class notably liquidity (look at the Janus Henderson Property fund closure). Also, investment trusts offer leverage, and the closed ended nature of them exposes them to price discount and premiums rather than having a price based on the Net Asset Value of the stock.. Both characteristics add to volatility. Given Vanguards size I don't think this would work. Can you even invest passively in property?

A Bond is debt, I would never invest in Debt, so no Bonds for me. The whole system is Debt based and relies on crisis after crisis to perpetuate the model. What happens when you wind up a rubber band over and over!? When inflation is rampant now and in the future with the adjustments to protectionism and de-globalization, interest rates rise to levels where the Gov' debt is unsustainable and they need to print more money to service their debt = Hyperinflation (50% a month for two or more months).

To your point at 6:42 about Vanguard leading from the front and saying what asset allocation people should use - The FCA wouldn't allow this, asset allocations vary depending on client attitude to risk therefore giving specific fund/stock advice is (unsurprisingly) seen as advice and not guidance. Can't just give out financial advice to unknown individuals without knowing their situation or you open yourself up to a whole world of legal and regulatory problems. - An IFA.
@DamienTalksMoney
@DamienTalksMoney 2 жыл бұрын
I am not saying they should give out financial advice at all. But they have made a decision on the asset allocation one way or the other, I would hope that decision was based around expected returns and not a vote on popularity for one market or another. You cannot avoid the fact that when deciding on an asset allocation within a multi asset portfolio they are making a call. That doesn’t constitute financial advice for an individual but the outcome of that decision does affect individuals, in this case the decision to go with a U.K. lean has lead to underperformance. I would argue deciding an asset allocations based on a vote leans more towards financial advice than constructing an equity position based on a fair market weighting. The user would still get to choose an appropriate fund based on their risk tolerance. But my point is vanguard know more about suitable asset allocation than a novice investor.

I still want to hedge the equity markets but for me I just don't have faith in the Life Strategy funds.

Please could you do a video which outlines which funds to be invested in dependent on goals, e.g what are the best funds for 10, 15 and 20 year investor returns, is VWRL preferable for 10 yrs, or more long term. Similarly, is lifestrategy 80% best for 10 yrs....?

My 60/40 LifeStrategy’s performance is far from exciting and I’ve seen much higher returns from the Global all cap and S&P 500 funds. Who knows what will happen in the future though. When I started investing I thought as I’m getting a bit older (on the wrong side of 40) I ought to have a bond allocation. I’m really interested to know others thoughts on whether it’s sensible to hold bonds, being in your 40’s?
@8G00SE8

The reason bonds have performed badly is that every 6 weeks the BOE devalues them by raising interest rates. You should expect a bond portion of a portfolio to perform bad until next year when they believe they will have tamed inflation and the need to increase rates, once rates have stabilised you could see bonds acting more normal.

I’m 50 and hold 100% equity VUSA I have 1 bond which is a us treasury bond just for curiosity. I will add bonds closer to retirement because the returns are low it’s pointless holding them to for long periods of time. The risk with my strategy is if there’s a big and long fall in the market before I have my bond allocation added might delay my retirement but I’m not worried. The S&P 500 normally recovers in about 2 years after a recession which tends to be every 10 years roughly. I feel the US is pretty safe and 40% of S&P 500’s income is generated outside the USA so it’s pretty diversified. It’s also averaged a 10% return over the last 90 years and never gone bust if it did then no matter where you live that will be the least of your worries.

Life strategy Funds and other balanced funds containing bonds were never intended for a prolonged period of zero interest rates. Low interest rates caused bond valuations to be more than payoff value. Most people did not know they were buying funds containing bonds with ballooned valuations that were destined to go down when those bonds reached maturity. Of course, nobody warned them until it was too late. People that got out in 2021 did OK because they sold at ballooned valuations.

I’m no expert but it strikes me that if you are retired and drawing an income from your investments and have your pension invested in a blended fund of bonds and stocks you then lose some flexibility compared to having the money in separate funds of stocks and bonds. If the stocks are down you then at least have the option sell some bonds that may not have been hit so hard while you wait for stocks to recover.

Hi Damien, I enjoy watching your videos. I'm new to investing in index funds. I have a question; is it possible to cheat with Vanguard a little? It takes 8 days for a buy order to go through. If I did a buy order last week but am finding that the index rate is lower this week; could I cancel my pending order and just choose to place a buy order this week (at a lower rate)?
