The Mekong River is already being put to serious economic use by the Chinese, and now the Lao people are determined to do the same. But can it really pull the nation out of poverty, and at what cost?
Until recently the 'Amazon of Asia', was one of the world's last untouched rivers, but plans for a series of 55 dams in Laos look set to change that. With the majority of the population of Laos living below the poverty line, the government claims that hydropower is the quickest way to raise living standards, anticipating revenue of $80 million a year. Yet as scores of villages are uprooted to make way for the development, traditional subsistence communities are struggling. "We used to rely on nature for our living. Now if we don't buy, we can't eat", complains villager Cham Pha. The new dams also pose a threat to the ecosystem, endangering several species. Weighing up potential development and damage, the Lao people face a tough dilemma: "I'm worried about the environment but I want our village to have electricity".

A complex war from occupying Mekong River is beyond to imagine; Cambodia and Vietnam have held the war for claiming Mekong Delta for many centuries. In fact, Vietnam was only in the North; they migrate more and more to the South where is A Khmer land rich of natural resources until they create most populated resident than local Khmer insidious then in 1949 they cut our land into Vietnam land. That was unfair and hurtful the most for Cambodian younger genetions to realizing about our lost generation.❤🇰🇭❤🇰🇭❤🇰🇭

They did same thing in Somalia, the people who draw the map of the world we know were not righteous or legal, they were men, charged with looking after their own. Empires were built. Wars were wagged. History repeat it self..

Actually Communist Regime is scammed. Here is how: The extreme HIGH PRICES for DAM projects were perpetrated by the crooked Thai Corporations. For Instance, Sayaburi prices started from $1.5B, then $2.5B, then $3.5B heard in 2016. Now by end of 2017, the Thai greedy project manager claimed his company invested 300KMillion Baht (=$9.38B). This is too excessive. A Thai guy said the price increase had something to do with Fish migration BS.. Comparing to Russian Bigger DAM, 2X stronger in energy output; Russian Putin explained their original cost, and the repair of collapsed 6.4Gw Sayano Dam, was $800M paid for a new built in 1980. In 2009, the repair cost was $1.2B. By this Standard, I know the Thai crooked Corporations, backed by the British or Impersonated US Corporations must be their puppetMaster, as they played the same Games on Laos King Oun Kham, by handling Issan to Siam freely without any disclosure or permission of the Laos people. Thai Crooks overcharged Lao pdr against people resources. As far as their excuses saying Laos was poor, their investment would boost her economy, that is just a speculation (Bubbles). Corporations in America always lie to commit Great Sin(fraud). All of these Rush, deceptions, and negligence on the Lao pdr part are dangerous recipe for Collapse and High Debts. Furthermore, they could have highly lent the Laos $$$ to the uneducated PDR from the Laos resources stolen off Laotians overseas.

Dams should be broken and banned henceforth. Else the rivers will all be dead. And humans will be in deep trouble.

The world needs to creat a world court to decide on any project that involve many other countries and the life of many people that depends on the river for there economic with the servial of wildlife and the environment desaturate sould give the organization like the world court that focus on the world environment issue can make decisions is a must and needed to support by all country for the benific of every humandbeing instead only a small corrupted people is a big lost to gain and the consequences is can't be estimated and when is spreading out is spreading like the . Corona virus that involve the whole world not just one small regional that people thinking they can control at beginning . Is ok to do withing your country but when some that run to other countries and your decision makings is effecting the life of other services is a crime is not a friend ly decision so don't believe in any government that making decisions that know it's a wrap to killing people slowly but could testified than that country is not a good country to be with because they are to themselves only and making you be there pupet until you totally so sick that you cannot effort to paid for your own medicine talk about fighting back when you diagnosed with the desease and virus.
