What most people don't know is that Damon Hill has a better win to races contested ratio than Alonso. Now considering that Damon only started racing in F1 in his mid 30's, and faced Michael Schumacher in his prime, spent his last 3 seasons racing uncompetitive cars (Arrows and Jordan), that makes his achievements all the more amazing. Shame Damon wasted years trying to race motorcycles. He should have debuted in the mid 80's in F1 Oh, and he would have outdriven Villenueve in '97 had he stayed

Damon is without doubt an extremely under rated driver , and seeing how he had an absolute legend of a father I can only imagine the pressure to perform. And that he did . He was probably the opposite of his father Graham Hill in the sense he was very camera shy and not comfortable in interviews . What he personified was a very strong sense of sportsmanship and humility that is not entirely common in F1 . He will not be forgotten and neither will Adelaide 94 😂

Damon's WDC was one of the most evocative stories in all of motorsport; the similarities to his and his father Grahams second are astonishing. Both were teammates to the driver universally considered the best. Neither was considered by the pundits to have an abundance of natural talent. Both took over a shattered and demoralized team. Many don't know this but when Graham had his terrible accident, his instrument rating wasn't current and thus the insurance didn't pay off the many claims against the estate. His poor wife Bette had to sell Grahams trophies to keep the family going. Damon grew up in genteel poverty and worked as a motorcycle messenger. He entered F1 at a late age (30s I think) and held his own against greats like Senna and Schumacher. When Damon won that evocative Championship he did more than restore the family fortune. He restored the family honor.

Always liked Damon. Not the greatest driver ever and he knew it. But he fought his way up the hard way following the death of his father (who wasn't insured and so the family were left with very little) and made the very best of his ability. Certainly capable of being very quick, but made too many mistakes to be considered truly top drawer. It was hard to accept that, being a fan! I think my biggest single disappointment in watching F1, other than Mansell in '86, was Hungary '97. Hill was inspired that day and had that one tiny part failed a lap later, he'd have won comfortably. Some say it was all about the great Williams cars and that Hill was just lucky, but neither Coulthard nor Frentzen managed to win more than one race in them. For those of you griping about Hill being the worst of the F1 drivers in the Suzuki, bear in mind that all the others were active F1 drivers. Even Mansell was still racing at the time he did his lap in the GP Masters series. Damon, by comparison, admitted he hadn't been in a race car since his retirement six years before.

As any reasonably well informed fan of Formula One could tell you, Michael Schumacher won his first World Drivers Championship under controversial circumstances. It is well know that Schumacher could easily have walked away from 1994 empty-handed after a collision with his main rival, Damon Hill. But for the sake of getting all the facts straight, let's take a look back to November 13, 1994 and the Australian Grand Prix in Adelaide. The 1994 season had been one of almost unbearable tragedy with the deaths of Roland Ratzenberger and Ayrton Senna at Imola forcing the sport into a panic and bringing about a technical knee-jerk reaction in a desperate attempt to make the cars safer. Much has been written about the way in which the 1994 spec F1 Cars evolved. For the purposes of this article, it is sufficient to say that the single stage removal of electronic driver aids left the cars prone to unpredictable handling at high speed. It is highly likely that this contributed to the deaths of Senna and Ratzenberger as well as a number of other horrendous crashes. It wasn't until the 1995 season that proper measures to improve driver protection and aerodynamic stability were enacted and seemingly every circuit with a high speed corner became a mass of gravel traps and third gear chicanes. Prior to the horrors of the San Marino Grand Prix, the growing rivalry between Senna and the still relatively inexperienced Schumacher was the essential highlight of the Grand Prix weekend. Surprisingly, Schumacher's Benetton B194 was hugely competitive. Senna meanwhile struggled with a weak and unpredictable Williams FW16. The great Brazilian failed to score in the season's first two rounds. Then came Imola... The first race after Senna's untimely demise was Monaco and Schumacher dominated the event. By comparison, Williams' number two and sole entrant Damon Hill crashed into first corner retirement. At this stage of the season, it seemed as though Schumacher could win every race and would be Champion long before the final event of the year in Adelaide. But then Hill and the Williams team staged a remarkable recovery. A fortuitous win in Spain galvanised Damon and his mechanics and as designer Adrian Newey got on top of FW16's problems, Damon put together an impressive string of podiums. Then came the Silverstone fracas, where Hill won his home race and Schumacher saw himself first penalised for overtaking Hill during the parade lap and ultimately disqualified for refusing to serve his penalty. The DQ turned into a two-race ban after Schumacher and Benetton chose to ignore the Silverstone Black Flag and with Hill scoring consistently in the revised FW16B, the championship was game on as the drivers took a sodden grid in Suzuka for one the wettest Japanese Grand Prix's in history. In a two part race, Hill scored a superb victory that not only cemented his position finally as Williams number 1 driver but also reduced his championship deficit to a single point. Amazingly, given the first half of the season, the teams travelled to Australia with both titles still unresolved and Damon Hill as Michael Schumacher's unlikely challenger for the drivers crown. For 36 laps of the Australian Grand Prix, Hill and Schumacher traded fastest laps and sliced through the Adelaide street circuit nose to tail. The rest of the field were the better part of a lap behind when Michael went into the East Terrace corner too deep and skidded off the road, clouting the wall and crippling his Benetton B194. Damon had dropped back briefly while he negotiated a backmarker and did not see Michael hit the wall. The Williams' on-board camera showed Schumacher slithering back onto the track and sensing this might be his only chance to pass the German, Hill went for the inside line... Schumacher returned briefly to the racing line before skewing deep into the apex of the next right hander at exactly the moment that Hill arrived alongside him. The two cars touched and Michael was launched onto to two wheels, into the wall and into retirement. Damon appeared to have escaped with only a left front puncture and as he was miles ahead of anyone else an unscheduled stop to change it would have left him with a relatively easy charge to fifth place and with it his first drivers championship. Sadly for Hill and Williams it was not to be. The impact had buckled the left front upper wishbone of the FW16B and mindful of the risk of sending him back out, given all that had happened to them in 1994, the Williams team instructed Hill to switch off the engine. And just like that, Michael Schumacher was World Champion for the first time. But, for the sake of argument, imagine the situation had unfolded differently. Imagine that after the collision, Damon Hill had been able to continue. He would almost certainly have finished on the podium and therefore won the title instead of Schumacher. The public reaction would probably have been positive. In Britain, it would have been jubilant. Damon would have not only emulated his father in winning the drivers title, he would have done it in eerily similar circumstances to those, which brought Graham Hill his 1968 championship. Back then, Hill Senior had galvanised a Lotus team shell shocked by the tragic death of Jim Clark in a Formula Two race at Hockenheim by winning the title; defeating Jackie Stewart in dramatic style. Michael Schumacher might well have been condemned by the media. Firstly for failing to convert palpable dominance into the title. And secondly, the collision itself might have brought him the sort of reaction and perhaps even punishment he was to suffer in 1997 after his ill-judged collison with another Williams driver and eventual champion, Jaques Villeneuve. 1995 would have started on an entirely different footing. Hill would have been brimming with the confidence of a new champion. Such a boost might have helped him to turn the brilliance of the Williams FW17 into a second title. It's certainly likely that he would have avoided over driving the car, something Damon definitely did in his attempts to erase the memory of his bitter defeat at Adelaide on November 13th 1994. Who knows. We may even have come to talk of the mid- nineties as the "Hill Era"... And how might that have affected Schumi's progression to Ferrari? So much of what he ultimately built there can be traced back to that moment in Adelaide when Michael, backed by Ross Brawn and Rory Byrne, won his first title. It's fanciful of course. But that collision could possibly have been the signal defining moment of Formula One in the 1990s. But for one bent wishbone, it could all have been so different... (As an interesting footnote, had the current points system of 10,8,6,5,4,3,2,1 been in use in the 1994 season, Damon Hill would have won the World Championship by eight points.)

You re right when you mention the 94 defeat consequences on Hill which he took very hardly.. However, your inexplicable hate to a gentleman f1 champion who did it his own way when the whole world was against him, even inside his own team because the old scrooge Williams never respected a driver over his car, even if Damon Hill through whole 92/93 built him that beast of a machine yet to prove fast but unreliable, only through the intensive tests/development/impressive talent of Hill the FW14 was a car for Nigel Mansel to win who later on himself thanked Hill for building him such a winner..then 94 comes with the death of Senna and the whole deal goes down suddenly on Hill shoulders who would have managed to win tittle of 93 if not to reliability and engine /gear probs and surely he is the 94 champion if the FIA did not intentionally neglect punishing schumacher for his hit/run crash against Hill, at that time after Senna , F1 needed new german market to refresh its income and helped to create the schumacher phenomena for that purpose.. after the disappointment of the harsh truth that only Hill new and the people who went through near him felt.. His minus was that he s gentleman, did not know how to cheat to win like those fake gods who managed to play well to become the most successful! His minus is that he s human, sensitive and reacted negatively against all who disappointed him when he deserved there back up, they turned their backs to him, just because he s a nice guy, not the cheater one.. because this world stands by who they believe is stronger to count on and who s stronger than a prof cheat!! However, you neglect the unreliability of the FW16/17 THROUGH 1995/96 still Hill endured all kinds of engine/gear/suspension problems and no one was there really up to the job other than him.. Williams is a loser team, only a king driver can take this shit team to win, look at them now..and since before even when all is going well to win the race the team fails by tactic, pit stop, performance or decisions.. they re not intelligent..so imagine what a hero you must be to make it as champion in such a team and believe me only when you work for Williams and see from inside how ugly the management is you d understand that to win you have to face the enemy from inside more than outside.. when teams like ferrari , they worship the driver and with non ending financial and psychological back they support and fight for him and provide even wins on silver plates.. nothing like that happens in Williams.. You people the mentally blind of you cannot see other then from the outside, the inside means nothing, cos it s too hard to handle, you ve taken life easy and take it on the people who went through the real difficulty to make it a hero, legend like Hill who the history will ever talk about his achievements in so little time, with so little experience and with no back up whatsoever to become a hero not only random champions! The thing that made Williams himself cringe , the old scrooge himself in 1999 after seeing the team falling without him, visits Hill who made a Yamaha the worst f1 car in 1year jump from zero to hero ,even potentially win races and offers Hill his apologies, consideration and gives him a memorial ceremony.. You my friend need a history lesson in f1 from the inside if you really have any really idea on the outside! i won t waste my valuable time on you any longer, before you talk down on heroes again ask yourself for a second who you are and what have you done from the mountains of grace they achieved in no time when you dont even dream of it in your life time!

In another universe Hill won the '94 championship which gave him the confidence and drive to win in '95 and '96 which meant Williams kept him and he beat Jacques again in '97.

What, that f1 divers have no talent? No, they do. As Damon put it, "there was a lot of time to think". In an F1 car, everything is permanently on edge. With the Liana, you can slip up here or there and you'd be fine. Do that in an F1 car, it'd be a lot worse. Think of driving the Liana as a 3rd grade math test. It'll be incredibly easy for anyone to do well in that, from average Joe, to the brightest person on the planet. A formula one car, on he other hand is much much harder, and the compression effects of the easier test (the Liana) fall away.

i guess its the lights..and over the years he must have developed a seriously well adjusted heat conductivity system internally, since things can get extremely hot inside those F1 cockpits!!

There has never been automatic gearboxes. If you mean paddle shifting semi-automatic, then guess what? Ferrari introduced them in 1990. Damon Hill began in F1 *after* paddle shifting had been introduced by all teams. (1992).

You say that but Vettel got 51 proper overtakes in 2012 alone. The biggest amount of overtakes in 2012 for a driver. And that does not include backmarkers or first lap overtakes.

Yes, he was, maybe not the most impressive overtakes but his moves certainly were effective.
