I don’t like our American culture’s views on living with parents and the pressure to achieve so much because I’m 27 and disabled with chronic illnesses so I have to live with my parents and can’t work, and I get judgment for it :( Most people I meet don’t know that I physically can’t live without help so they find out I live with my parents and make comments on it or make judgments without considering that there’s a reason. I feel like there’s too much pressure to be independent and achieve here and that can end up tying in with ableism or discrimination against people who can’t or don’t fit into that mold. However I’ve met a lot of Spanish speakers and they think that living with parents at 30 is normal which has made me question what my culture has taught me is normal and acceptable which I hadn’t done before.

I'm Canadian, however, my parents are from Latin America. In our culture living at home is not a problem (actually preferred) but in Canada living at home at 24 is looked down upon. I had so many friends asking me when I'm going to move out, it's super annoying. I feel like every time I have to justify. If you are not going to pay my rent don't ask! Plenty of us are in the same boat, don't feel the need to justify, genuine people would understand!

My parents are from Europe (France and Germany). My parents left their parents when they were 18. All of my cousins and I all left our parents in our late teens early 20s and ALL of us could not wait to leave. Even if we were handicapped, we would have left. Parents can be such a pain. All they want to do is lecture you day in and day out. This isn't right, that isn't right, so on and so forth like they know it all. We appreciate their advise but many times the decisions that we made for ourselves was better.

Basically the richer the person, the higher the amount of money they need to keep in order to feel secure. It's the idea of rich people hoarding money that they will not use and how unecessary it can be in the grand scheme of things. Of course, having money can get you places, but at some point, I think it holds you back rather than pushing you forward.

Honestly it's never too late to turn back. Maybe do some job shadowing at different jobs that interest you, go to different people's lectures and different kinds of classes for a bit. There are so many options , even if it's taking a gap year or 2 ;) . You can always change courses, find something new you like, drop the courses you're doing or take some time to explore what would be better. Do some research, think about it a bit and try explore by interning/job shadowing or maybe possibly even travelling-but I dont think theres any point in staying in something you dont like, just because you've always been there. That's like eating mac and cheese every night,even if you hate it, just because it's in your fridge. You can always buy new ingredients and make something new :) !

I didn't realise I was creative until I was 27 because I had always been told that I was academic. Realizing our creativity is so much about identity. It’s interesting being born in Canada and being raised by my immigrant Guatemalan parents because I realize how out of touch I am with the “Canadian view” of things. My parents would never have a problem with me or any of my siblings living with them as long as we wanted. We have a very strong sense of family so we always planned to live with our parents and help out with bills and groceries while paying off our student debt. When my Canadian friends realized I didn’t plan to move out for university they told me that I wasn’t living my life to the fullest. I started to feel pressure and question my dreams and if I was just settling or was a bother to my parents until they told me they want me to do whatever makes me happy. My cousins have this “Canadian” perspective as well. Their parents grew up here and went to school here. My cousins are second generation Canadians that don’t speak Spanish and I’m a first generation cause my parents were adults when they came. There’s nothing wrong with that of course but it’s interesting when we get together and talk how differently we think. It’s really fascinating how your environment and language you speak shapes your mentality. Since I always related more to my Guatemalan roots and am fluent in Spanish home life had more of an effect on me.

The GTA is very multicultural and I have never lived in another province so i can't really tell you much about other areas. Racism always exists obviously especially in specific areas.

In your youth, we often get told that we can't do something, and we get afraid to express new creative ideas because we are afraid to get critique from peers/parents. Creativity can be re-learned! Just found this talk and as a french person myself that works an office job in Paris and works her butt off on her art with the little free time she gets to hopefully make a living out of my passion, I thought I might have some insight for y'all. Sorry in advance for the novel! I think people's personalities and upbringing are greater factors of decision-making than your country's culture is. I'm french, and though some people do "take life as it comes" here, I, on the other hand, always want to be 50 steps ahead. I want to plan everything because I get very anxious otherwise. Believe me when I tell you that I would absolutely LOVE to just "go with the flow" and accept that I will never totally have control over my life, but that's just terrifying to me. The "art-appreciative" people here are also fewer than expected for a country which has things like literature and the visual arts so deeply rooted into its cultural core. I can't recall how many times me saying that I want to be an artist has been followed by "But what about your real job?" kind of answers. Hanging around creatives sure makes it seem like the world is very appreciative of art, but truth is, most people here are as business and money-driven as the stereotypical american is. I've written the rest of this comment as I watched the video so if it's not a perfectly crafted essay, that's why. For the "people don't care so much about the process and more about the finished piece of artwork", which is very true, I would also like to add that, to me, that's why it's so important, as a creative, to enjoy what you are doing, while you are doing it; because no matter what the finished result is, you will look at it in a few weeks or even hours and find something that you think could be improved. So, make lots of mistakes and keep a smile on your face! Being judged by random people, lol, if that ain't the reason of my social anxiety ha! Also, if you don't want old ladies or creepy dudes to come to you, pull out your best bitch face, it works like a charm. And if you can wear headphones at the same time, you've got the holy combo. Omg please never stop wearing whatever you want to wear. I do wear very muted colors (I only have two items of clothing that aren't black or blue lol) but I absolutely adore seeing people wearing very expressive clothes and creative hairstyles etc... You people are the highlight of my day. When I was younger I used to really want to dye my hair but my parents would never accept something more than just making the tips of my hair a little lighter, like a blonde-ish color. Now, everytime I think about doing something "a little crazy" (i think the use of the word crazy here shows how the need to appear "serious" is implanted in my brain) I always think about how people won't take me seriously if I do that, because it's different, and people here live by those stupid rules of "if you want to be taken seriously, dress seriously" as if wearing a suit and looking like a penguin makes you more reliable than keeping up with fashion trends? Anyways, that was just a big rant haha Vulnerability is a superpower, yes, and that is why I'm the background character of all the Supermen and Superwomen in my life, haha Seriously though, being yourself in front of others is the best choice you can ever make because guess what, if people don't like who you are, they'll leave before you get attached to them, and if they do like you, they'll stick around and create a nice friendship with you. I am someone that has never been open, and the few times I have has resulted in some traumatic experience that still makes me have panic attacks to this day. I think that people who are confident allow themselves to be vulnerable a little more than people who don't trust themselves, because they can acknowledge the successes they have had in the past and use them to push themselves forward. I always think my successes are the result of a lot of luck and many privileges. This way of thinking can then make you compare yourself to others even more because you think people are achieving more "on their own", when really they just have a different situation. Overall very interesting talk. We're all on our own journey in life that can't be compared to anyone else's, and the best thing you can do is enjoy the ride! I really want to go to Belgium or the Netherlands.. I'm currently studying dutch, French and German but I still feel a lot of pressure. I don't have a main job but I'm a writer and I have already published a book for kids when I was 18.. it's nice that you see that here in Europe people are more respectful and open minded about creative jobs but unfortunately I still feel the pressure that you say you have in America, I guess it depends on the family that is raising you but geez I admire you both so much for chasing your dreams and being so brave to move to a place without knowing the language perfectly or having a lot of people there

i have lived in situations where i really didn't care what people thought about me AT ALL and it's a miserable way to live! when i really don't care it's because i think everyone around me is cruel and horrible, so i don't value their opinions. there isn't much to be inspired by and live for if you don't like or respect anyone. so i really agree with the convo around 19:40. it's good to care what people think, but be passionate enough about your own stuff that there's balance. pursue what inspires you.

I dont think i have ever heard other people voice what i feel inside this accurately before. There is so much pressure nowadays to be "successful" which is always interpreted as more clout or more money more stuff but almost never means more soul, more of love or being content with the small things in life.
