Vietnamese music is based on the normal 12 tone system as well. What you perceive as the in-between notes is just a construct in order to build up tension in the music, sort of like bending the strings in blues.

This right here is possibly one of the strangest looking instruments ive ever seen, people allways talk about the gurdy gurdy and the zither as a strange instrument but look at this, its literally a stick attached to a stringe. But its so strange that i love it!!!!
