You really make me appreciate malls more. Just today I went to visit my local mall , not to shop but to just observe. It makes me think of the life span it has left. I really hope its in no danger of closing because it has been around for a long time. Two of the anchor stores have closed down here as well, A Sears and Dillard's. I saw other small stores that have closed down as well. if it does close down ill be sure to let you know. Keep being awesome Dan Bell, love your photography, film and commentary.

I'm beginning to believe the sound effect pandering has to do with the fact that so many of your videos include sound effects here and there, While there is obviously nothing wrong with that, They're now questioning whether or not the effect was from within the building/location itself or added in post .. I think that can be a reason as well as to why so many questions

florescent lights, especially old and poorly maintained ones, make a godawful buzzing sound. if the bulb struggles to 'light', it's usually amplified, and you might hear a light 'tinking' sound like someone flicking the bulb if it's flickering between on and off. the cause is the ballast being shot to hell, definitely spooky, but completely common. most places in operation replace them every few years or so whenever that happens.

Hey Dan, I really enjoyed this commentary video,,, the original was great too. The mall videos always make me a little sad, how something that was so vital and full of life, has been snuffed out. The lonely wide corredores that were once brimming with activity now only habour echoes of the past. Not too long ago the Mall Santa was set up in the middle of the mall with a long line of overly exuberant kids waiting to give him their Christmas list. That very mall was the center of the universe for so many kids and adults alike and now?

I've never posed a question about sound effects but have often wondered if you add any, particularly in the malls videos. In my opinion your productions are shot and edited extremely well, are very atmospheric and give a deep immersion experience to the viewer. To hear ambient sounds like background music, buzzing lights or dripping water is both fascinating and unexpected at the same time, perhaps because most of your followers haven't been in these abandoned places and so we expect them to be locked, dark and silent. Don't be too harsh on us for being curious. Love your channel Dan! :)

I guess I'm one of those who's commented more than once on your audio design. I hope I'm not one of those who's pissed you off, but if I am, please accept my apology. It's just that I find the craft of your work nearly as interesting as the content, and admire the attention you pay to a film's component most people are only dimly aware of. I'll tread a little more lightly from now on.

I should of clarified this. I'm not really referring to people with legitimate audio questions. Instead I'm referring to those who think the audio is being used to trick them or something so they start trashing the videos. I'm not going to waste my time with those people anymore.

Maybe a bit touchy but I don't know the whole story and how the "sound effect detectives" we're asking because you're right, there's a lot of cynical dicks on KZbin. I love the sound effects in your videos but this video in particular I did wonder if the buzzing was real or added in post, it wasn't that I was questioning the art so to speak, just curious as to the mechanics behind what goes on in an abandoned mall I guess. I also wondered if you turned the lights on or some of the lights on. Any way, great video as always, I liked this one a lot. It is sad to see so much stuff in there going to waste really, I'd love to have that wrap around counter, I could use that in my shop.

+billy mccabe I get your point but what I’m seeing a lot of people using the sound as an excuse to criticize the videos. well Dan..this particular abandoned mall video really touched on my heart strings because it reminds me of our beloved (alive) mall here in Birmingham,Alabama called "Brookwood Mall" and even though it's been somewhat refurbished over the years I still remember how it was in the late 70's through the mid 90's...I miss the way it was! :( I remember our family going to eat at a Mexican restaurant called " El Chico's" and after we ate I begged my parents to take me to the toy store...but dad always made us go to the bookstore first...I usually always bought my favorite comic books there...oh what memories! The "vaporwave" really adds a mood I can't put my finger on...a mixture of calmness and depression of times gone by...I love it ! If your ever in Birmingham please stop by our mall...I hope it's not losing business in these days...It's been about a year since I was there! Keep up the quality work of art man! :)

That was definitely the Long John Silver's jingle and likely that was a Hardee's, but probably started out as a Roy Roger's. So you sweetened^ the audio. I think it adds to the video quite nicely. Enjoyed the commentary for the video. Laughed at the old flip phone poster, had one years ago. That was a nice phone. All that beautiful neon reminds me of my youth. Use to be everywhere in the 80's. Long John Silver's food never really struck a cord with me. It seems very greasy and not terribly tasty. Haven't eaten there in years. *Enhancing the original audio track to draw focus to a particular subject in the video commonly used in comedy to "fill in" laughter from the studio audience, or in this case enhancing the popping and buzzing from the failing fluorescent tubes. And yes, they do make that noise when the tubes and/or ballast fails.
