There is indeed a major rivalry between NZ, Australia and South Africa. That said, it’s had the opportunity to develop for several decades and you need to keep in mind that these teams play each other at least twice a year at a minimum and that’s just Test matches. These guys also face each other in Super Rugby so the level of familiarity is insane.

excuse us, RSA are world champs right now and NZL vs RSA is the biggest international rugby rivalry there is branching from the most iconic and historical rugby world cup final of 1995. AUS vs NZL is big but not as big.

@@lizwikhumalo532 Statically NZ is far above every other team, World Champs is just a title and not a current measure of how good a team is. That's the problem with a tournament held every 4 years that has elimination games within it, things can and do go wrong or counter to that another team can have one amazing game and advance instead. That's what makes these tournaments interesting and exciting, it's not a replacement for a statistical measure of a teams performance over time. It's fairly reasonable to say NZ has a poor track record of turning statistical success in to World Championship wins, it's also fair to say that there hasn't actually been that many World Championship tournaments so the sample size is a bit small to be drawing much from that. I am completely biased as a Kiwi but I'm also equally biased as a maths/statistical thinker, if I were to bet on a team then it would be the All Blacks, I don't and will never do any sports betting though so no issue there anyway. It's better for the sport for as many countries to be able to field equally competitive teams, I actually have little interest in watching our Rugby games as for a good while there we had above 80% win rate over multiple years so the match outcome were almost a forgone conclusion. Winning too much legitimately is boring, that's why I like to see NZ lose against teams like Ireland, not you RSA folks though haha.

Playing first five/fly half is similar to QB your directing the game especially on attack. What makes the good ones great as in NFL is execution. Dan was as cool as they come. Well rounded game could run, pass, tackle and boy that man could kick a rugby ball. The most complete rugby player in my lifetime and there very few names that come close.

His position is the closest you'd get to a quarterback in rugby, the first guy to get the ball at the beginning of a play. His decision making, whether to kick , to pass short or wide, to run, all based on field position and defensive reads (blitz, slide,) these are split second decisions and imprint the game more than any other position. Gotta be able to kick both feet , pass both ways,, tackle powerfully as you line up midfield defensively. The best can run like the wind and kick goals to win games, Dan was the best of the best.

All Blacks and Springboks have a rivalry that goes all the back to 1921. Both teams claiming to be the best in the world. In the early days until the 80s they played each other for 'the rubber' basically the right to call themselves the best team in the world. In the 80s things changed due to their racist system. We refused to play them for political reasons (some players formed their own team and toured over there) After we won the first world cup in 1987 the Springboks (who were not invited to compete) claimed they were in fact the best. Come 91 they still were not allowed to play in the cup, some of their fans even showed up to cup games with various signs explaining they were the 'real world champions' After the fall of apartheid, it was decided South Africa would no only be allowed to compete in the 95 world cup they'd actually host the event. They won the final, defeating the All Blacks in extra time, 15-12. (dubious stories of food poisoned All Blacks are still told in NZ till this day. The All Blacks the best team in the history of rugby took 75 years to defeat the Springboks in a test series on their turf in 1996 with a massive drop goal securing the victory, a drop goal kicked by the #8 (a forward, not known for kicking) Zinzan Brooke. Since the professional era the All Blacks have dominated the rivalry and really watered it down (along with our ever-increasing rivalry with Australia, who up until the 80s were not on the same level) however old fans will always see the green of the Springboks as our main rival.

new zealand had a HUGE rivalry with south africa, they were tough opponents but then apartide happened in s.a and the new zealand public was against it, when s.a came to nz to tour, the games were shut down because we protested and rioted, which is huge for a rugby mad nation that we would stop a game, if your of an older generation you have that south african rivalry still in you. The newer generations feel like australia is the big rivalry because when we were growing up aus was beating the all blacks consistently and weve always had that hate/fear and pure enjoyment of beating australia since then.

Nz all blacks is the best team in the world overall since rugby turned pro....prior to that their main rivals during the amateur era were south africa....in the modern era nz has dominated world rugby with few teams challenging them. Personally i dont think Australia is their biggest rivals.... That still goes to the springboks....even though the Boks record since pro has been abysmal against them its still better than that of Australias....that's not to say the Australians did not produce a golden era during the 90s winning 2 rwc and a few classic Bledsoe cups against nz... But the period was very brief....with rugby union in Australia competing with so many other sports, since the 90s Australian teams have struggled against nz and under performed ...be it winning Rwcs or their yearly bledisloe cups....where as the boks even with their bad runs between rwc have won the main prize equalling nz 3 rwc....as well as winning back to back tests vs nz...any rugby pundit would not call the biggest rivalry in world rugby nz vs Australia...
