Dedicated to the memory of Papa Dale Shaffner of Rossville High School, Rossville, GA. Papa Dale gave 40 years of his life to our wonderful school. He will be buried on Thursday, September 11, 2014 in the National Cemetery in Chattanooga, TN. Our school won numerous band competitions under his 'velvet glove'. He was inducted into the Band Directors Hall of Fame in Georgia. I wish every high school could have a "Papa Dale". Our beloved school ceased to exist in 1989, but the memories we have and the love that was and is a part of Rossville High School will always be. BE ROSSVILLE... a way of life!!!

I lost my Dad this past Monday, January 7th, 2013. I remember crying when I first heard this son while riding in the car with Dad, thinking about this day. I showed this video to my 13 year old son, and cried more than I ever have. This song has a very strong message for fathers and sons. I love you and will miss you Dad!

Thank you for taking the time to post this. My father, who was the concertmaster of the National Symphony (the leader of the band), died 37 years ago today. I am a professional musician myself, and am his living legacy. He did try to be a soldier. When they found out he began his concert violin career at the age of four, they had him play in the Navy Band & Orchestra instead. I live in Colorado, my sister is near St. Paul. It's my perfect song for Dad. So thank you! I love you, Dad! Debbie :)

Dad is nearly 80 now and I see in his eyes that he knows the days grow less and less. He smiles and soldiers on without complaint although he is much smaller now, and he hurts in places never thought of when he was younger. I know my time spent with this wonderful man grows short and I thank God for the days he has given me with him. My father. I love you so much. Your son.

I never appreciated this song as it should be, until my father, and the "Leader of our band" passed away in 1998. My life has truly been a "poor attempt to imitate the man" that was such a giant in my eyes. I love you pop, and I feel you with me every day of my life. I just wish I could have had more time with you, as our relationship was really becoming what it should be when you left this earth. I know I never said "I love you" anywhere near enough, so I try to show how much I learned from, and loved you every day. I just hope that you are proud of what I have become. I love you dad, and I miss you more than anything in this world. You are still the leader of my band.

I'm 73 and have heard the greatest songs every recorded in the'50's, '60s, 70s and 80s etc. All the Beatles, all the Stones and every great band of the last 60 years. An only child alone and wild, a cabinet maker's son His hands were meant for different work And his heart was known to none He left his home and went his lone and solitary way And he gave to me a gift I know I never can repay A quiet man of music denied a simpler fate He tried to be a soldier once, but his music wouldn't wait He earned his love through discipline, a thundering velvet hand His gentle means of sculpting souls took me years to understand The leader of the band is tired and his eyes are growing old But his blood runs through my instrument and his song is in my soul My life has been a poor attempt to imitate the man I'm just a living legacy to the leader of the band My brother's lives were different for they heard another call One went to Chicago and the other to St Paul And I'm in Colorado when I'm not in some hotel Living out this life I've chose and come to know so well I thank you for the music and your stories of the road I thank you for the freedom when it came my time to go I thank you for the kindness and the times when you got tough And papa, I don't think I said I love you near enough The leader of the band is tired and his eyes are growing old But his blood runs through my instrument and his song is in my soul My life has been a poor attempt to imitate the man I'm just a living legacy to the leader of the band I am a living legacy to the leader of the band

My great great grandfather was an orchestra conductor in Denmark in the 1800’s. At the time Denmark and Germany were in constant wars over the border. Fearing my great grandfather (Sibbie) and his brother would be drafted, my GG grandfather sent them to the United States. My great great grandfather instilled music into his sons. Sibbie like his father played the cornet. Sibbie and his brother came to the US through Chicago via Canada. Sibbie got a job and earned enough to buy a cornet. From there he moved south and west as money would allow playing cornet in saloons. He made it to Dodge City Kansas before he decided to marry and settle in Central Kansas where he became a farmer. Sibbie in turn taught his kids music. My grandfather played his dads cornet. When my dad was old enough, he also learned to play the cornet and then the Tuba. When I was old enough, my dad told me this story and I learned the cornet also. My father and mother both instilled me with music my whole life, built on the musical appreciation of my ancestors. Music is in my blood and I have my mother and father to thank for that. Though my grandfather died when I was 5, he knew that I would one day play the cornet. He told my dad that I would one day get my great grandfathers cornet. Sadly it was taken out of the family line. When I hear this song, I think of the journey my family took for me to be here. Had it not been for music the journey would not have been what it was. In turn, when my son was old enough, he too learned to play the cornet. Music has always been my thing. It’s in my blood. It was passed down to me from my Danish ancestors.

My father died 3yrs. ago, and there were times when iam not his avid "fan".I was born and raised in Tondo, near the Tondo Market (Pritil). He was hooked in gambling, but never in alcohol or drugs. In short ,he raised us through gambling operations in Tondo. Only recently i realized how "tough" my father was notwithstanding the pressure from the "boss" and from corrupt police officials. Although he raised thru this means, i must be proud of my father .
