Dan is a true one of the best hunters in the i industry ! Ive learned more from him than any other "big name" in the industry. He hunts real deer in real situations , not highly managed low pressure deer big difference so his knowledge will take u a long way!

Dan is one of those few hunters who has combined a high intellect, infinite curiosity, desire to succeed, with tremendous time commitment. After decades putting data in his mental computer, he now just GETS IT. He sees things and senses things in the environment/habitat that simply will escape the vast majority of hunters, no matter how many of these videos we watch. He's a great teacher, but IMO this is one of those things that almost can't be taught. Yes, the concepts are understandable enough, but actually applying them to kill more and more mature deer is another thing altogether. Because when we go out there to analyze and interpret, we don't have Dan Infalt with us, and all the lessons in the world can't make us SEE the things he sees. That is a great statement. I will say as someone who has spent entirely too much time in the woods if you listen to his words he explains why he think the way he does. Problem is you don't internalize it as much until you already kind of know what he is saying.

I’ve watched a lot of your videos and I’ve been applying it down here in North Carolina. Hunting in the south east is just hard in general....Small tracts of land, legal baiting, thick woods and cutovers, ample amount of bedding in a given place. I grew up hunting swamps and low grounds all my life and when I made the decision to do something different and start getting away from bait piles, scouting more and hunting like this the best I can with the tracts of land I have available to hunt the more deer I’ve seen and after a year of learning these tactics i actually killed a really nice 8 pointer in the swamp that I hunt where I used to hardly see a mature buck during daylight in person. The three biggest things I’ve learned using your tactics and applying them here down south, is (1.) you really learn that a lot of hunters have lost the true meaning of being a “woodsmen” over the recent decades due to many reasons I’m sure you’ll agree on. (2) as a hunter you really find out how well do you know your game that you’re chasing and learn to respect it so much more. (3.) the principals of how deer move and live stay the same, it’s the habitat that changes and you have to adapt and learn what works for the habitat you’re in. Here in the south you can beat your head in the wall trying to figure it out but once you do, a lot of what your saying makes so much more sense once you’re able to take the time to learn to apply. I’ve just had to keep telling myself the principals remain the same. Whether you’re in the south or out north west.....I’ve learned more in the past 2 years transitioning to this style of hunting than most of my life just hunting over a corn pile or ag field. He is right about the close to road swampy area where most ppl won't go I have a public land spot and I did see them bedding down just outside the flooded wet section and not to far from it was the heavy cover n not to far was a short hill sort of like a bluff it wasn't high but it def dropped off then it led to the swamp I sprayed some doe estrus on some saplings near by n next thing I knew the rubs emerged but I basically did all the work just for another hunter to come a day i didn't and kill the mature buck iyou was hunting I'm new to hunting 2 years but learning more n more

ive noticed with full moons they just run all night long and you dont see much aside from young deer if you end up seeing 3 yr olds plus its just before last light. id say even mid day between 10 and 2 but more so during the rut pre rut time period but where i am theres just so many acorns all over they really dont need to move from their bedding areas throughout the day so basically last half hour is when your gonna see em around here in most areas

Yeah I need to spend more time scouting. I'm also a risk taker though. I love to hail Mary a spot I've never even been too. Those big old thick racked deer always are in the weirdest places man. Biggest buck i ever seen was when I was duck hunting with my dad. Boat access is underrated for big bucks. You can get in quiet and fast. Not disturbing the woods with boots on the ground. I think the biggest bucks are in the swamps and marshes. Swamp donkeys. Pushed out of the timber and into the swamp. They don't mind though, not as many trees around to get killed from. Those cattails and reeds sure look like a great place to hide a thick old rack too.

Then there are guys that do both, like John Eberhart. I like both guys, but I think John is a little more thorough and precise in his preparation and execution. Dan is a little like a bull in a China shop; just heading into the woods, day after day, boogering up one piece of ground after another. It's a good thing for him he is as mobile as he is. It's probably not so good for the guys who hunt near where he does though! lol

Good interview but....... younger bucks learn about the best big buck bedding areas by hanging around the big guy most of the year... they learn the scrape areas too. Then the rut starts and many of the smaller bucks are run off.

I hunt like this a lot and have killed some very nice Bucks. But I have had a few Old Bucks actually acclimate to me meaning they did not spook out and leave the area they were bedding in. I had a huge Buck come in one night, I could not take the 15 yard shot as all I had was his horns and head so I opted to move to the other side of where he passed and I would have a shot. Hunted the next evening there. He was a no show. I smoke cigarettes and had dropped a couple butts accidentally from the tree I was in. I intended on picking them up when I left. I forgot. The next afternoon as was really pushing it and went to get in the same tree. As I approached Mr. Big 11 pointer, the Buck I had seen two evenings before was bedded right at the bottom of the tree that had my Stand in it and yep, he was laying right on top of those Cigarette butts from the night before! The tree was butted up next to water with thick stuff to the north. So to say all bucks will leave when they know you have been there is not so. A lot will but I have seen many that do not. Not a kick ass Bedding area. Not always.

He patterned you, in my opinion. I spooked the biggest buck I have ever seen. The next morning I tried sneaking in the same spot well before sunrise thinking I will get in there before he beds and this was on November 3. He was already beded about twenty yards from the tree I was in the day before and just took off breaking branches and blowing through his nose the whole time. So what I would of done differently instead of taking the trail I took I would have taken the trail he came in on the day before and set up looking at tree I was in yesterday.

Ok i have a question for ya . so the bucks normally bed 1\3 from the top . He likes the wind coming over his back and the thermals coming up to him . Do you put your treestand about 150 yards away on the trail that leads to the bed ? but off set the treestand so hopefully he wont wind ya .

I study and try to predict wind and thermal currents and look at the trails coming out of the bedding and plan my kill at the 1st spot where the deer can't smell, see. or hear you. You want to be as close as possible without getting busted.

Just curious, how do you guys find your way back to the truck in the dark from these deep woods spots? I hunt mostly in Northern Mi, where cell service is at a minimum, so I normally throw up glow tacks on my way in, or ribbon. But it can be real bear doing this every time, especially when I still get lost using those markers! I am assuming you use GPS unit? and same goes for entering the woods in the early morning... unless you have a specific tree already marked, how do you find a tree in the pitch dark? and know that, that tree allows for good shooting access/cover/etc.. - just some issues I have found with being mobile in the deep woods. Especially being mobile for the morning hunts. I actually hang 8-10 permanent stands each year for my morning hunts. I will hunt each stand 1.. maybe 2 times per year.

Learn how to use a compass. Know the azimuth to and from your stand location. Get a good tritium compass and a back up little liquid filled button compass stashed in your gear. Do not rely on a cell phone for anything

I always used a compass, in areas new to me, or really remote I took a paper map... In the mornings I generally go to known spots I have scouted prior, Just got upgraded to a smart phone... I do believe some of these map app's everyone is using will help me if I can figure out how to use them.

So to me he is probably the smartest hunter that I have ever seen;but every time I see him scouting and finding deer beds he never seems to scare a deer out of them. Sometimes when I scout a different spot I will chase deer out of there beds. What I understood was that deer spend most of their lives in beds.
