It's Babcock and Holland. Babs admitted he DOESN'T know how to use an enforcing type player. And Holland? He wont sign any "because we need more goal scoring"... When all our goal scorers get hurt by other teams goons/dirty bastards... I mean look at Matt Cooke (Dirtiest bastard I have heard of, behind Avery), he will NOT attack a teams players that has enforcers, yet, on a Euro-type/non fighters-type team (Like the Red Wings), he goes out of his way to hurt people. He hit Kronwall on the knee, and NO ONE on ice did anything about it, other than get in his face, scream, and shove, no redemption, they let it slide, if Kocur... Probert... or McCarty even had seen something like that... It was fist city for Cooke.

Not hopeless, not weak (minus these damn injuries), and not soft. @cbysdad

I know this was a long time ago, but here are my thoughts. In that era, certain players will go after anyone whom they believe took liberties with their captain or star player. I don't believe Keczmer took a cheap shot....Yzerman tried to duck the hit and his move resulted in an elbow to the head. Definitely a penalty, but it wasn't a cheap shot. Darren McCarty knew his role....and one facet of his role was to protect the stars and/or captain. In this case, he couldn't protect his captain, but he was going to exact revenge. Yzerman, being the captain, wasn't going to sit back while his teammate defended him. It was the culture of the game. Regardless of what any of his teammates did, the captain has to stand up for himself. And that's what was going on...Detroit wanted to send the message that no one takes a shot at Stevie Y, our captain. The biggest factor in all of this was the scoreboard. Dallas was leading 5-1 at Joe Louis Arena when it all started. Winning the game was a lost cause for Detroit, so they concentrated on another agenda. When Keczmer hit Yzerman...and it was a close game, the initial retaliation would have happened, but that would have been the end of it......

At this stage of his career, Yzerman was playing a fantastic all-around game that frustrated the hell out of opposing players. Dirty, but probably inadvertent, hit by Keczmer. Loved seeing Stevie not let it go and drop the gloves later.

I wish the red wings had sill had Probert at this point. He got in trouble during the off-season his contract was up and they let him walk to Chicago.

Yzerman was my guy.. but honestly... DMac..... he honestly was the best sportsman all round first on last off the ice, loved his fans... did everything for charity... had a hard ending to his career but hes doing great now. I miss this "Brand" of hockey. It will always be the best.

True, but McCarty didn't clock him in the temple like Bertuzzi did. From what I saw, it didn't look like McCarty drove his head into the ice like Bertuzzi.

This would be the perfect game to try and teach someone about the "unspoken" codes. Kind of sucks that they were trailing the whole game, but that almost the point more poignant. Considering there's no saving the game earning your physical respect seems fair.

You hit Steve like that, you better be prepared to answer the fucking bell. If you don’t, you better expect 25 and 26 to unload on your team.

Kocur, McCarty, they're like fuck ya'll , you shoulda left Stevie alone!! The NHL sucks now, too many teams have diluted the talent pool, Gretzky, Lemieux, Yzerman, Hull, and the likes consistently amassed more points in one season than Crosby, Ovechkin do in nearly two full seasons!!

Dallas and Vancouver, especially Cooke and Keczmer, take a good look at what respect is in the NHL, at least what it used to be. There was an unsaid agreement between the Avs and Red Wings to never talk to, much less touch certain players, mainly the stars, unless you have earned the privelage to do so. No one ever dared to lay a finger on Sakic and Yzerman, much less chirp them, which would only give them fuel to make great plays. If you touch them, you should fear for your NHL career. This was back in the great days when teams were allowed to stick up for their stars. Even though I hate the Wings as a long time Avs fan, the fans of both teams, myself included, have at least enough respect to aknowledge these facts and the greatness of players on both teams, such as #19.
