When all our goal scorers get hurt by other teams goons/dirty bastards... I mean look at Matt Cooke (Dirtiest bastard I have heard of, behind Avery), he will NOT attack a teams players that has enforcers, yet, on a Euro-type/non fighters-type team (Like the Red Wings), he goes out of his way to hurt people. He hit Kronwall on the knee, and NO ONE on ice did anything about it, other than get in his face, scream, and shove, no redemption, they let it slide, if Kocur... @cbysdad8 жыл бұрын
I know this was a long time ago, but here are my thoughts. In that era, certain players will go after anyone whom they believe took liberties with their captain or star player. I don't believe Keczmer took a cheap shot....Yzerman tried to duck the hit and his move resulted in an elbow to the head. Definitely a penalty, but it wasn't a cheap shot. Darren McCarty knew his role....and one facet of his role was to protect the stars and/or captain. In this case, he couldn't protect his captain, but he was going to exact revenge. Yzerman, being the captain, wasn't going to sit back while his teammate defended him. It was the culture of the game. Regardless of what any of his teammates did, the captain has to stand up for himself. And that's what was going on...Detroit wanted to send the message that no one takes a shot at Stevie Y, our captain. The biggest factor in all of this was the scoreboard. Dallas was leading 5-1 at Joe Louis Arena when it all started. Winning the game was a lost cause for Detroit, so they concentrated on another agenda. When Keczmer hit Yzerman...and it was a close game, the initial retaliation would have happened, but that would have been the end of it......

Dallas and Vancouver, especially Cooke and Keczmer, take a good look at what respect is in the NHL, at least what it used to be. There was an unsaid agreement between the Avs and Red Wings to never talk to, much less touch certain players, mainly the stars, unless you have earned the privelage to do so. No one ever dared to lay a finger on Sakic and Yzerman, much less chirp them, which would only give them fuel to make great plays. If you touch them, you should fear for your NHL career. This was back in the great days when teams were allowed to stick up for their stars. Even though I hate the Wings as a long time Avs fan, the fans of both teams, myself included, have at least enough respect to aknowledge these facts and the greatness of players on both teams, such as #19.
