Dan McCafferty, Founding Nazareth Singer, Dead at 76
McCafferty was known for his powerful vocals on such hits as "Hair of the Dog" and "Love Hurts"
Dan McCafferty, the founding and longtime lead singer of classic rock band Nazareth, has passed away at age 76. The sad news was shared by Nazareth bassist Pete Agnew.
“This is the saddest announcement I ever had to make,” wrote Agnew. “Maryann and the family have lost a wonderful loving husband and father, I have lost my best friend and the world has lost one of the greatest singers who ever lived. Too upset to say anything more at this time.
Nazareth are best known for their hits “Hair of the Dog” and “Love Hurts,” the latter of which is a cover of a song originally recorded by the Everly Brothers. The Scottish band’s 1975 album Hair of the Dog was certified platinum for 1 million copies moved in the US alone.
In 2019, McCafferty released Last Testament, his third and final solo album.
Our condolences go out to Dan McCafferty’s family, friends, and bandmates during this difficult time. Revisit his soaring voice in the clips for “Hair of the Dog” and “Love Hurts,” as well as the video for his 2019 single “Tell Me,”

His passing completely slipped through my radar until a few minutes ago when I spotted this video. What a great singer! I remember so well the huge impact of HAIR OF THE DOG in the mid 70's and the album was certainly in my collection. Beyond any doubt we had one thing in common: Rock and Roll. Rest in peace DM.

Hair of the Dog is my favorite! Miss Misery, Changing Times, Please Don't Judas Me, Love Hurts are up there with the greatest groups of all time, Rainbow, Sabbath, Zeppelin, AC/DC etc. Such a distinct voice that made the 70's what they were for all time! RIP!

I was good friend with Manny Charlton 25 July 1941 - 5 July 2022. Here it is 4 months 3 days later Dan The Man passes away. I've talked to Dan a few times and he was a cool guy, RIP Dan. I have had some really cool Dan solos on my channel for some time and are still posted. Also I want to mention. Nicky Moore who played on Manny Charlton's CD "From Behind" whom passed away in August, just one month after Manny. The 1970s and 1980s artists are leaving us.

Sorry ah only knew "Love Hurts"- and maybe that is all ah needed to hear. It was not just hs vocal ability, Dan McCafferty shared like beyond a one person soul. That he was a 'futuristic thinker' ironically works to the benefit of 'what was a foundation' too easily forgotten! They have rarely played that track of this authentic band on radio here. I saw Nazareth in the Houston Music Hall for their Close Enough For Rock & Roll Tour, the album that came out after Hair of The Dog (that had Love Hurts) - that concert was a real mind-blower - they opened with "Telegram" . McCafferty was brilliant and a powerhouse of a singer. RIP.
