I am going to miss Sir Charles. No one else is as good as The Chuckster on Inside the NBA.

Chuck wanted to retire at 60 but surprised us all when he signed a new contract for 10 years! These contract talks is just a convenient time to actually go through with the decision he was thinking of a couple years ago. 25 years is a round number and we were gifted 3 extra years. We appreciate his time and contributions and hope he can enjoy his family going forward.

No more Chuck? This is terrible.

he signed that 10 year thing to give TNT some bargaining power for renewing the NBA rights, but ultimately it didn't matter because the money they could offer was nowhere close to what NBC or Amazon could. I don't think he was planning to stay the whole 10 years, it was more so TNT had more negotiate with, if the money side was close, TNT could argue that they have the best NBA product on TV and the team is committed for the long haul.

It's amazing that most people in the media just can't fathom the idea that Barkley enjoys being free. He doesn't need the money, and he doesn't care about fame or attention. Most people on TV are a slave to the attention and vanity. Barkley doesn't care about any of that. The only reason he stayed on TNT for as long as he did was because he enjoyed the crew.

My opinion? I think it's a semantics thing. He said after next season, no matter what, he's retiring from *television.* He already talked about the possibility of doing Inside The NBA with his own production company if it doesn't come back. I think that's what he does and he stays on but it's NOT on TV. Kinda similar to what you guys did when you were on KZbin for a bit, I think it's something similar.
@kwa0017 ай бұрын
He's gotta be doing a podcast or web show all his own,right? React to the NBA daily/nightly or weekly whatever. He could make so much on his own if he really wanted to go that route. I would support it! Do your own thing,Charles. If he's the most value right now, his leverage is through the roof. Will be fun to see what happens...
@asu56327 ай бұрын
He’s also talked about his grand kids are expensive and he wants to help his daughter with paying their tuition. I don’t know I love Chuck but he’s flip flopped on this a lot. He even said in an interview “people don’t know I own my own production company” and hinted on signing Shaq and Kenny and selling them to Amazon or nbc

Will miss Charles of course but this new NBA era doesn’t really cater to his bluntness. He is too old to be beefing these young guys. We need Charles more than he needs us. Inisde the NBA is often times more entertaining than the actual games. He’ll never go to ESPN and be worked to death like SAS.
@nanagyambibi74267 ай бұрын
Chuck is done, he has been saying for a while that he does not want to do this for much longer. He said he only resigned to help TNT get the NBA back and that he will not fulfill the length of the contract. I also think the loss of all of these Legends in the NBA lately has had an effect on him.

the madden comparison is so true
@dmichael1006 ай бұрын
Only in popularity- which I guess what this is all about. Madden was, frankly, a much better analyst and broadcaster. Barkley is a personality who everything he says is taken with a wink and a grain of salt (including this retirement announcement). Only Barkley "gets away" with what he does. Madden didn't have to "get away" with anything. I'll be honest and I know when I say this, I'll be lambasted. But I guess the CONTENT of basketball analyst is more important to me than most. Barkley has always said crazy things which turned out to be wrong and everybody just laughs. And somehow he is the most popular. I suppose our taste for what we want in a basketball analyst has degenerated into entertainment. I just can't take Charles seriously when he makes some bold prediction like he knows what's going to happen (and most of the time it doesn't) and he does it all the time. It seems no one cares if they can take him seriously. They just like his style. Somehow, that's become the most valuable property in TV broadcasting?

Chuck re-signed with turner the other year on the sole condition that it was to help turner retain the nba rights, if they don’t get the rights why the hell would he keep going? And every other network just kind of stating that they’d just sign the guys and take the show is ridiculous. I think Charles got the shits about networks and the public thinking they could dictate his employment and went screw this I’m out.

Charles has made drastic changes to himself and his actions throughout his playing and broadcasting careers. For all the love he now deservedly receives, he received twice as much hate in his early years with the 76ers when he was still "The Round Mound of Rebound. He found trouble at all of his favorite places - casinos, nightclubs & bars, and the basketball court. He was Draymond before there was Draymond, but being honest in every phase of his life, he wasn't as smarmy and unbalanced as Draymond is about his overly aggressive "Not a Basketball" play. Charles owned his approach to the game 100%, famously refusing to be a "role model". Early in his NBA retirement he even discussed his desire to run for Governor of Alabama - as a Republican! He defended his choice of party quite vigorously, and then of course a few years later, became an avid booster of the Democratic Party. So.....he certainly has a built in capacity for making profound changes in his life and outlook. He hasn't changed his propensity and talent for making dramatic cocksure declarations about his life and future. His retirement announcement aside, nothing that happens with him moving forward should be a surprise.

There's some truth to what you say. Everything Charles said has to be taken with several grains of salt. It just seems everybody knows this but doesn't care because he's an interesting. lovable guy. I frankly am not not as crazy about his analyst work as it seems most are. I actually want good, insightful observations about the game; with Charles you get wild, often simplistic pronouncements and predictions (which as often as not turn out to be inaccurate) but it seems everybody loves him and doesn't care how accurate or insightful he is.
