This video is Dan Peek's Final Live Performance, February 11, 2011, 5 Months Before His Death. Dan had not performed live for several years before this performance. He offered to do this show for a good friend of his who had just opened a coffee shop in Farmington, MO. I knew Dan and his parents and had the privilege of working with them on a couple of real estate transactions. I was the emcee for Dan's concert this night. Another friend of mine shot the video footage and gave it to me after the concert.
I have held on to these videos for some time without publishing them. Now that ample time has passed, I know there are many Dan Peek and America fans out there who would love to watch and listen to one of the original America band members perform his last concert. We miss you Dan!

I had an email conversation with Dan , just a week before his sudden passing. Thanking him for his music over the decades. He replied with such enthusiasm. Even from all the way Downunder here , Dan wrote touching songs that have encouraged me over the years. Gone but so not forgotten.

Interesting he performed Dewey's Ventura Highway. I think he missed his band mates. Sister Golden Hair was written by Beckley. Horse With No Name is another Bunnel song. All The Lonely People is his song. I have to wonder if Dan knew his time was nigh and this is his testament to his former band mates?

I LOVE Dan Peek. If you love his great 70's sound, you need to find his Christian recordings too... they're not quite as cool as the America years, but you get to hear the great sound of Dan's voice and artistic skills. I love all of his music, and today I was listening to All Things Are Possible... check it out on youtube.

What a testimony that lives through Dan today. It wasn’t a band, it wasn’t all the shiny objects nor was it fame. It was only Jesus calling Dan and it was only Dan that could have answered that calling through the Trinity that speaks to the soul.(not even in a desert with a horse with no name) could have pulled Dan away from the Lord. I look forward to seeing my fellow brethren and my family in the walking behind His magnificent robe. All earthly Kings shall lay down their crowns at His feet. After all, when Jesus reveals His will as He did to Dan. There’s nothing in this world that would have stopped Dan from following that calling. Being a believer there is no way one can ignore the night sweats, the lack of appetite and of sleep. I did until His will for me was fully revealed Dan’s testimony lives on each and every day and in the knowing that his testimony is more than blessed and it does so in the remembrance of His name never to be forgotten. In His name.

For some really good reading you can get Dan's book, AN AMERICAN BAND: THE AMERICA STORYwhich he published in 2004, from the website of ThriftBooks, for $8.00 (I believe with free shipping and no other fees). I know it's his story and his side of things but I really don't think he's making anything up. Now you can read about his leaving the band, and why and who didn't want a reunion with him, as well as answers to other questions you may have had all these years. It's definitely a great book and so worth $8.00 (which is about half the price).

Thank you so much, John Mayfield, for sharing this treasure! AMERICA was my favorite band through my teenage years. I was upset when Dan left the group in 1978, but now, all these years later, understand why. He clearly demonstrates here, how he was the most talented of the trio. His guitar skills were truly special and his 'Neil Young' like vocals were essential to the harmony mix that made AMERICA such standout! I have his solo work and followed him right through to his untimely and sad departure from this life. No doubt there is a special place in heaven for this man.

Quite a personal story of Dan's life, praying to find success, finding it more than his wildest imagination, his return to the Lord, losing everything, but finding tru happiness in service to God. We can learn an important lesson from his story. So happy he found his joy in God and what is truly important prior to his death. God bless him and the legacy of the great music he gave us.

@americanlocation2011 1 second ago Ay Dios Mio, just came across this, such a delight and heart-warming to see Dan Peek in his, alas, final performance. Dewey and Gerry have continued the music of America all these years, God bless 'em, but its never been the same without Dan. Besides his contributions to all of America's music, his song writing on the first 2 albums are some of my all-time favorite songs and still today make me wander nostalgic; "California Revisited", "Rainy Day", "Don't Cross The River", are beautiful ballads. "Never Found The Time" had a dream-like quality that was mesmerizing. I got pretty tanked up and went to see Gerry and Dewey play an outdoor concert in Richmond VA back in the 90's, my wife had to get me to settle down a bit as I shouted several times between songs, "Where's Dan! Where's Dan!" Not proud of the drunken outburst but as they say, the alcohol went in and the truth sure came out. Thank you Dan for enriching our lives, un abraso fuerte amigo.

Why do I feel so sad when I saw Dan in this video? I know he’s happy during that time as a Christian, but I think he was also longing for his friends/bandmates, Dewey & Gerry. It’s just so unfortunate that he left this earth without the chance to play with them again even for the last time... 😢 Dan’s distinctive voice is a gift from God. Lonely People & Don’t Cross The River are two of my favourites. Thank you for your music, Dan. May you Rest In Peace with the Lord. 🙏🏻

In the AMERICA biography I read that it would have nearly been impossible for the guys to get back together. The guys had to do a lot of re-arranging their voices and guitar parts after Dan left. The breakup was Dan complaining about the time it took to get to rehearsal after he moved back to L.A. And one morning he simply didn't show up..........and that was it, OVER. SAD. but perfect timing for him. The last two albums had only one minor hit, his. It was time for a change

I always liked America’s radio hits growing up in the 70’s. I lost track of them (or specifically, Dan) until the late 80’s when a friend’s daughter handed me a cassette tape (Dan Peek’s Electrovoice album) she had found in a bargain bin in Nashville. As soon as I heard the redone version of Lonely People, I was hooked. I eventually wrote to Dan while he was living in the Cayman Islands, never expecting (yet hoping) to hear from him. I thanked him for how his music with America & solo work had impacted me & that I was a big fan. Some time later, I received a handwritten letter from the Islands. I will probably never know if it was actually he who wrote the letter but I would like to believe it was personal enough that it was genuine. He thanked me for my encouraging words (it was dated as 12/25 !) & gave me his testimony about coming back to Christ after years of being a prodigal in the music industry). He said he had given up putting out “Christian” music because it was very difficult getting acceptance from either non-Christians or church people & he didn’t perform live anymore. That apparently changed years after I received his letter. I’m so glad he didn’t completely throw in the towel those years earlier. Perhaps a few of us helped get him through that tough time so you could watch this video.

I really get the feeling Dan did this not only for himself but for Dewey and Gerry too like he knew he may never see them again. He really is spot on their songs for probably not really rehearsing them. I think he just had to let them out to honor his former band mates. Unfortunately I also get the scenario that they just did not care. Sad.

Got to be a bit of a Groupie when my boyfriend whom played harmonica was invited to a practice for a local 1970 St Joseph HS Gym Dance in Farmington, MO where Dan lived. They then went to Ironton and played there for the Catholic School and we followed down there as well. Jerry, a harmonic player from Potosi, MO, well known in the music community then, joined in with them and we and a few just hung out for awhile with a smile, miles high. Those were the days my friends. Dan's Dad was 1 of my bosses at Farmington Mental Hospital in Farmington, we were Capricorn Buddies.

A local band The Late Poets opened up for them, John Danley, from Esther, MO (sp), Tony and his brother from Desloge, MO (can't recall their last name) and ?...they may've pulled Mark Hedrich, Robbie Haverstick or Vince West from Bismarck, a sad group that was in Colorado about to be signed with a record deal and 2 of their members got homesick for Bismark. Vince West (different, but guitar player) was called from the group Mississippi to open with them at the Kiel Auditorium in STL, when their lead guitarist got sick. Bismarcks Vince was a real Indian from Bismarck...Just relating in case other locals recall and want to back track down memory lane.

Dan,wrote and performed a ton of great uplifting music. So glad he returned to his, roots, and beliefs. It really says something about a man's true character when,he gives up all he has, acquired, to,sacrifice the riches of this, world to,serve God,and, his true, self. By,doing,so,he,serves, his, fellow man. Dan's music was beautiful and brought joy to,those who listened to and loved his songs. Not only his own but adding his voice to the other members of AMERICA, all of whom wrote great uplifting music and continue to do so. There is so much, angry music out there, it's great to have those who, wrote about love and the good experiences in life. I am not sure what the cause of death was, but he certainly suffered through a lot of adversity, some by his own, choices, as we all do, and some simply by the, choice,we made to,follow God's plan of,creation. Life is great here, but it's great to know that our, suffering is truly over when,we,enter into, the realm,God prepared for our return. RIP, Dan Peek. You are truly loved and missed.

His other solo alblums Bodden Town and Driftin in the Lost Islands are absolute masterpieces, really. They rivel Americas first alblum. When you listen to these alblums you realize Dan Peek was the heart and soul of the band America.
