Dan Snyder is not a fan of pressure. The "I will never change the Redskins name." guy did exactly that when pressure was applied. The "I will never sell the Washington Redskins" guy is now exploring a sale when pressure was applied. A four-to-five-BILLION-dollar profit doesn't hurt that decision.

He also doesn’t have the money to truly stick to his guns. He bought the team almost entirely via debt. He sold the minority shares to pay down the debt. When he got the shares back he had to get a huge debt waiver to do so. His personality says he’d love to call the bluff and refuse to sell and go after the owners. But realistically he doesn’t have the resources in liquid funds to be able to do that. Hence why the pressure works on him. If he had $10B in liquid assets outside of the team he probably would’ve kept the name and fought the sponsors. But the reality is the team is leveraged to the hilt and he probably couldn’t have afforded the costs of lengthy litigation mixed with sponsor money not flowing in to the team. And he probably needs to sell part of the team again to pay down debt but at this stage it would be a big surprise if somebody came in and paid the giant sum for a minority share with all the baggage that comes with Snyder being attached to the team. If you’re gonna spend hundreds of millions to possibly over $1B for a share it goes to figure you’d just buy the whole thing and have him out of the picture. Because with him still there you can’t get a stadium etc.

I think he's hedging against being forced out. There's a number of reasons to do this. If the owners vote him out he stands to lose a lot of money just because of the fact that he could get strong armed by buyer/buyer groups because he has no choice at that point. Probably some tax based reasons/incentives to get the team 'appraised' before he gets forced out the door

As a Washington fan, I would LOVE for him to sell the team. I would dance naked in the streets! But he isn't going to do that. They will have to rip the team from him which I wish they would. The team has been on a downward spiral since he bought the team. Washington use to be a premier franchise (been to 5 Super Bowls and won 3), but not since he bought it.

Last thing Snyder needs is bad PR, and him doing this and then not selling is the worst thing he could do. He has woken the beast for good with this announcement. I think the owners told him they have the votes to force him out and that if he makes them force him out they will sell the team at a substantial discount but if he sells it himself the NFL will allow him to maximize the profits from selling it.

You think that's how it works? Snyder is the most litigious of all the owners and knows the courts and tort law well. Snyder via court would destroy the NFL and multiple owners reputations vid discovery. Snyder will sell because its becoming too much of headache TBH but he will walk away with 5 billion + in his pocket.

I think this is almost certainly trying to get a favourable valuation so that if the Owners try to force a sale he can claim the difference between the valuation and the actual sale price in a lawsuit against the NFL.

That’s not at all how this works…litigation sucks and he would never see that money anyways. Valuation of a franchise like this is volatile. If he sees a tangible threat of being forced out like you say, selling on his own is the way to go, which is what is happening. Not getting a “valuation”. That’s how he gets the better sale.

If a sale happens, they've already gotten a new name and new culture built around it. The product on the field can be criticized in his third season, but Ron Rivera has righted the culture ship inside that football room and you've had numerous former Washington players recently talk about how it was impossible to not let Snyder's drama affect the football during past regimes. With Snyder out of the picture for a year and Rivera handling all football stuff, the culture is in a good place. Some might say, the culture is actually damn good.

I don't know if you can fully blame Snyder for the concrete toilit that is FedEx Field. The Cooke family rushed built that stadium, so it would be finished before Jack Kent Cooke died. They do need a new stadium though. There isn't anymore room at national harbor. So, if they could build on the Virginia side of things, I think it would be wise. It might alienate those last few fans that are on the Maryland side of things, but Virginia fans have taken that extra drive for decades. They'll live. It would also put more space between them and Baltimore. Here in Maryland, that line between where Ravens fans start and Commanders fans end is getting pushed closer and closer to DC every year.
